    Living as Yourself

Season 5 Finale | With BJ Slager What if the person you've spent your life becoming isn't necessarily who you are? We've spent this season exploring the patterns we develop, the roles we assume, the expectations we inherit, and the ways our nervous systems influence how we experience ourselves and the world. But understanding who you are and actually living as that person are two very different things. In this Season 5 finale, Brandi Taylor welcomes BJ Slager back for a conversation about identity, sense of self, autonomy, and the freedom to grow beyond who we've learned to be. Together, they explore an important distinction: Your identity is not necessarily your sense of self. Identity can be shaped by roles, relationships, achievements, and the labels we adopt. Our sense of self asks something deeper: Who am I beneath those definitions? And when we've spent years finding safety, belonging, or approval through a particular identity, stepping outside it can feel profoundly unfamiliar - even unsafe. That's where the nervous system enters the conversation. Even when we consciously want change, familiar patterns can pull us toward old behaviours, because they're what we've practised and learned to expect. In this episode, we explore: The difference between identity and sense of selfWhy identifying with something can offer more freedom than identifying as itHow conditioning and nervous system familiarity influence our choicesWhy letting go of an old identity doesn't mean rejecting who we used to beWhat happens to relationships when we begin living differentlyHow to love someone without abandoning yourselfWhy authentic leadership requires autonomy rather than a need to be right, needed, or admiredHow ambition changes when achievement is no longer about proving our worthWhy choice, awareness, and participation are essential to living as ourselves One of the most meaningful realizations in this conversation is that transformation doesn't require us to burn down everything we've been. We can honour the identities that helped us navigate life while recognizing that we no longer need to live inside them. And perhaps we don't need to make ourselves, our past, or anyone else wrong in order to choose something different. The question we're leaving you with: Are you living as the person you've learned to be, or the person you actually choose to be? As we close Season 5, thank you for being part of this exploration of power, visibility, standards, boundaries, capacity, relationships, and identity. The journey doesn't end with discovering who we are. It continues in how we choose to live. Epi 79 ~ When you Change

What happens when you change… and the relationships around you don’t? We talk a lot about healing, growth, finding our power, changing our patterns and remembering who we are. But we don't talk nearly enough about what happens when we actually do. Because transformation doesn't happen in isolation. We change inside relationships—and when our identity changes, the way we participate in those relationships changes too. And sometimes we realize something we can no longer unsee: In this episode of Fear It Goes, Brandi explores different parts of identity work: recognizing that a relationship can contain love, history and goodness and still no longer fit the person you're becoming. How our nervous systems become familiar with relational patterns. We learn the rules, the roles and the choreography. This isn't about becoming more evolved than someone else or deciding they're wrong because they've chosen differently. Transformation doesn't give you authority over someone else's evolution. It gives you responsibility for your own participation. That's where standards, boundaries, capacity and identity finally come together. You'll explore: Why familiar relationship patterns can feel safe to the nervous system, even when they no longer fitWhat happens to a relationship when one person's identity begins to changeThe difference between compassion and self-abandonmentWhy understanding someone's patterns doesn't obligate you to live inside themHow growth can become hierarchy if we're not carefulWhy you don't need someone else to be wrong in order to choose differentlyThe difference between discomfort that expands you and discomfort that requires you to abandon yourself Episode 79 brings the identity journey of Season 5 almost full circle and sets up the season finale with BJ Slager: What does it actually mean to live as yourself? Reflection Ask yourself: If I met this relationship today, as the person I am now, would I choose it? Epi 78 ~ Capacity

What can you hold now? What if your capacity isn't measured by how much you can carry? High performers are often praised for handling pressure, solving problems, pushing through exhaustion, leading through crisis, and keeping going long after everyone else has stopped. We call that strength. But survival builds capacity too. Survival and protection teach you to tolerate enormous stress, anticipate problems, manage people, stay useful, and become incredibly capable at carrying what hurts you. Then one day, something changes. You begin recognizing the patterns. Raising your standards. Holding boundaries. Becoming more visible. Reclaiming your power. Remembering who you are. And suddenly, the question isn't how much more you can endure. It's: How much life can you hold without abandoning yourself? In this episode, Brandi explores a different definition of capacity— not measured by productivity or how much you can accomplish, but by how much peace, love, support, power, possibility, and life you can actually experience while remaining yourself. Because sometimes the nervous system has enormous capacity for chaos and very little capacity for peace. And sometimes the discomfort that appears during transformation isn't telling you something is wrong. It's simply saying: I've never been this version of myself here before. Brandi also explores why traditional leadership development can fall short when strategy changes but the nervous system doesn't. Knowledge isn't always the limitation. The nervous system applying that knowledge may not yet have the capacity to live it. This episode asks you to stop measuring transformation only by what's left to fix and begin noticing the evidence of what has already changed. What can you hold now that you couldn't before? What no longer owns you? What are you finally able to put down? Because transformation doesn't only change what you can hold. Eventually, it changes what fits. And that's where we're going next. Reflection Ask yoursef: What can I hold now that I couldn't hold before? Rest without guilt... Your power... Peace... Notice the evidence. Remember - Something that used to own you may simply not own you anymore. Epi 77 ~ There I Am

