Stronger Pets, Brighter Minds: Exploring Mobility, Light and the Pineal Gland

This episode of Late Night Health explores two very different paths to healthier living—helping beloved pets stay strong and mobile, and reconsidering the role light may play in human well-being.Host Mark Alyn first welcomes Dr. Kelly Fishman, a veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist and founder of Strutt Animal Mobility Specialists in Pennsylvania. Fishman explains that a walk around the block may not provide enough activity for many dogs, particularly working breeds such as Labrador retrievers, border collies and Australian shepherds. Strength and cardiovascular exercises—including canine squats, planks and jumps—can help build muscle, support joints, manage weight and reduce behavior problems caused by excess energy.Fishman also shares practical advice for senior pets and owners with limited mobility. Dog treadmills, elevated exercise surfaces and carefully selected nutritional support can offer useful alternatives. For cats, whose arthritis often goes unnoticed, she emphasizes weight management, muscle support and attentive care. Her warm-weather tips include adding water to canned food and offering frozen blueberries or cucumber for extra hydration. Beyond physical health, Fishman discusses the emotional benefits pets provide, especially for older adults and people living alone. In the second half, Italian physician, ophthalmologist, musician and author Dr. Roberto Pinelli joins the program from Switzerland. His book, Awakening the Pineal Gland, examines the small gland located deep within the brain and its connections to light, melatonin, sleep and circadian rhythms.Blending neuroscience, ancient symbolism and personal intuition, Pinelli describes his research into carefully modulated light and sound. He argues that light should be viewed not simply as a danger, but as a form of biological nourishment when experienced responsibly—particularly during gentler morning and late-afternoon hours. While several of his broader therapeutic ideas remain unconventional, the conversation offers a fascinating look at his effort to connect ophthalmology, nature, consciousness and spirituality. Flu Season Is Coming: What Adults 65+ Need to Know About Vaccination

Flu season can arrive sooner—and spread faster—than many people expect. In this special edition of Late Night Health, host Mark Alyn speaks with Dr. Samantha Picking, Senior Director of Immunizations at Walgreens, about how older adults and other high-risk individuals can prepare for the coming respiratory illness season.Dr. Picking explains why September and October are generally the best months to receive a flu shot, giving the body approximately two weeks to build protection before cases begin to rise. She also addresses one of the most persistent misconceptions about vaccination: the flu shot cannot give you the flu. Mild soreness, aches, or a brief fever may occur after vaccination, but these temporary reactions are different from an influenza infection. The conversation also explores the enhanced flu vaccines recommended for adults 65 and older, how scientists determine which influenza strains to include in each year’s vaccine, and why declining vaccination rates remain a public-health concern. In addition, Dr. Picking discusses other important vaccines—including RSV, COVID-19, pneumococcal disease, and shingles—and explains that multiple vaccines can safely be administered during the same visit.Listeners will also learn how pharmacists can review their health history, medications, and vaccination records to help identify which immunizations may be appropriate. With many vaccines available at little or no cost through Medicare or private insurance, this timely interview offers practical guidance for staying protected throughout flu season—and reminds listeners that their neighborhood pharmacist can be an accessible, trusted source of information and care. The Health Care Question Nobody Wants to Ask- Are We Treating Disease Instead of Preventing It?

In today's business world, we're often told that success comes from being tougher, louder, more aggressive, and willing to outwork or outmaneuver everyone around us. But what if that advice is wrong? On this episode of Late Night Health, Mark Alyn sits down with public relations executive, entrepreneur, and bestselling author Amy Summers to explore a different path to success—one built on mentorship, leadership, and helping others rise. Amy's new book, Lift: 10 Mentorship Touchpoints to Empower Your Team and Accelerate Your Own Career, challenges the old-school belief that success is a zero-sum game. Instead, she argues that leaders who invest in others often discover that their own careers grow faster as a result. Drawing on more than two decades of building teams and mentoring young professionals, Amy shares the lessons she's learned about developing talent, creating healthy workplace cultures, and why kindness and accountability can coexist. She explains why toxic leadership still exists, why so many people stay trapped in unhealthy work environments, and how a new generation of leaders can create something better. The conversation also explores the rapidly changing world of technology, media, and communications. Amy discusses how mentoring can help leaders stay relevant, why picking up the phone is becoming a competitive advantage again, and how meaningful relationships remain the foundation of successful public relations and business growth. Along the way, Mark and Amy share stories from a friendship and professional relationship that spans more than three decades, creating an engaging and often humorous conversation packed with practical insights for professionals at every stage of their careers. Whether you're a business owner, manager, entrepreneur, mentor, mentee, or simply someone looking for a better way to succeed, this episode offers a refreshing reminder: helping others succeed may be one of the smartest career moves you'll ever make. Watch, listen, and discover why lifting others up might be the key to lifting yourself higher. Your Story Is More Than a Business Success—It’s Your Legacy

Successful leaders spend decades building companies, solving problems, creating jobs, and shaping industries. Along the way, they accumulate something even more valuable than financial success: experience, wisdom, and stories that can inspire future generations. The challenge is that many of those stories are never preserved. How did they get started? What obstacles nearly derailed their journey? Which decisions changed the course of their lives and careers? What lessons did they learn through success, failure, risk, and perseverance? These are the stories that family members often wish they had asked about—and future generations wish they could hear firsthand. Every successful entrepreneur, founder, executive, and business leader carries a unique history. Yet those memories frequently remain scattered across conversations, personal notes, and fading recollections. Without deliberate effort, much of that knowledge can be lost. That's the idea behind Captains of Industry: Your Enduring Legacy, a program designed to help accomplished professionals preserve their life stories in a beautifully crafted hardcover book that can be shared with family, friends, colleagues, and future generations. A legacy memoir is more than a collection of memories. It captures: • The risks taken to build a career or business • The challenges overcome along the way • The turning points that shaped success • The leadership lessons learned through decades of experience For families, these books preserve personal history and values. For colleagues and emerging leaders, they provide practical insight gained through real-world experience. For future generations, they offer inspiration, perspective, and a deeper understanding of what it took to build a meaningful life and career. Many people assume writing a memoir requires years of work. The Captains of Industry process is designed to simplify the experience through a series of guided interviews. Professional writers and editors help transform those conversations into a compelling narrative while managing every stage of development, editing, design, and publication. The team behind the project includes several accomplished storytellers. Dr. Kenneth Atchity is a literary manager, film producer, editor, and author who has worked on more than 400 books and helped guide more than 20 authors to New York Times bestseller status. A Yale Ph.D., former professor, Fulbright scholar, and longtime contributor to the Los Angeles Times Book Review, he has spent a lifetime helping people tell meaningful stories. Joining him is Robert Rivenbark, a career professional writer and Amazon bestselling author whose science-fiction novel, The Cloud, earned #1 bestseller status. Rivenbark serves as a lead interviewer and writer for the Captains of Industry memoir program. The interview process is intentionally relaxed and conversational, typically requiring three to five hours that can be scheduled in multiple sessions. Those interviews are transcribed, professionally edited, and transformed into a polished 50- to 100-page memoir, custom bound to the client's preferences. For many leaders, the result is something far more valuable than a business record. It becomes a lasting gift—a way to ensure that the lessons, values, and stories that shaped their lives continue to inspire others long into the future.
