MindFlow: The Power of Emotional Literacy with Sarah Bjork

What if one of the keys to better relationships, healthier communication, and greater emotional well-being is simply learning how to identify and name what you’re feeling? In this episode, I’m talking with Sarah Bjork, creator of MindFlow, about emotional literacy and why understanding our emotions is such an important foundation for emotional regulation and emotional intelligence. Sarah became interested in emotional literacy after seeing firsthand how difficult it can be for adults who were never taught how to recognize or express their emotions. She also became especially interested in the subject while raising two young sons and noticing how frequently parenting resources emphasized the importance of helping children develop emotional awareness. Sarah explains the difference between emotional literacy and emotional intelligence. Emotional literacy is the ability to recognize, understand, and accurately label our emotions. Emotional intelligence builds on that foundation, helping us use emotional awareness to make decisions, manage relationships, communicate effectively, and navigate social situations. We talk about why simply putting words to an emotion can change the way we experience it, why suppressing emotions doesn't make them disappear, and how unrecognized emotions can affect our relationships, communication, and overall well-being. Sarah also shares the story behind MindFlow, an app she created to make emotional processing simple and accessible. Using a four-step process, MindFlow helps users identify an emotion, understand its intensity, express it through brief journaling or drawing, and then decide whether they want to hold onto it or release it. The app also keeps a record of your emotional journey, which can help you notice patterns over time or provide information to discuss with a therapist or other professional. Whether you're trying to better understand yourself, improve your relationships, communicate more effectively, or help your children develop healthy emotional skills, this conversation offers practical ideas for becoming more emotionally literate. In this episode, we talk about: What emotional literacy is and why it mattersThe difference between emotional literacy and emotional intelligenceWhy identifying and naming emotions can help us process themWhat happens when we continually suppress or ignore our emotionsHow emotional awareness can affect relationships and communicationWhy many people struggle to find the words to describe what they feelAlexithymia and difficulty identifying or describing emotionsThe power of affect labelingThe connection between emotional literacy and emotional regulationHow parents can help children develop emotional awarenessThe four-step process behind the MindFlow appUsing journaling and drawing to express emotionsTracking emotional patterns over timeSimple ways to begin developing greater emotional awarenessSarah Bjork is the creator of MindFlow, a mother, director of Hope for Healing, author, and award-winning artist. Stephanie Hazard - Making Sobriety Stick

Healing Your Relationship with Food, Alcohol, and Yourself with Stephanie Hazard Many of us turn to food, alcohol, or other coping mechanisms when life feels overwhelming. But what if those behaviors aren't signs of weakness or failure? What if they're actually attempts to feel safe? In this insightful episode, Linda sits down with recovery coach, speaker, and author Stephanie Hazard to discuss healing our relationship with food, alcohol, and ourselves. Stephanie shares her personal journey, which began at age 11 when she went on her first diet after years of teasing and comparing herself to her mother, a model and actress. What started as a desire to be accepted eventually developed into an eating disorder and later struggles with alcohol. Stephanie explains that addictions and unhealthy behaviors often serve an important purpose, even when we're not consciously aware of it. At their core, they help regulate our nervous system and create a sense of safety. Whether it's controlling food intake, drinking alcohol, or engaging in other compulsive behaviors, these actions are often attempts to soothe emotional distress and regain a sense of control. Drawing from Polyvagal Theory, Stephanie explains how our nervous system constantly scans for safety or danger. When we understand these biological responses, we can approach recovery with greater compassion and effectiveness. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with me?" we can begin asking, "What happened to me?" and "What do I need to feel safe enough?" During this conversation, Stephanie also clarifies the difference between coping mechanisms and coping skills. While coping mechanisms often help us avoid, numb, or escape uncomfortable emotions, coping skills help us build a healthier, more fulfilling life. In recognition of National Recovery Month, Stephanie shares her own recovery journey and discusses the many resources available to support healing. She describes recovery as a "stew" made up of many helpful ingredients, including therapy, support groups, recovery coaching, breathwork, community, and self-awareness. She emphasizes that recovery is not one-size-fits-all and encourages each person to define what recovery means for them. Whether you're navigating challenges with food, alcohol, or any other unhealthy coping pattern, this episode offers hope, practical tools, and a compassionate reminder that recovery is about much more than quitting a behavior—it's about creating a life that feels meaningful, connected, and joyful. About Stephanie Hazard Stephanie Hazard is a Certified Recovery Coach, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, Certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, speaker, and author of Making Sobriety Stick. She specializes in helping individuals heal from eating disorders, alcohol dependency, and other addictive behaviors through trauma-informed and polyvagal-informed approaches. Learn more about Stephanie and her work at: Path Toward Recovery Key Takeaways Addictions often develop as attempts to create safety and regulate the nervous system.Food and alcohol are frequently used to soothe emotional discomfort rather than satisfy physical needs.Polyvagal Theory helps explain why we react differently depending on whether we feel safe, threatened, or overwhelmed.Recovery begins with compassion and understanding, not shame and self-criticism.Coping mechanisms numb or avoid difficult emotions; coping skills help create a healthier life.Recovery looks different for everyone and should be tailored to individual goals and values.Being "alcohol-free" can feel more empowering and intentional than viewing recovery as restriction.Healing involves reconnecting with yourself, your body, and supportive relationships.Breathwork, active listening, and nervous system regulation can be powerful tools for recovery.Lasting recovery is about creating a life that feels joyful, meaningful, and worth living.Listen, Share, and Support If this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today. Feel Good in Your Body: Breaking Free from Shame-Based Fitness with Tyler Bramlett

