Education Series Part 5 | How to Homeschool, Start a Microschool, and Build What Doesn’t Exist with Candace Lehenbauer

How do you homeschool six kids, start a microschool, and build something that doesn’t exist yet? Candace Lehenbauer has done all three, and she’s sharing the real, unpolished story of how to start a microschool. In Part 5 of our Education Series, recorded live at an education conference, I sit down with my friend Candace for her fourth visit to the show. After nearly two decades of homeschooling her six kids, Candace founded Tapestry Academy, a microschool in Boca Raton, and has worked as a Prenda microschool guide. She also runs Microschool Florida, a free directory that helps families across the state, from Miami to Tampa, find microschools and microschool programs near them. What is a microschool? A microschool is a small learning community, often just a handful of mixed-age students, built around personalized learning. Microschools are one of the fastest-growing education options in America, and Florida is at the center of that growth. The Florida scholarship through Step Up for Students is, partially, fueling that growth. We spent the conference talking about what students need and what teachers need. This conversation is for the founders: the moms, educators, and dreamers building something with their own hands, often alone. Candace pulls back the curtain on what founding really looks like. She talks about the 1099 she didn’t know she had to file, the first teacher who left a month in, and the hard move from free homeschool co-op classes to a microschool with tuition. Through all of it, she couldn’t stop thinking about the school she wanted to build. She saw it, and she couldn’t unsee it. In this episode, we explore: How to start a microschool, and what no one tells youMoving from homeschool co-op classes to paid microschool tuitionHiring your first teacher, contracts, and the paperwork side of microschool jobsChoosing and changing microschool curriculum, and why freedom is the best partBuilding a sustainable microschool: co-op days, enrichment programs, online resources, and membershipsWhy “nobody trusts the polished anything,” and why your story beats a flyerOur tiny founders’ walking club, and why you don’t need to pay anyone to find your peopleYour “six-pack”: the people who believe in you no matter whatHow Candace used The Secrets of Happy Families to shape her microschool’s cultureHer magic-wand wish for education, including more funding and grants for microschool foundersWhat she’d tell herself on day oneMemorable moments: “Nobody trusts the polished anything.”When you’re your own worst critic, picture your six-pack around a boardroom table and ask what they’d tell you.Failure isn’t a detour. It’s how you find out what works.Looking for a microschool near you? Start with Candace’s Microschool Florida directory. Education Series Part 4 | Teaching the Brain to See Itself: ADHD, Anxiety, and Neurofeedback with Dr. Larthenia Howard

Does neurofeedback therapy work? Should you utilize neurofeedback therapy for your kids? Today we're talking about neurofeedback (also known as biofeedback) therapy for ADHD, anxiety, and academic challenges.  In Part 4 of our Education Series, recorded live at The Step Up for Students Conference in Orlando, Florida Ryann Watkin sits down with Dr. Larthenia Howard, known to so many as Dr. L.  After 26 years in K-12 education, including time as a school principal, Dr. L became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Neurofeedback Practitioner. Today she helps kids and adults with ADHD, anxiety, and regulation through a brain-based approach. This conversation is full of joy and so much hope. Dr. L reminds us that education was never meant to be about filling kids up with information. It’s about helping a whole person see that every part of them matters. In this episode, we explore: The real heart of education (hint: it’s not more information)The fear Dr. L sees most often in parents: that something is wrong with their childHow the messages kids hear from teachers, peers, and parents become the story they tell about themselvesWhy kids reveal how they see themselves when you ask about their friendsWhat neurofeedback actually is, in plain languageHow the brain can learn to regulate itself, and what that means for ADHD, anxiety, and focusConnect with Dr. L: Anchor of Hope Family Therapy, LLC https://myanchorofhopetherapy.com/ If this episode speaks to you, share it with a parent or teacher who’s been carrying this worry alone. Raising Wild Hearts with Ryann Watkin explores psychology, spirituality, parenthood, and the intersection where they all come together. 🎧Yoto Player | Screen Free Fun for Kids The audio player that makes screen free time easier. Education Series Part 3 | Where’d the Executive Functioning Go? Supporting Teachers with Beth Sharpe