Remembering who you are What if some of the things you've spent your entire life calling your personality... were actually strategies? The independence. The need to achieve. The way you take care of everyone. We tend to think of these things as identity. That's just who I am. But what if some of them aren't simply who you are but they are actually who you learned to become? In this episode of Fear It Goes, Brandi Taylor explores one of the most confronting questions of Season Five: Who are you when survival is no longer deciding who you need to be? Because identity doesn't develop in isolation. We learn who to be through experience, relationships, belonging, what gets rewarded, what gets rejected—and what our nervous system learns creates safety. Maybe being useful meant love. Being exceptional got you praise and acceptance. Becoming incredibly successful meant never feeling powerless. Those strategies weren't failures. They worked. The problem begins when “this helped me” becomes “this is who I am.” And that's why transformation can feel so uncomfortable even when you know exactly what you want to change. You're not simply changing a behaviour. You may be challenging an identity your nervous system has associated with safety for decades. In this episode, you'll discover:How survival strategies can quietly become personality and identityWhy knowing better doesn't automatically create different behaviourWhy nervous-system familiarity can pull you back toward an identity you've consciously outgrownThe unexpected grief that can accompany becoming more of yourselfWhy returning to an old pattern doesn't mean your transformation has failedHow new choices create the evidence your nervous system needs for lasting changeWhy standards, boundaries, visibility and power are ultimately questions of identityHow to begin recognizing the small moments that say, “There I am.” Transformation isn't always a dramatic breakthrough. Sometimes it's realizing you didn't shrink when you were seen. You remained connected to yourself. And nothing terrible happened. There you are. Maybe transformation isn't about becoming someone new. Maybe it's about creating enough internal safety that you don't have to ask who you should be. You feel enough safety to tell the truth, have needs, hold your standards, receive, and belong to yourself. You stop performing the person you're trying to become... and recognize the person who's already there. There I am. Epi 76 ~ When Your Boundaries Change Your Relationships

When Your Boundaries Change Your RelationshipsWhy knowing your limits is easy. Holding them when belonging is at stake is something else. Most of us think boundaries are about telling other people what they can and cannot do. Don't speak to me that way. Don't cross this line. Don't treat me like that. But a healthy boundary doesn't remove another person's choice. It clarifies yours. What happens when the standards you hold for your life meet another person's autonomy, choices, values, and nervous system? And what happens when their answer isn't the one you hoped for? In this episode of Fear It Goes, Brandi sits down with returning guest BJ Slager to explore what boundaries actually are—and why setting them is often far easier than living with what they reveal. Together, they unpack the difference between standards, boundaries, ultimatums, control, compromise, and avoidance—and why healthy relationships require boundaries even when two people deeply care about one another. Because knowing where your boundary belongs is cognitive. Holding it when it threatens belonging is nervous-system work. In this episode, you'll discover:Why your standards have to become clear before your boundaries canThe difference between a boundary and an attempt to control someone else's behaviourWhy another person doesn't have to agree with your boundary in order to honour itHow people-pleasing can turn unspoken boundaries into resentmentWhy “protecting my peace” can sometimes become avoidanceThe role communication plays in healthy boundaries and relationship repairWhen repeated boundary violations stop being a communication problem and start becoming informationWhy compromise can be healthy—and when constant compromise may reveal incompatibilityHow two good people can have standards that simply don't fitWhy changing your standards can change your relationships, identity, and sense of belongingThe grief and vulnerability that can accompany becoming someone who no longer abandons themselves to stay connected Brandi and BJ also discuss The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, including its powerful idea of separating what belongs to you from what belongs to someone else. Because eventually, boundaries stop merely protecting your life. They begin revealing who you've become. And perhaps the deepest question isn't whether other people will respect the boundaries you set. It's whether you're willing to respect yourself enough to hold them when they don't. Epi 75 ~ Standards You Live By

