Does Any of This Actually Matter? Overlanding’s Biggest Debates

In this episode, I’m diving into some of the debates and personal preferences that seem to come up over and over again in the overlanding world. Does your truck need to stay clean, or is being covered in dirt part of the experience? Should all your gear have a permanent home on your rig, or is a modular setup better? And are you someone who plans and pre-stages everything ahead of a trip, or are you throwing gear in the truck at the last minute? I’ll share where I land on each of these, but more importantly, talk about why I don’t think there’s necessarily a “right” way to do any of it. And finally, I’m tackling one of my favorite debates: overlanding vs. car camping. Does the label really matter? In my opinion, if you’re getting out, exploring, camping, and having adventures with your vehicle, call it whatever you want. Let me know where you fall on these debates in the comments—I’m curious how differently everyone approaches overlanding! Is the Overlanding Boom Finally Over?

In this episode, I’m asking a question I’ve been thinking about for a while: Is the overlanding boom finally over? Overlanding exploded in popularity over the last several years, but lately it feels like things are changing. Social media is packed with overlanding channels, brands are sending free gear to seemingly everyone, expos have gotten bigger and more commercialized, and sometimes it feels like simply putting the word “overland” on a product automatically makes it more expensive. I share my thoughts on where the hobby is today, whether overland expos still have the same appeal, how influencer marketing and free gear are affecting reviews, and whether we’re paying an unnecessary “overland tax” for the gear we buy. I don’t think overlanding is going away—but I do wonder if we’ve reached the other side of the massive boom. What do you think? Has overlanding peaked, or is the hobby just evolving? 5 Things Every Overlander Regrets Not Buying

Some overlanding gear is nice to have... and some completely changes the way you travel. In this video, I'm sharing the five upgrades I regret not buying sooner after years of overlanding and camping off-grid. From staying connected with a WeBoost, to the confidence of having a winch, to the comfort and convenience of my canopy camper, fridge, and REIGN Outdoor 270 awning, these are the pieces of gear that have made the biggest difference in my adventures. I'll explain why each one earned a permanent place in my setup, how they've improved my trips, and who I think they're worth buying for. If you're building out your own overland rig or trying to decide where to spend your money first, I hope this helps you avoid some of the mistakes I made and invest in the gear you'll appreciate every time you head off the pavement. Why Alibaba Campers Are Selling Like Crazy

In this episode, I'm taking a look at one of the biggest trends I've seen in the overlanding world over the past year: the rapid rise of Alibaba campers. It feels like everywhere you look, more people are importing these campers directly from China—but are sales really exploding, and if so, why? I'll share what I've observed as both an owner and someone who's been closely following the market, including what's driving the demand, how pricing compares to traditional brands, and why more people are willing to take a chance on importing one themselves. We'll also talk about whether this is just a passing trend or if Alibaba campers are permanently changing the truck camper industry. If you've been wondering whether the hype is real, considering buying one yourself, or just want to understand why these campers seem to be everywhere lately, this episode is for you. Want one for yourself? Are We Overpaying for Overlanding?

If you've spent any time shopping for overlanding gear, you've probably noticed something: add the word "overland" to almost any product, and the price seems to jump overnight. In this episode, I'm diving into what I like to call the **Overlanding Tax**—where it shows up, why it exists, and whether it's ever actually worth paying. I'll break down some of the biggest offenders, from rooftop tents and shovels, to vehicles and other things that can quietly drain your budget. More importantly, I'll share where I think spending extra really does get you better quality and where you might be paying more for branding than performance. Whether you're just getting into overlanding or you've been building your rig for years, this episode is all about helping you make smarter buying decisions, avoid unnecessary expenses, and focus your budget on the upgrades that truly improve your adventures. What do you think is the biggest example of the Overlanding Tax? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear where you think the industry gets it right... and where it gets a little carried away. Here are some of the budget priced options I talked about in the episode: Here's a link to the Alibaba page for this camper (use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING147 to get 2 items free, worth up to $170 or mention All Things Overlanding to your rep): https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Truck-Camper-Custom-Hard-Shell-Rooftop_1601727228413.html?spm=a2747.product_manager.0.0.380971d2UHgNse Budget Shovel: https://amzn.to/3Qhh3B3 Setpower Fridge: https://amzn.to/3QSspvs Hest Mattress: https://amzn.to/4faagCy White Duck Sleeping Bag: https://whiteduckoutdoors.sjv.io/c/2836542/1823262/21733?iratid=41039&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwhiteduckoutdoors.com%2Fcollections%2Fsleeping-bag%2Fproducts%2Fsleeping-bag-0-f

Is Overlanding Better Than Traditional Travel?

Have you ever wondered whether overlanding is actually better than taking a traditional vacation? After spending years exploring both, I wanted to sit down and compare the two to see which one really offers the better experience. In this episode, I'm breaking down the pros and cons of overlanding versus traditional travel, including the real costs, flexibility, comfort, adventure, stress, and the kinds of memories each one creates. Whether you're dreaming about building an overland rig or you're perfectly happy booking flights and hotels, I think you'll find there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. I'll share my personal experiences, the things I love about both styles of travel, and why my perspective has changed over the years. If you've ever wondered whether overlanding is worth the investment—or if a traditional vacation might actually be the better choice for you—this episode is for you. The New Xterra Might Be the Best Thing to Happen to Overlanding in Years

The Nissan Xterra has been gone for years, but if the rumors and reports are true, its return could have a bigger impact on the overlanding world than most people realize. In this episode, I'm taking a deep dive into what a new Xterra could mean for overlanders, off-road enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an adventure-ready vehicle that doesn't cost a fortune. I'll talk about why the original Xterra became such a beloved platform, how the overlanding landscape has changed since it disappeared, and what Nissan would need to do to make the new version a serious contender against vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler. We'll also discuss whether there's still room in today's market for a rugged, purpose-built SUV and why I think the return of the Xterra could be exactly what many outdoor enthusiasts have been waiting for. Whether you're a longtime Xterra fan, a Nissan Frontier owner, or just someone who loves talking about overlanding vehicles, this episode should spark some interesting discussion. What do you think? Would you consider a new Xterra for your next adventure rig? After 7 Years of Overlanding, I’m Switching to an Alibaba Camper

For the last 7 years, my overlanding setup has revolved around a bed rack and rooftop tent. It’s taken me on incredible trips, helped me learn what actually matters on the trail, and honestly shaped the way I camp and travel. But lately, I’ve realized my needs have changed… and that’s why I’m making a pretty massive switch. In this video, I talk about why I’m moving away from my traditional RTT setup and diving headfirst into an Alibaba camper build for my Nissan Frontier. From comfort and convenience to weather protection, storage, faster camp setup, and long-term travel goals, I break down the real reasons behind the change — including some of the frustrations that finally pushed me over the edge. I also share what I’m hoping this camper setup will improve, some concerns I still have, and why I think a lot of overlanders eventually reach this same crossroads after years on the road. This isn’t about saying rooftop tents are bad. I still think they make sense for a ton of people. But for where I’m at right now, I think a lightweight camper might be the next evolution of my setup. If you’ve ever debated RTT vs camper, are curious about Alibaba campers, or you’re just interested in the future of this build, this video should give you a pretty honest look at where my head is at.