Feel good in and about your body. Tyler Bramlett shares how to break free from toxic fitness culture, improve mobility and strength, and build a healthier relationship with your body through small, consistent habits that create lasting change. In this episode of Linda's Corner, movement coach, father, podcast host, and WeShape co-founder Tyler Bramlett shares a refreshing and empowering perspective on fitness, body image, and long-term health. Coach Tyler challenges the shame-based messages that dominate much of the fitness industry and explains why true wellness begins when we stop tying our worth to our appearance. Coach Tyler shares his personal journey of recovery after being hit by a car as a teenager and later experiencing another serious injury that required him to learn how to walk again. During those difficult seasons, he gained a deep appreciation for what his body could do rather than how it looked. That experience transformed his understanding of health, movement, and self-worth. Together, we discuss how many people spend years criticizing their bodies and believing they'll finally be happy once they reach a certain weight, size, or fitness level—only to discover that self-criticism doesn't disappear when the goal is achieved. Coach Tyler explains why we must "unlearn" toxic fitness and diet culture and replace it with a healthier approach focused on function, strength, mobility, and feeling good. Tyler also introduces his simple framework for creating lasting change. The ABCs stand for Act on Basics Consistently, while the 1-2-3 method encourages us to: Become awarePauseRewrite or replace unhealthy habits and movement patternsHe shares practical examples of how small adjustments in everyday movement can strengthen the body, reduce pain, and improve mobility over time. We also discuss: Why shame is such a powerful force in the fitness industryHow body image affects mental and emotional well-beingThe difference between exercising for punishment versus self-careWhy "no pain, no gain" can be a harmful mindsetHow consistency beats intensity for long-term successThe importance of strength, flexibility, coordination, and mobilityWhy patience is essential when creating lasting changeHow small daily habits can dramatically improve your quality of lifeThrough WeShape, Tyler helps people build personalized movement routines that focus on restoring strength, improving mobility, reducing aches and pains, and helping people feel confident in their bodies again. His message is simple but powerful: the goal isn't perfection—it's longevity, function, and feeling good. You can learn more about Coach Tyler Bramlett and WeShape at weshape.com. Listen Someone Into Existence with Affect Labeling - Doug Noll

