Rewind: GiangSinh Pham - Vietnamese millennial raised and absorbed in Western & Vietnamese culture | S2 Ep 5

GiangSinh is named due to her birth date of December 24th, being Vietnamese for Christmas, which she still went by until recently. Her Vietnamese mother and father met in Indonesia where GiangSinh was born and lived there for the first 5 years of her life. After moving back to Saigon she has lived in Nha Trang, Singapore, LA and now back to Saigon again where she feels her heart belongs.  She has worked in Hospitality and FMCG most of her adult life, starting out at the prestigious Six Senses resort. Currently, she is Head of Sales for Bira91; a beer imagined in India, brewed in Belgium, sold worldwide and currently making inroads into the crowded Vietnamese market. We talk about her parents tumultuous relationship, owing to their different backgrounds and family pressures, and how that affected her growing up; living in different places around the world and the experiences gleaned from that and of course... alcohol. From the mass consumption of beer in Vietnam to the plethora of new cocktail bars opening in Saigon and our favourite types of whisky.  She also believes that dogs are better than humans! Biscuit agrees. Bira 91 "Send me a message!" TRIGGER WARNING: The subject of this episode is the reporting of sexual abuse in Vietnam. While there is nothing graphic in this episode, if you feel that this would be a trigger or discomforting please feel free to skip this episode. Sen is a journalist based in Saigon, Vietnam where she covers development, culture, and human rights. She writes for the English publication VnExpress International. We talk about many of the articles that you can read below, and the reasons why sexual abuse of children happens in Vietnam and how it is dealt with - especially in relation to the way that older people are automatically believed and respected. We also discuss what is changing to help protect children and prevent this happening. Despite the heavy nature of the subject, we still find some light-hearted moments and it was great to see that Sen hasn't been worn down by the nature of her reporting and stays upbeat. Rewind: Discover How Vũ Minh Tú Became Vietnam's Raunchiest Comedian | S2 Ep 1

The first episode of Season 2 is with Saigon Funny People co-founder and resident cat lady, Vu Minh Tu! Hanoi-born, Saigon-based Tu is a comedy force to be reckoned with. An established performer on the Vietnam circuit, her style can be described as like any stereotypical Asian female: passive aggressive. Tu's hilarious jokes at shows across the region have seen her collect numerous awards including first place in the Roosters Beer Comedy Competition in Saigon, as well as the usual free beers and rounds of applause. Her family doesn't think she is funny, which is why they are never invited to shows. We talk about the differences between Hanoi and Saigon, what it's like to be a risqué, Vietnamese and female comedian, doing comedy in a second language, and Tu's ongoing journey with depression. Below are recommended links from Tu if you need support with your mental health. Links Saigon Support Group The Beautiful Mind Group ------------------- Theme music composed by Lewis Wright. Rewind: Việt Kiều Texan, Splicing Mexican and Vietnamese Foods, Lê Minh Tâm

Tâm is the first listener-suggested guest, thanks to regular listener, Brandon Coleman. Tâm is an entertaining and interesting guest that has an in-depth story and many insights to share about life in Saigon, which can be seen by the length of this episode.  Born in Texas to Vietnamese refugees, Tâm moved to Saigon after a stint in Singapore.  Here in Saigon she worked at an international branding agency but soon started creating Vietnamese-Mexican dishes and hosting dinners out of her apartment, creating a closed-door restaurant named Saigonita.  Soon Saigonita appeared in Vice Munchies and was profiled in Saigoneer so she decided to quit her corporate career to pursue her passion in food. Since then, she's been interviewed by publications in Vietnam, Singapore, the US, Italy, France; and has given a TEDx Talk.  She is currently getting to more deeply know her roots and explore Vietnam's culinary scene through travels around the country. ------------------- Theme music composed by Lewis Wright.
