Don't Be A Fatty Over Fifty - Boris Johnson’s words apparently - after attributing his weight to his life threatening experience of coronavirus.
Although they may seem harsh - the truth is, a shocking 1 in 3 people in the UK are obese - and being obese doubles your chance of needing hospital treatment for coronavirus. It also means you're 10 times more likely to die of it.
Of course the virus is deadly - but it's time to wake up and stop burying our heads in the sand. Approximately 34,000 people die due to obesity related illnesses per year and it costs the NHS £5-6 billion.
This is a huge, societal problem and coronavirus has rightly shone an even brighter light on it. Worrying about whether it's politically correct to discuss obesity, for fear of being labelled 'fat shaming' won't solve the issue.
Education, knowledge and emotional support it's what's needed to truly help overweight and obese people live the healthy, happy life they deserve. Prevention is always better than cure.