Award-winning mediator and TEDx speaker Doug Noll reveals a simple communication technique that can calm anger, resolve conflict, and strengthen relationships in seconds. Discover why the words "You feel..." may be the most powerful phrase you'll ever use. Doug Noll is an award-winning mediator, bestselling author, TEDx speaker, creator of the Noll Method™, and founder of the Prison of Peace program. After spending 22 years as a successful trial lawyer, Doug changed careers and dedicated his life to helping people solve difficult, highly emotional conflicts. In this fascinating conversation, Doug shares insights from his TEDx Talk, Listen Someone Into Existence, and explains how one simple skill can dramatically improve communication. Instead of focusing on the words people say, Doug teaches us to listen for the emotions behind the words and reflect those emotions back using simple statements such as, "You feel frustrated," "You feel misunderstood," or "You feel disrespected." This technique, called affect labeling, helps people feel seen, heard, and understood. Research shows that accurately naming emotions can calm the brain's emotional centers in seconds, reducing tension and creating trust. Doug has used these methods in some of America's most violent prisons through his Prison of Peace program, helping inmates learn to manage emotions and resolve conflict peacefully. The same skills can be used in marriages, families, parenting, workplaces, and leadership roles. We also discuss why empathy is not weakness but a powerful leadership skill. Doug challenges traditional communication advice and explains why direct "You feel..." statements are often more effective than common "I think you're feeling..." responses. Doug shares a simple three-step process: Ignore the words.Listen for the emotions.Reflect those emotions back using "You feel..." statements. The result is a practical tool that can help de-escalate conflict, build trust, and create deeper connections in every area of life. In This Episode You'll Learn: How to calm an angry person in 90 seconds or lessThe science behind affect labelingWhy empathy is a leadership skillHow to help others feel seen, heard, and understoodWhy "You feel..." statements build trust and connectionHow these techniques improve relationships, parenting, leadership, and conflict resolutionThe communication skills that transformed violent prison environments About Doug Noll Doug Noll is an award-winning mediator, bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and founder of the Prison of Peace program. Your Body Doesn't Lie: Learning to Trust the Wisdom of the Body with Dr. Kelly McCann

What if your symptoms weren’t your enemy—but your body’s way of asking for help? In this fascinating and empowering episode of Linda’s Corner Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Kelly McCann to explore the deeper meaning behind chronic illness, physical symptoms, and the body’s incredible wisdom. Dr. Kelly is a pioneer in Functional, Integrative, and Environmental Medicine who specializes in uncovering the root causes of complex chronic conditions like Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), mold toxicity, Lyme disease, and persistent infections. You can learn more about Dr. Kelly and her work at Dr. Kelly McCann’s Website After navigating her own serious health challenges—including mold exposure and Lyme disease—Dr. Kelly discovered how profoundly our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and environment influence our physical health. Through her work at The Spring Center in California, she helps patients reconnect with their bodies, restore balance, and reclaim their vitality. During this conversation, we explored the relationship many people have with their bodies. Too often, we view the body as broken, inconvenient, or even the enemy. But Dr. Kelly teaches that the body is deeply intelligent and always communicating with us. Symptoms are not random punishments—they are messages guiding us toward healing. We discussed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, a condition where the body’s defense systems become hypersensitive and overreactive. Dr. Kelly shared the powerful idea that our mindset and emotional state can influence our susceptibility to toxins and illness. Two people may experience the same toxic exposure, yet one becomes very ill while the other does not. Why? According to Dr. Kelly, our internal beliefs, stress patterns, emotional wounds, and nervous system regulation all play a significant role in how the body responds. She explained how thoughts such as “I’m not safe,” “I’m not good enough,” or “My body is failing me” can create chronic stress patterns that are reflected physically in the body. Rather than blaming ourselves, Dr. Kelly encourages us to become curious and compassionate toward our symptoms and to recognize them as invitations to heal more deeply. We also discussed her transformational masterclass, The Unforgetting Project, which teaches that we are already whole and enough—we have simply forgotten who we truly are beneath the conditioning of the world. From childhood onward, many people absorb messages that they are flawed, unsafe, or unworthy. Dr. Kelly believes healing involves “unforgetting” our true nature and reconnecting with our authentic selves. One of the most practical insights she shared was the importance of allowing emotions to fully move through the body instead of suppressing them. She explained that emotions often complete their natural cycle in about 60–90 seconds if we allow ourselves to feel them fully without resistance. By noticing sensations in the body, identifying the associated emotion, and allowing it to flow through us, we can release trapped emotional energy and create space for healing. This episode is a powerful reminder that healing is not just physical—it’s emotional, mental, spiritual, and deeply personal. If you’ve struggled with chronic symptoms, unexplained illness, or feeling disconnected from your body, this conversation offers hope, insight, and a compassionate new perspective. In This Episode We Discuss: Listening to the wisdom of the body The mind-body connection Why symptoms may actually be messages from the bodyMast Cell Activation Syndrome and hypersensitive defense systemsMold toxicity, Lyme disease, and environmental illnessThe impact of thoughts like “I’m not safe” or “I’m not enough”Nervous system regulation and susceptibility to illnessLearning to trust the wisdom of the bodyEmotional processing and allowing feelings to complete their cycleDr. Kelly’s “Unforgetting Project”Remembering that we are already enough Listen and Connect To learn more about Dr. Kelly McCann and her work, visit:  Dr. Kelly McCann Official Website Listen, Share, and Support If this episode resonated with you, please share it with someone who may need hope today. Naked Out Loud: Vulnerability and the Courage to Live Authentically with Machan Taylor