Where did the executive functioning go? It’s the question Beth Sharpe hears from schools more than any other. But underneath it is a bigger one: who’s supporting the teachers, parents, and students trying to figure it out? I sat down with Beth Sharpe of Engage the Brain the day after we shared a panel on how kids, families, and schools can thrive. Beth spent years teaching kindergarten and first grade, and now she helps schools give their teachers the training and support they’ve been missing. Beth makes the case that support can’t just show up in a crisis. Teachers need it woven into the whole school year, so when the hard moment comes, they already have something to draw from. She also shares what schools are actually asking for right now, and executive functioning tops the list, almost every time. We also get into: Why so many teachers feel unsupported, and how some private schools are tapping Title II funding for professional developmentUniversal design classrooms: why a set of headphones should be available to any kid who needs them, not just the one with an IEPHow technology arrived faster than we taught kids to use itWhy our kids need room to fail, including the story of her 22-year-old son’s very fast apartment leaseFinding the middle ground between helicopter parenting and burned-out parentingHer magic-wand fix for education, and why a kindergarten teacher is often the first person to have the hard conversation with a parentA grandfather who couldn’t find the program his grandson needed, so he decided to build itWhether you’re an educator, a parent, or (like most of the people in that room) both, this one is a reminder that the adults holding our kids need holding too. Engage the Brain supports learners from Pre-K through adulthood in Central Florida and online, and families using Step Up For Students scholarships can work with them directly. Education Series Part 2 | The Purpose of Education Isn't Actually What We Thought with John Ricard

This isn't just a lesson in Latin. It's a conversation about courage, fortitude, resilience, and what education was always meant to be.  In Part 2 of the education series, we're going back to the roots of the words we use every day and finding out— they have a lot to teach us about how kids (and the rest of us) actually grow and learn. I sat down with John Ricard, a Latin teacher with nearly 20 years in the classroom, at the Step Up for Students Conference in Orlando, Florida in June 2026.  John talks about why he cares more about the formation of a person than a 97 on a test. He also explains how becoming a dad made him realize kids need structure and zeal. And he shares the simple classroom practice that teaches resilience. We also get into: Why courage is a muscle, and the concept of "failing harder"The difference between owning knowledge and just leasing itWhy he calls Latin an eternal language, not a dead one (and how the space shuttle traces back to Roman roads)His "Plato's cave" moment, when he realized the education choice movement is real, growing, and hungry for classical learningHow niche subjects like Latin and journalism may find new life outside traditional schoolsWhether you're a parent, an educator, or someone who's quietly wondered where our curiosity went, this one will get you thinking about what we're really leading out of the people we love. 📝Check out Latin Fluency by John Ricard on Substack  🎧Yoto Player | Screen Free Fun for Kids The audio player that makes screen free time easier. Education Series Part 1 | The Whole Child: Why Feelings, Safety & the Brain Matter in Education with Dr. Gabby Mancini

What do kids actually need in order to learn, grow and thrive? In this first episode of the Raising Wild Hearts Education Series, Ryann sits down with Dr. Gabriela “Gabby” Mancini, a licensed psychologist, to explore the connection between the brain, emotions, emotional safety and learning. Dr. Gabby explains why education is about so much more than academics, how emotional literacy impacts a child’s ability to learn, and why understanding what’s happening in the brain can help both parents and educators respond with more awareness and intention. They also talk about why kids may appear perfectly regulated at school and then completely unravel at home, the “safety effect” that can make home the place where children finally let their guard down, and why that can actually be a sign of emotional safety—not failure. You’ll also hear an important conversation about modeling healthy emotional regulation as adults, repairing after we lose our cool, allowing children to learn through mistakes, and why resilience is built through the moments that don’t go perfectly. And when asked what she would change about education, Dr. Gabby’s answer gets to the heart of this entire series: move away from a one-size-fits-all model and create more flexible, adaptable learning environments that honor the individual child. This conversation is for parents, teachers, educators and anyone asking a bigger question about education: What's possible for our kids when we educate the whole child? 🎡The Feelings Wheel +Follow the Raising Wild Hearts Podcast: https://raisingwildhearts.buzzsprout.com/585529/follow ⭐️Write a Review for Raising Wild Hearts on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/raising-wild-hearts-with-ryann-watkin/id1480064322  Support the show 🛍️ Thank you to our incredible affiliates. When Motherhood Rocks Your World: Postpartum Advice You Can Use in Any Season with Dr. Laura Le

