When Strong Becomes Survival: Who Are You Beneath the Person Everyone Depends On?

Together, Coach Waugh and Coach Arecia explore the protective behaviors we sometimes mistake for personality, the hidden cost of always being dependable, boundaries without guilt, and what happens when experiences from an old workplace, relationship, or environment quietly follow us into the next one. Coach Arecia shares how her own workplace experiences once caused her voice to become smaller, even after she entered a healthier professional environment. The conversation examines why leaving a difficult environment does not necessarily mean the environment has left us. The conversation also explores the difference between coaching and rescuing. As Coach Arecia explains: “If I'm giving her the answers, now I'm not coaching. I'm becoming a crutch.” Coach Waugh reflects on her own transition from nursing, where identifying and fixing problems was part of the work, into coaching, where sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is stop trying to fix someone and create enough space to truly hear them. In this episode, you'll explore: • When strength quietly becomes survival• How protective behaviors can begin to feel like personality• The emotional cost of always being “the dependable one”• Boundaries, people-pleasing, and learning to say no• How old environments can influence new workplaces and relationships• Why coaching is different from advice, rescuing, or fixing• Holding space without taking away another person's agency• Why asking for appropriate support can be an act of strength• How to begin listening to yourself again Near the end of the conversation, Coach Arecia turns one of our most common responses into a powerful coaching question: “What does ‘I'm fine’ mean to you?” Because “I'm fine” may mean I'm okay. It may mean I'm not ready to talk. It may mean I don't know how to explain it. It may even mean I don't feel ready to tell you. Rather than defining another person's experience for them, Coach Arecia creates room for them to define “fine” for themselves. A question for you: What does “I'm fine” mean to you?