What happens when you achieve the kind of success most people only dream about… but still feel empty inside? In this deeply moving and inspiring episode, I sit down with Machan Taylor to talk about inner healing, identity, authenticity, and the tension between outward success and inner struggle. Machan is a vocalist, recording artist, performer, composer, educator, and author whose extraordinary career took her to the highest levels of the music industry, performing with legendary artists including Pink Floyd, Sting, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, and George Benson. You can learn more about Machan at Machan Taylor’s official website and connect with her on Facebook and Instagram. Machan shares her remarkable life story beginning in post-war Japan, where her parents met while her father was serving as a soldier during World War II and her mother performed as a singer in an officers’ club. Japanese was Machan’s first language, but when her family immigrated to the United States when she was just four years old, she experienced a profound sense of loss. Suddenly she was separated from her home, her culture, her language, her grandmother, and the people she loved most. As she tried to adapt to life in America, she also faced discrimination and judgment because of her Japanese heritage. Feeling like she didn’t fully belong, Machan learned to bury her emotions and hide parts of herself in order to survive. Years later, she found herself touring the world with Pink Floyd, surrounded by private jets, luxury hotels, and cheering crowds. From the outside, it looked like she had everything. But internally, she struggled with deep feelings of emptiness, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome. Like many people carrying unresolved pain, she turned to alcohol and drugs to numb the hurt. Machan’s powerful new memoir, Naked Out Loud, is a courageous invitation to authenticity and vulnerability. It is the story of reclaiming her voice, embracing her identity, and learning that true healing comes not from perfection or performance, but from honesty and self-acceptance. In this conversation, Machan speaks with extraordinary grace and wisdom about race, trauma, silence, reinvention, healing, and the courage it takes to say: “This is the real me.” After an incredible performing career, Machan returned to school to earn both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and she now teaches voice and performance at New York University. Her journey is a beautiful reminder that it is never too late to rediscover yourself, heal old wounds, and step fully into your authentic voice. In this episode, we discuss: The emotional impact of immigration, loss, and cultural displacementThe hidden pain behind outward successMasking, imposter syndrome, and the fear of not belongingAddiction as an attempt to numb emotional painThe courage to be authentic and vulnerableHealing from trauma and reclaiming your identityThe importance of finding and using your true voiceReinvention, personal growth, and inner healingIf you’ve ever felt like you had to hide parts of yourself to be accepted, or if you’ve struggled with the disconnect between outer achievement and inner peace, this episode will deeply resonate with you. Phage Therapy, Detox & Healing Chronic Health Problems with Dr. Chris Molda

What if your body was designed to heal itself - but something was getting in the way? In this fascinating and hope-filled episode, I talk with Dr. Chris Molda about chronic illness, hidden toxins, and new approaches to healing. Dr. Molda is a functional wellness practitioner, Doctor of Chiropractic, and owner of Molda Functional Wellness. Dr. Molda shares his personal story of facing a “perfect storm” of health problems that left him seriously ill. He battled Covid, contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite, dealt with black mold exposure, and struggled with parasites. Even with his medical background, he found himself searching for better answers and deeper healing. As a chiropractor, Dr. Molda has always believed that the body wants to heal itself. The challenge is finding and removing the things that block healing. He explains what he calls the “Three T’s”: TraumaThoughtsToxinsFor him, toxins became a major problem. Traditional treatments helped somewhat, but they didn’t fully solve the issue. That search for answers eventually led him to induced native phage therapy. During the episode, Dr. Molda explains about bacteriophages, or “phages,” which are viruses that target harmful bacteria. He says our bodies naturally contain trillions of bacteria and viruses, and many of them actually help keep us healthy. According to Dr. Molda, this therapy works by supporting the body’s natural ability to restore balance and fight harmful bacteria. We talked about how this approach has been used for people dealing with Lyme disease, long Covid symptoms, mold toxicity, and other chronic health problems. Dr. Molda also explains what it’s like to work with him. The process starts with a free 15-minute call to see if this approach might be a good fit. If it seems helpful, the next step is a longer consultation where he discusses your health history, goals, expected timeline, and costs. Because appointments are done through phone and Zoom, and treatments can be shipped directly to clients, people can work with Dr. Molda from the comfort of their own home. This episode is all about looking deeper, finding root causes, and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal.
