Catholics Against Militarism (CAM) is an informal, grassroots, Internet-based movement of lay Catholics that seeks to identify and respectfully challenge militaristic attitudes in the U.S. Catholic Church. We conduct interviews with Catholics and other Catholic groups who are: 1) successfully registering dissent at the parish level, 2) raising awareness of the dangers of militarism through dialogue with fellow believers, and 3) spurring deeper, more honest reflection on the role of violence in our world.

168: Lindsay Clancy, Joan of Arc, and the Voices that Tell Us To Kill (2)

In the first video (Episode 166), Ellen compared Joan of Arc to Lindsay Clancy and asked the question: If Joan of Arc and Lindsay Clancy each heard voices that told her to kill, why was Joan of Arc right to follow them and Lindsay Clancy was wrong? Furthermore, how do you know if you hear a voice that tells you to kill whether it is from God? Many viewers on YouTube fiercely objected to the mere comparison, so in the next episode (167), Fr. McCarthy joined us to answer some of the common (and thoughtful) objections voiced by those who seriously took offense at the comparison. In Part I (Episode 167), we tried to remove mental barriers so that we could get back to the main question: How do you know if you hear a voice that tells you to kill whether it is from God? We address that question here in Part II, and respond to those who ventured answers to the question in the comments of the YouTube video. 167: Lindsay Clancy, Joan of Arc, and the Voices that Tell Us to Kill (1)

This is a follow-up to Episode 166, in which Ellen made a comparison between St. Joan of Arc and Lindsay Clancy. Some folks commented that either they couldn't listen to the episode, because the comparison struck them as too bizarre (or even outright blasphemous), or they asked Ellen to help them connect the dots. Fr. McCarthy joins us to talk through some of the objections that were voiced, in an attempt to overcome those barriers, so that we can move on to part 2, in which we will try to answer the question: If you hear a voice (whether disembodied like Lindsay Clancy and St. Joan of Arc, or embodied), how do you know whether to follow it? How do you know if it's from God? In this, Part I, we will address some of the objections to the comparison.  Thank you for joining us!  0:00 Opening Prayer & Intro OVERCOMING BARRIERS: Part 1 4:38 "But St. Joan of Arc never killed anyone."  --What does it mean to be a killer? 13:20 "But she wasn't told to kill people. She was told to save France." --1983 USCCB peace pastoral: "There is no notion of a warrior God who will lead the people in historical, violent conflict against enemies in the New Testament."  20:54 "Lindsay Clancy was told to kill innocent, defenseless children while Joan was told to kill grown men, armed for battle, who were trying to kill her." 24:48 WHY Joan couldn't question her Voices 32:02 Cautionary words from Fr.
