There’s a problem with True Crime. Creators idolize perpetrators, shame victims, or are completely checked out on cases while they focus on other things. However, we can’t forget there are victims who lost their lives and families who are still grieving to this day. Furthermore, many True Crime outlets spend their time focusing on themselves or rambling, instead of getting right to the facts of the case. We hear you, this is frustrating. The Misery Machine focuses on cases the media fails to give proper attention to. We want to help give those a voice that never got to have one, to begin with. We also cover aspects of cases that other podcasts might look the other way on, and the way that these cases impact their communities for generations. It’s not enough to simply cover a case, our platform must be used to make a difference.

    The Bizarre Case of Matthew James Dunmire

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Ohio to discuss the case of Matthew James Dunmire, a a 31-year-old aspiring musician and father who was murdered in March 2021. His death became the subject of a high-profile federal investigation after his body was discovered in a secluded wooded area of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. On March 5, 2021, Matthew left a local bar to meet a woman he had been communicating with online. Surveillance footage and phone records tracked him to an Airbnb and eventually to the park's Terra Vista Natural Study Area. He was shot once in the back of the head. Hikers discovered his body three days later. Chelsea Perkins (aka Chelsea Savage), a 35-year-old U.S. Coast Guard veteran and adult film performer from Virginia, was identified as the killer. Chelsea lured Matthew to the national park under the false pretense of filming a video. Prosecutors characterized the crime as a calculated "revenge killing". Chelsea had accused Matthew of sexual assault in Virginia Beach back in 2017. Local police investigated at the time, but no charges were filed due to a lack of evidence. In May of 2025, Chelsea Perkins pleaded guilty in federal court to second-degree murder and using a firearm in a violent crime. On September 9, 2025, a federal judge sentenced her to 22.5 years in prison. She is serving her sentence at a federal facility in West Virginia.     The Case of the Oklahoma Walker Family

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Oklahoma to discuss the case of Dustin Joel Walker and Cherie Dawn Walker, a couple who received life prison sentences in mid-2026 following a horrific child sexual abuse and neglect investigation in Muskogee County. The case came to light in August 2025 when Cherie's 11-year-old daughter gave birth at home without any prenatal care or medical assistance, and subsequent DNA tests proved that her stepfather, Dustin, was the father of the child. : When authorities raided the Muskogee residence, they discovered the couple's five other children (ages 2 to 9) living in absolute squalor. The home had no running water or air conditioning, was heavily doused in animal feces and urine, and the children were found completely unclothed. Cherie's mother, Michelle Lynn Justus, was charged with six counts of felony child neglect. She has not entered a guilty plea, and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.     The Case of Scooter Abrahamsen, Amanda Logue (Sunny Dae) & Jason Andrews (aka Addison)

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head to New Port Richey, Florida, to discuss the case of 41-year-old Scooter Abrahamsen, who was brutally murdered on May 15th, 2010 by pornstar couple Amanda Logue (aka Sunny Dae) and Jason Andrews (aka Addison). Scooter, known locally as a fun-loving biker and owner of Embellishing Tattoo & Piercing (among other businesses), hosted a sex party at his residence. He hired Amanda to work at the party. While guests were present, Amanda and her boyfriend exchanged an extensive series of graphic text messages plotting Scooter's murder and robbery. Once the other guests departed around 5:00 AM, Amanda instructed Scooter to lie face down on a massage table. She then messaged Jason, who was waiting outside in a car, giving him the signal to enter. Together, they attacked Scooter, stabbing him multiple times and fracturing his skull with a sledgehammer. After the murder, they stole $6,000 in cash, credit cards, a laptop, and cameras.     The Alleged Crimes of Sarah Grace Patrick (Kristin & James Brock)

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head back to Georgia to discuss the crimes of Sarah Grace Patrick, a teenage girl who, according to prosecutors, killed her mother and stepfather in cold blood. On February 20th, 2025, 41-year-old Kristin Brock and her husband, 45-year-old James Brock were found shot to death in their bed. Their then 5-year-old daughter discovered their bodies. Sarah, who was 16 at the time, called 911. Following the murders, Sarah posted emotional videos on TikTok and delivered a funeral eulogy that concluded with "I'm sorry," which prosecutors contend was part of an effort to manipulate public opinion. She also contacted a number of true crime content creators, begging for them to cover he parent's story... Some did. Sarah remains held without bond at the Carroll County Jail. She has pleaded not guilty, and her biological father, as well as several members of her church have publicly maintained that she is 100% innocent.     The Tragic Case of Casper O'Brien

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Flint Township, Michigan, to discuss the case of 7-year-old Casper O'Brien, a little boy who died in November of 2025 from extreme medical neglect. At the time of his death, Casper was 4 feet 2 inches tall, and weighed 220lbs, which was nearly 4 times the healthy average for his age. The Genesee County Medical Examiner ruled that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, with extreme morbid obesity serving as a major contributing factor. First responders described the family's residence as a severe, "deplorable" hoarding environment with piles of trash and animal feces scattered throughout the home.     The Case of Liu Hong Mei (aka The Kallang Body Parts Murder)

    This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Singapore to discuss the case of Liu Hong Mei, a 22-year-old factory worker from China who was murdered and dismembered by her supervisors and lover, Leong Siew Chor. According to reports, 50-year-old Leong Siew Chor killed Liu Hong Mei in order to hide their year-long affair, as well as the theft of her ATM card (and subsequent funds). In June of 2005, he strangled her to death in his apartment with a towel, before dismembering her body and disposing of her the Kallang River and nearby garbage bins. Leong Siew Chor was later arrested, tried, and found guilty, and was later hanged at Changi Prison in November of 2007.
