How to Make Beautiful Artworks: A Surprising Lesson From a Children’s Book

Do you end up having piles of crumpled paper when you draw? Do you judge your work too harshly?  What we don’t know is that what seems ugly and imperfect to us is a masterpiece to others. And that’s what the book Ish by Peter H. Reynolds wants to convey.  If what you’re making is far from what you’ve imagined it to be, let it go. Don’t be too hard on yourself because someone out there will see the beauty in your artwork that you don’t normally see. When you let go, have fun, and make something ugly, sometimes you end up making a beautiful mess.  Remember, perfection isn’t the definition of beauty. So feel free to share your artwork, and let others see that beautiful mess you’ve created. (Drop your links in the comments, I’d love to see them!) Key Takeaways: Introduction (00:00) Artist tip: a cool way to display paints (00:38) What’s an ish? (03:02) The book Ish by Peter H. Reynolds (03:45) Let your artwork be loose and free (09:17) Final thoughts (13:13)   Additional Resources: - Learn more on how to make money as an artist here - Grab a copy of my book on Amazon here - Visit my website here  - Book a free 15-minute diagnostic call here - Join The Artist Appeals Facebook group here -- The Artist APPEALS is a podcast dedicated to artists who want to learn how to make money with their art WITHOUT having to compromise.  Be sure to follow the podcast on your favorite platform so you never miss an episode!

50 Years’ Worth of Lessons From Textile Artist and Art Gallery Owner Susan Hensel

Art is all about communication. But are your artworks conveying your message as an artist?  Our guest for this week started as a sculptor for 15 years but realized that it wasn’t the right medium for her message. Joining me on the podcast today is Susan Hensel, a multidisciplinary artist with over fifty years of experience. She combines mixed media with digital machine embroidery to form beautiful textile art with eye-catching colors and patterns. In this episode, Susan talks about her process as a textile artist, product presentation tips, automation and marketing, running a fine art gallery, and a whole lot more.
