    Ep3 - Yankee

    “He doesn’t dance so much as strut; he doesn’t act so much as sell you his desire to entertain.” Roger Ebert on James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1998) The song “You’re a Grand Old Flag” brings me back to elementary school music class where we read song lyrics and notes out of a hard cover book. I never questioned this song in particular, “Rockin’ Robin” maybe, but a song about our American flag seemed like a typical, patriotic toon that a child would be taught. Watching “Yankee Doodle Dandy” made me rethink what I thought I knew about this song.     [Mr. Potato Head rearranges his facial features crazily] Mr. Potato Head: Hey, Hamm. Look, I’m Picasso! Hamm: I don’t get it. Mr. Potato Head: You uncultured swine! What’re you lookin’ at, ya hockey puck? You’ve probably seen or, at least, have heard of Toy Story. The popular franchise has spanned over 3 decades, and its most recent installment was released just this year in 2019. Even though you may know about its heartwarming story about friendship, or you’ve heard the classic tune “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman, you may not know about the origin of how this film came to be.     "Who knew it would take a jew to make a good film about Christ" - William Wyler Director of Ben-Hur (1959) Have you ever scrolled through your watchlist, stopped at Ben-Hur, noticed it's crazy run-time, and kept on scrolling? Totally understandable. Not many people want to invest time into watching a 3 hour and 44 minute religious movie. But just because our modern day attention spans can't handle it, that doesn't mean Ben-Hur is unimportant in film history.
