    Elul 12 - The Heavenly Courtroom: Preparing Your Case for Life

    Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe opens with the language of judgment, indictments, and mugshots to describe the approaching day of Rosh Hashanah. Yet the heavenly courtroom is unlike any human court. We will stand individually before Hashem without attorneys, representatives, or excuses—but instead of entering the day in despair, we dress in our finest clothing, enjoy festive meals, and celebrate. Rosh Hashanah is both a day of judgment and a joyful coronation of Hashem as King. The joy comes from knowing who the Judge is. Hashem is not a distant or biased human judge; He is the merciful King of kings who wants us to merit life, blessing, and success. Our task during Elul is to arrive with a plan: a thoughtful blueprint for the person we intend to become. The fear of Rosh Hashanah is therefore not merely terror. The Hebrew word yirah also points toward perspective—the recognition that despite technology’s illusion of control, Hashem alone governs the world. The Ten Days of Repentance then become a practical opportunity to demonstrate change. Each day of the week appears during that period, allowing us to show how our Sundays, Mondays, Shabbos observance, and ordinary routines will be different in the coming year. Hashem does not ask for vague promises; He asks us to put our resolutions into action. Rabbi Wolbe concludes by redefining success. Success is not simply wealth, status, or fame. True success means reaching our spiritual potential, strengthening our marriages and families, contributing to our community, refining our character, and deepening our connection with Hashem.     Elul 11 - Teshuvah: From Distance to Divine Closeness

    Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that the High Holiday season carries its own spiritual atmosphere—a season of judgment, accountability, and personal responsibility. Rosh Hashanah is the moment to stop shifting blame and declare, “Hashem, the buck stops with me.” Although we may have fallen short during the year, these sacred days allow us to make amends, correct our direction, and begin again.  A striking Midrash describes Moshe ascending through seven heavenly firmaments. In the highest firmament, closest to Hashem’s throne, the greatest angels offer their highest praise not to Torah, Israel, Jerusalem, Mashiach, or even the World to Come—but to teshuvah. A mitzvah brings us closer to Hashem, while sin creates distance and barriers. Teshuvah is more than the process of moving closer: it is the restoration of closeness itself.    On Rosh Hashanah, every individual passes before Hashem one at a time. Judaism does not view responsibility as a burden from which to escape; it celebrates responsibility, as demonstrated by the joy of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Rosh Hashanah is therefore both serious and joyful: it is a celebration of our accountability and our relationship with Hashem. The shofar’s ram horn reminds us that, even when we are trapped by habits, stubbornness, or self-doubt, we can break free and stop limiting who we can become.   Rabbi Wolbe concludes with a practical assignment: take out a blank piece of paper and write down everything you need to ask Hashem for—health, livelihood, forgiveness, relationships, children, healing, spiritual growth, and the needs of others. The entire month is spent composing that deeply personal message; the blast of the shofar is like pressing “send.” We should not simply arrive at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur unprepared.     Elul 10 - No Regrets: Stop Looking Back and Start Moving Forward

    Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe begins with the painful story of a seventy-year-old man who wished he had reordered his priorities decades earlier—placing greater emphasis on building a Jewish family rather than accumulating wealth and advancing his career. His experience reveals how deeply regret can hurt. Yet the purpose of reflecting on the past is not to remain trapped in sorrow over what might have been. Every person is given a unique life by Hashem: a particular history, family, personality, set of abilities, challenges, successes, and mistakes. Comparing our circumstances with another person’s is meaningless, because with their circumstances, we would no longer be ourselves. Hashem does not expect us to achieve someone else’s perfection. He gives each of us the precise tools needed to pursue our own. Regret is an essential part of teshuvah only when it leads immediately to change. The rearview mirror is necessary, but it is much smaller than the windshield because most of our attention must remain focused on the road ahead. No matter how many decades appear to have been wasted, we still have today.     Elul 9 - One Small Step: The Elul Strategy That Lasts

    In this episode, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe presents one of the most important tools for spiritual growth during Elul: never try to transform yourself by making an unsustainable leap. Although the weeks leading to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur inspire ambitious resolutions, genuine growth usually happens through small, deliberate steps. A person who tries to change everything at once is likely to fall—and may then blame Hashem, the process, or themselves for the failure. Rabbi Wolbe offers a powerful interpretation of the evening prayer asking Hashem to remove the spiritual adversary “from before us and from behind us.” The obstacles before us are the challenges that block our progress. The danger from behind is the voice that pushes us to move too quickly, take on too much, and run before we have learned to walk. Falling is not itself the greatest danger; righteous people fall and rise again. The greater danger is falling so painfully that we become discouraged and decide, “I tried. This is not for me.” Spiritual growth resembles climbing a ladder: one rung at a time. Instead of trying to master the entire prayer book, understand one line. Instead of imagining that you must learn the entire Talmud, begin with one word, one passage, or one page. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s attendance at a celebration for someone who completed a single page of Talmud demonstrates that an accomplishment’s greatness is measured not only by its size, but also by the effort, persistence, and obstacles overcome.     Elul 8 - Elul to Yom Kippur: 40 Days to Transformation

    Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the distinctive meaning of the number forty in Judaism. Forty appears repeatedly at moments of creation and transformation: the Flood lasted forty days and nights, pregnancy lasts forty weeks, a mikvah requires forty se’ah of water, Moshe remained on Mount Sinai for forty days, and the journey from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur spans forty days. Even the Torah’s punishment of thirty-nine lashes is described as “forty minus one.” Together, these examples reveal forty as the number associated with becoming something new. Each example involves a fundamental change of state. The Flood renewed the world; gestation produces a new life; immersion in a mikvah moves a person from ritual impurity to purity; conversion creates a new Jewish identity; and Moshe’s ascent helped transform a nation of former slaves into a sanctified people. In the same way, the forty days from Elul through Yom Kippur give every person the ability to transform spiritually and approach Hashem as someone genuinely new. Teshuvah is not merely an apology for past actions. Sin creates barriers between a person and Hashem, while repentance removes those barriers and restores the original closeness of the relationship. This is why Yom Kippur, despite its fasting and seriousness, is one of the happiest days of the Jewish year: sincere repentance brings forgiveness, atonement, wholeness, and a clean slate.     Elul 7 - Beginnings Matter: Why You Shouldn’t Just “Show Up” to Rosh Hashanah

    Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary power of beginnings. Drawing on examples involving Abraham, Noah, Rav Chia, the rededication of the Temple at Hanukkah, young Torah students, and the first year of marriage, he explains that beginnings establish roots and shape everything that follows. Because Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the new year, Elul is our opportunity to prepare ourselves to enter it in the purest, holiest, and most intentional state possible.  Rosh Hashanah is presented as a microcosm of the coming year. Its joy, prayer, mitzvahs, symbolic foods, and spiritual atmosphere are not merely isolated customs; they express the kind of year we hope to create. Endings are equally important because every strong ending produces a new beginning. By finishing Elul with growth, higher standards, and changed habits, we demonstrate that we are ready to begin again.   Rabbi Wolbe also revisits the difference between human and Divine forgiveness. Human forgiveness often resembles an erasable pen: the words fade, but the mark remains. Hashem’s forgiveness resembles a pencil erased completely. Once forgiveness is granted, the old wrongdoing is not kept in a file to be used against us later. Yom Kippur offers a genuine clean slate and the opportunity to present ourselves as changed people.  Finally, the parable of the diamonds and coconuts challenges us to distinguish between what is temporarily valuable in this world and what possesses eternal value. Money, possessions, and status may be useful here, but mitzvahs, character, closeness to Hashem, and fulfilling our unique purpose are the “diamonds” we were sent to collect.     Why Hashem Lets Us Make Mistakes [Day 193 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Fear of Heaven 9]

    In Day 193 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring the remarkable ways human beings reflect, on a limited scale, qualities Hashem placed into creation. Just as Hashem distinguishes between good and evil, human beings possess the capacity to discern between them. And just as Hashem created and formed the world, mankind has been endowed with extraordinary creative abilities—to build, plant, develop, transform, and accomplish. But human potential does not mean effortless success. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that there are no shortcuts. Greatness requires hard work, Torah study, understanding the ways of Hashem, and ultimately Hashem's assistance. The extraordinary capacities placed within us are possibilities that must be cultivated. The lesson also draws a fascinating parallel between Hashem and the neshamah: neither can be perceived with our physical eyes. We cannot see a soul entering the body at birth or departing at death, yet its reality defines human life. Similarly, the inner thoughts of another person remain hidden from us, while Hashem knows what lies within every heart. Rabbi Wolbe then explains the purpose of the Yetzer Tov and Yetzer Hara. Human beings were deliberately placed into a world of competing impulses so that our choices would have meaning. Our capacity to build or destroy, plant or uproot, accumulate or relinquish, exercise power or restraint creates the arena in which free will operates. The challenge is not to live without an evil inclination, but to strengthen the Yetzer Tov sufficiently to govern it. The lesson concludes with the essential balance between Divine judgment and Divine mercy. Rabbi Wolbe discusses Rashi's teaching on the opening of the Torah: creation is introduced with the Divine name Elohim, associated with judgment. Yet a world operating through strict judgment alone could not endure. Human beings need the possibility of making mistakes, repenting, growing, and trying again. Hashem therefore allows mercy to accompany judgment. Our greatness is found precisely within this system. We possess tremendous potential, but we also possess competing desires and the ability to fail. The person who repeatedly chooses the Yetzer Tov over the Yetzer Hara transforms that struggle into spiritual greatness.     Unlocking Your God-Given Potential [Day 192 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Fear of Heaven 8]

    In Day 192 of The Ways of the Righteous (Orchot Tzaddikim), in the Gate of Fear of Heaven, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary greatness and potential Hashem placed within every human being. Humanity is unique among creation because we possess a neshamah capable of attaining wisdom, penetrating profound ideas, and recognizing both the physical world and the spiritual reality behind it. Rabbi Wolbe compares the Torah to life's owner's manual. A table, computer, or even a door comes with instructions explaining how it should be assembled and used. Life is infinitely more complicated, so Hashem gave us His instructions as well. The Torah teaches us how to approach marriage, raise children, develop ourselves, and understand the purpose for which we were created. If we want to know how to maximize life, we need to study the manual provided by its Creator. The lesson compares our relationship with Hashem to a king who brings trusted servants into his innermost chambers, reveals his treasures and secrets, and entrusts them with tremendous responsibility. The very fact that the king shares so much with them demonstrates how highly he regards them. Similarly, Hashem allows humanity to discover the extraordinary wisdom embedded throughout creation and gives us dominion over the physical world. This should awaken us to both our greatness and our responsibility. Rabbi Wolbe then offers a fascinating explanation for humanity's seemingly endless ambition. Our sages teach that one who has one hundred wants two hundred, and one who has two hundred wants four hundred. The soul originates from a lofty spiritual realm and naturally yearns to rise higher. But when that tremendous drive becomes redirected through the physical body, the desire for spiritual greatness can become a pursuit of bigger houses, greater wealth, higher positions, nicer possessions, and more honor. The goal, therefore, isn't to eliminate our drive for greatness—it is to redirect it upward. The closer we become to Hashem through Torah and mitzvot, the more we uncover the enormous spiritual potential already within us. Rabbi Wolbe concludes that human beings are capable of far more than we imagine.
