In their conversation Christo tells us about his National Guitar Collection and his involvement with the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association (HSGA) and his love of vintage music. Christo talks about the events HSGA holds including this year’s event which will be in Santa Cruz, CA on October 22nd through the 25th and he describes the membership which is world wide. Christo takes us through what’s available on their website, lessons, tutorials and eventually instruments for sale. Christo talks about his work performing Hawaiian songs from the 20’s and 30’s and he gives us a history lesson of the early players and their instruments he also takes us through his career as a luthier. Christo gives us his thoughts on the resurgence of the popularity of Hawaiian Steel Guitar, which had help from Sponge Bob Square Pants. Christo takes us through the common tunings for Hawaiian Steel and his preferred tuning A11.     266 - Ryan Bingham In episode 266 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham. In their conversation Ryan takes us through his musical history after his mother bought him a guitar at 16 and a friend of his father’s taught him malagueña from there he began improvising songs in the back of the truck when competing as a bull rider. Ryan takes us through playing bars in Texas and New Mexico and his rise in popularity playing rodeo events. Ryan discusses moving to Paris to perform in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show riding horses for two years and moving back and putting a band together and focusing on music playing anywhere they could. Ryan describes how a chance meeting with Marc Ford (from the Black Crowes) led to a recording deal and started his career. Ryan tells us about his current band, “the Texas Gentleman” and his current album “They Call Us the Lucky Ones”. Ryan talks about his touring schedule playing rodeo events and touring during the spring and fall when his kids are in school. Ryan takes us through his guitars most on loan from a friend including vintage acoustics and electrics from Gibson and Martin and his Waterloo acoustics through a Fender Princeton. Ryan discusses sharing the stage with a lot of his heroes and his friendship with Keith Gattis and his brother Mark. Finally Ryan tells us about how he got his music placed in tv shows and movies and how that led to his acting career.     265 - Mark Lettieri and Purbayan Chatterjee In episode 265 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist Mark Lettieri and sitarist and Grammy winner Purbayan Chatterjee. In their conversation the two tell us where they are now, Mark in Fort Worth, TX and Purbayan in Bombay (Mumbai), India and they discuss how they met at Mark’s Snarky Puppy (one of his regular gigs) concert in Mumbai. Purbayan discusses how this project “Feathered Creatures” turned from a solo album with a few guitar parts to a full out collaboration between the two and they take us through the instrumentation on the album apart from Mark’s guitar and Purbayan’s sitar work. The two take us through the gear they used on the album, Purbayan’s sitar and his electric sitar and Mark’s PRS guitars and Purbayan explains the tuning of the sitar. The two talk about upcoming shows both in the l US and India and tour plans for 2027 and they also tell us about their individual tour schedules for the rest of the year. Mark describes how he ended up in Fort Worth and Purbayan tells us about his family lineage of sitar players. In our conversation Jim discusses his current tour schedule with George Kahumoku and with Weird Al later in the summer. Jim takes us through his musical history growing up in Canada and moving to Florida at a young age playing in bands and eventually moving to LA and quickly becoming a member of Weird Al’s band. Jim tells us how he came to embrace slack key guitar after a post tour trip to Maui and how playing and writing slack key songs for fun started a second career. Jim talks about meeting Frank Zappa and Glen Frey while playing guitar in a cover band in Tampa. Jim takes us through his gear early on Telecasters, Les Paul’s and Fender Bassmans and Marshalls and his gear now Tom Anderson Strat types and Fractal AX FX 3 and the FM 9 and Taylor guitars for his slack key gigs he also takes us through his pickup system for his Taylor’s and the banjo tuners he uses. Jim discusses working with Rick Derringer who produced Weird Al’s early albums and eventually became a mentor to Jim. Their conversation starts with Ryan who’s in a hotel room in New Jersey that’s having air conditioning troubles, and the two give us a history of the band starting with Greg and two other members and how it eventually became the lineup that it is now with Ryan on vocals and guitar and Derek O’Brien from Social Distortion on drums. Greg and Ryan tell us about the bands new album “the Bridges That We Burn” that came out April 3rd and how they went about writing it and talk about the production. Greg gives us their upcoming tour dates in the Midwest and on the West Coast in June. Greg discusses Husker Du and the lack of potential future work with that band and Ryan describes what Soul Asylum is currently up too. The two take us through their gear with UltraBomb Reverend guitars and basses and Ryan tells us a little bit about his relationship with Gibson for Soul Asylum and he talks acoustic guitars.