You demand excellence from yourself... And yet still accept far less than you would ever tell someone you love to accept. That's the uncomfortable contradiction of standards. High performers often have extraordinary standards for achievement, discipline, responsibility, and performance. But what about your standards for how you live? How you treat yourself. The quality of your relationships. The way conflict is resolved. The amount of yourself you're willing to sacrifice to keep someone else comfortable. Your standards aren't what you say you deserve. They're revealed by what you've allowed to become normal. And normal isn't necessarily healthy. In this episode, Brandi explores the hidden standards governing our lives—and why knowing what you deserve is often not enough to change what you're willing to accept. Through the lens of the nervous system, she examines how familiar patterns become our unconscious definition of normal, even when they're costing us our peace, well-being, relationships, or authentic self. Holding a new standard isn't difficult; it requires discipline. What becomes tricky is that it threatens something your nervous system has learned to protect. Your Belonging. Your Approval. Feeling Safe. Predictability. A job. A relationship. Or even the identity you've spent years becoming. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why high performers can demand excellence from themselves while accepting far less elsewhere • How familiar can become confused with safe—and normal with healthy • The subtle difference between kindness and people-pleasing • Why your standards become clearest when holding them could cost you something • How survival patterns quietly influence what you tolerate • Why standards aren't demands placed on others, but agreements about how you choose to participate in your own life • How standards become the foundation for healthy boundaries • Why changing your standards can bring grief as your identity, relationships, and old normal begin to shift Sometimes growth doesn't mean anyone became wrong. But it can mean what once worked simply isn't compatible with who you're becoming. One of the greatest standards you can ever create is: I will no longer abandon myself to maintain belonging. What am I ready to make healthy now? Your life will rarely rise above the standards you're willing to hold for yourself. Not the ones you say you have. The ones you're willing to live. Especially when living them costs you something. Because eventually, the standard you refuse to negotiate becomes the life you refuse to abandon. Epi 74 ~ Power

PowerWhy owning who you are isn't arrogance.Have you ever met someone who walks into a room and you feel their presence before they ever say a word? They don't need to announce themselves. They don't need to be the loudest. They don't need everyone to agree with them. They don't need to prove how successful, intelligent, or powerful they are. They simply know who they are. We often confuse power with dominance, status, control, or arrogance. But real power isn't about being superior to anyone else. Power is the ability to remain authentically yourself regardless of the audience. Because leadership isn't limited by knowledge. It's limited by the state of the nervous system applying that knowledge. Authentic power doesn't say, Nobody gets to affect me. It says: Nobody else gets to define me. You can listen without surrendering yourself. You can be challenged without collapsing. You can be different without apologizing. You can take up space without taking space away from someone else. And you can allow another person to stand fully in their power without believing theirs threatens yours. Maybe power was never something you needed to acquire. Maybe it's what remains when you finally stop abandoning yourself. In this episode, you'll discover:Why real power has nothing to do with dominance, control, or superiorityThe difference between authentic power and arroganceWhy people-pleasing can be a nervous system strategy for maintaining belongingHow shrinking, apologizing, and seeking approval quietly give your power awayWhy standing fully in who you are can actually feel unsafeHow our ancient need for belonging still influences the way we lead, speak, and show up todayWhy authority and internal power are not the same thingHow self-trust allows you to hear feedback without abandoning yourselfWhy someone else's power never requires the diminishment of your ownWhat changes when you stop asking the room for permission to be yourself Because owning your power isn't about becoming bigger than anyone else. It's finally refusing to become smaller than who you are. Learn more about Brandi's coaching, speaking, workshops, and programs at fearitgoes.com. Epi 73 ~ Being Seen

Being SeenWhy visibility isn't about confidenceHave you ever wondered why you pull back just as you're getting closer to what you want? The bigger opportunity. The difficult conversation. The next level of leadership. The deeper relationship. The success you know you're capable of... but you just stop yourself. Most of us believe hesitation means we need something more. More preparation, credentials, just something more. Very few of us consider that our nervous system may not be afraid of being seen at all—it may be afraid of what being seen has historically meant. Judgment, expectations, disappointment, or rejection. Or even being loved, celebrated and successful in ways we've never learned to receive. In this episode, Brandi explores why visibility is more complex than just putting yourself out there—and why some of the most successful and visible people can still be hiding in plain sight. Because you can build an extraordinary life and still carefully craft a safe version for each room. Through insights into nervous system regulation, identity and leadership, Brandi explores how competence, perfectionism, preparation and achievement can become sophisticated ways of controlling what other people are allowed to see. Eventually, the identity that once helped you belong becomes the very identity limiting your expansion. Your nervous system needs capacity not only for failure but for success, recognition, money, love, influence and deeper intimacy. So the greatest expression of visibility isn't getting everyone to look at you. It's being able to remain yourself when they do. In This EpisodeYou'll explore: Why visibility can feel unsafe even when you consciously want itHow high performers hide through competence, preparation and achievementThe identities we create in order to belongWhy being admired and being known are differentWhy success, recognition and love require nervous system capacityThe relationship between visibility and boundariesWhy being misunderstood doesn't require abandoning yourselfHow to become more visible without giving everyone access to youFinal Thought Where in your life are you already visible... but still not allowing yourself to be fully seen? Who would you no longer need to be if being seen finally felt safe?