What does it really take to thrive in motherhood? In this episode of Raising Wild Hearts, Ryann sits down with Dr. Laura Le, chiropractor, mother, and author of Postpartum Reimagined, for an honest conversation about postpartum recovery, motherhood identity, matrescence, perfectionism, self-trust, nervous system regulation, and the emotional transformation that can come with becoming a mom. 📚Get Dr. Laura Le's Book, Postpartum Reimagined: A Mom's Complete Holistic Guide to Healing, Finding Your Balance, and Thriving in Motherhood : https://amzn.to/4ifeIC6 They explore why so many women enter motherhood trying to “do it right,” how achievement and perfectionism can follow us into parenting, and why the pressure to bounce back after having a baby can make the postpartum season even harder. Dr. Laura shares why asking for help is not a sign of failure, how motherhood can bring old wounds and family patterns to the surface, and why self-awareness and self-trust are essential for maternal wellbeing and confident parenting. Ryann and Dr. Laura also talk about postpartum mental health, the identity shift of becoming a mother, generational parenting patterns, relationships with our own mothers and mothers-in-law, the language we use with our children, raising confident kids, and what it looks like to become a trusted guide as our children grow. If you’ve ever struggled with postpartum anxiety, mom guilt, perfectionism, losing yourself in motherhood, or wondering who you are after becoming a mom, this episode is for you. This is a conversation about thriving in motherhood—not by becoming a perfect mom, but by building self-trust, creating support, honoring your needs, and stepping into who motherhood is asking you to become. 🎧Yoto Player | Screen Free Fun for Kids The audio player that makes screen free time easier. Parasites, Metabolic Health & Becoming a More Balanced Human with Heather Fox

What if some of the things we’ve accepted as “normal”—exhaustion, inflammation, cravings, food noise, feeling wired but tired—are actually signals asking us to pay attention? In this episode of Raising Wild Hearts, Ryann sits down with Heather Fox, founder of The Well/Being Lounge, for a wide-ranging conversation about parasites, cleansing, metabolic health, nervous system regulation, self-trust, and what it really means to become a more balanced human. Heather shares insights from nearly 30 years of working with the body, beginning as a massage therapist working with world-class and Olympic-level athletes and eventually expanding her work into nervous system regulation and whole-person wellness. Ryann also shares her personal experience completing Heather’s seven-day parasite cleanse—including one unexpected shift: the “food noise” got quiet. They explore why so many of us have normalized not feeling well, simple ways to support a more regulated state, the importance of learning to listen to our bodies, and why true wellness may be less about constantly adding another solution and more about reconnecting with ourselves. And because this is Raising Wild Hearts, the conversation ultimately comes back to the next generation: how does doing our own inner work change what our children see, experience, and carry forward? In this episode: • Parasite cleanses and why we’re hearing so much about them • Ryann’s personal experience with Heather’s seven-day cleanse • Food noise, cravings, and our relationship with nourishment • Metabolic health and modern wellness • Nervous system regulation and returning to baseline • Simple practices Heather uses to support well-being • Self-trust and learning to listen to the body • Motherhood, personal growth, and what we model for our children Connect with Heather: The Well/Being Lounge: https://wellbeing-pb.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wellbeingloungepb/ Join us at Rise & Flourish: September 26, 2026 | Delray Beach, Florida A one-day experience for women ready to be poured into, reconnect, and leave with more balance, belonging, and a roadmap for more ease.
