The College Years #002 Be Someone That Can Be Called On

What happens when your children need more freedom, but they still need their father? In this episode of FATHERS of the FUTURE: The College Years, Luke Kayyem talks about learning to loosen your grip without checking out of your child’s life. Fathering college-aged children requires a different kind of leadership. You cannot control every decision, solve every problem, or force every conversation, but you can remain present, consistent, and available. The goal is not to prevent your children from experiencing difficulty. It is to give them room to grow while reminding them that they never have to walk through life alone. KEYS to VICTORY inside this episode... 🎙️Servant leadership is the disciplined choice. 🎙️ Servant leadership is strength used for someone else’s benefit.  🎙️ You can lead from your scars, but you shouldn’t lead from an open wound.  🎙️ Trauma explains behavior, but it doesn’t have to define your future. At some point, healing requires taking responsibility for what you do with what happened to you. 🎙️ Letting go does not mean disappearing. 🎙️ Your children still need your voice, but they do not need you to control every decision. 🎙️ Ask thoughtful questions before immediately offering answers. 🎙️ Trust what you have built and give your children room to become who they were created to be. The way you father may change as your children grow, but your presence, love, and influence still matter. Season V Experience #119 Discipline Before Spotlights with Kyle Pottinger

In this episode of the FATHERS of the FUTURE Podcast, Luke Kayyem sits down with Kyle Pottinger, Senior Vice President at On Location and a leader in the world of professional sports and entertainment. From growing up on a dairy farm to helping lead experiences on some of the biggest stages in sports, Kyle’s story is a reminder that where you start does not determine where you finish. What matters is what you do with what’s in front of you. KEYS to VICTORY inside this episode... 🎙️ Never stop asking questions. Curiosity keeps you growing long after talent has taken you as far as it can. 🎙️ Build your personal “board of directors.” Every man needs people around him who will tell him the truth, challenge him, and help him see what he cannot see on his own. 🎙️ Your habits become your life. Early mornings, discipline, consistency, and doing the little things well matter more than waiting for some massive breakthrough. 🎙️ Leadership starts with you. Before you ask your team, your family, or anyone else to raise their standard, be willing to set it yourself. 🎙️ Vulnerability is not weakness. The strongest men are still willing to admit they don’t know, ask for help, and keep learning. Success on the biggest stages is rarely built in the spotlight. It is built through thousands of ordinary decisions when nobody is watching. Kyle’s story is a call to men to stay curious, surround themselves with the right people, embrace discomfort, and keep becoming the kind of leader their teams can trust and their families can follow. Because the goal is not simply to become more successful. It is to become the kind of man who can carry success without losing himself, his relationships, or the people who matter most. Season V Experience #117 The SHIFT with Rich Abril

In this episode of the FATHERS of the FUTURE Podcast, Luke Kayyem sits down with retired Master Sergeant [MSgt], United States Marine Corps, 21 years of service, Rich Abril, for a powerful conversation on self-awareness, introspection, leadership, healing, and what it really takes to rewrite your military career identity: through inner strength, humility, and forgiveness. The conversation is about standards, ownership, and showing up when life gets heavy; staying grounded in your values; and building a life by design, not by default. Rich shares lessons from his journey, the challenges that shaped him, and the mindset required to lead with love. Balancing sensitivity and emotional intelligence with masculinity and "violent energy," reconciling the warrior mindset with being a present, emotionally available father and husband for his girls. 9-11 compelled him to enlist in the Marine Corps, marking the first turning point of his "shift”.Using Rich's military-to-fatherhood journey as a case study of how discipline and emotional growth can coexist. KEYS to VICTORY inside this episode... 🎙 The power of brotherhood and accountability 🎙 Choosing growth and ownership over comfort and pleasureLearning to process and respond rather than react in difficult moments. 🎙 How military service helped him develop and master his own core values This is a call to every man who is always running and gunning at full speed ahead and needs to slow down before he has to.
