The evenings become colder and the air which is already too dry for my liking gets even drier. This means my skin cracks more, it hurts every day, and my expenditure on moisturiser goes up.

    Ep010 | Confusion about quarantine and isolation

    Show notes at https://garydlum.co/5fb71 Quarantine is when you may have been exposed to a contagion (a disease spread by close contact) and you need to be sequestered to avoid spreading the contagion to others. Quarantine is a precautionary measure because while exposure or even the possibility of exposure doesn't mean you have been infected. It's a safety measure to avoid spreading an infection to others, especially vulnerable others who may have never been exposed to the contagion. Isolation is when you are known to have a communicable infectious disease and the aim is to stop you from spreading the infection to others by isolating you away from others. This shouldn't be confused with reverse isolation when you want to protect a vulnerable patient from being infected by others. One of the greatest tragedies that can beset a patient in reverse isolation in a positive pressure room is to have someone (usually through ignorance) switch the pressure to negative pressure. This is why swinging rooms are a BAD idea. Swinging rooms may save money, but after a fatal mistake, the cost can be astronomical.

    Ep008 | Defending Honour

    The Order of Australia Show notes at https://garydlum.co/61ef4 There’s been a lot written on social media and elsewhere this past week after Honours and Awards associated with the Order of Australia were announced on Sunday 26 January. One individual was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia and because of some controversial views expressed by that individual Twitter and other platforms went into a frenzy. I’m not going to pile on and comment, plenty of others have done that. It’s not uncommon for a controversial figure to be appointed a Member (AM), Officer (AO), Companion (AC), and even a Knight (AK) of the Order of Australia or to be awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). This time however, there were calls for the individual to be removed from the Order. In addition there was calls to scrap the entire Honours and Awards system. I get it when people object because they see the system as a form of class distinction, but the Order has in its ranks Australians from all backgrounds. I shan’t comment on the proportionality of appointments. I think there is a place in Australia for the Honours and Awards system and I guess I’m influenced because I’m a member.

    Ep001 | Island life

    I spent the last week working on Norfolk Island. I flew there on Monday via Sydney and returned to Canberra on Friday, again via Sydney. https://garydlum.co/20191222 I’ve never visited Norfolk Island before. I had heard from my parents that many of their friends had spent time on the island as tourists. Norfolk Island history I remember in school learning a little of the history of Norfolk Island. It had been inhabited by Polynesian people for a few hundred years and then abandoned. When Australia was settled and colonised by English convicts there were some convicts who were sent to Norfolk Island. This occurred in a couple of waves. In addition, some of the inhabitants of Pitcairn Island also sailed to Norfolk Island when the population of Pitcairn Island was getting too large to sustain. The island weather The weather on the island is almost perfect for me. It never gets above 28 °C and never gets below 6 °C. It’s on the same latitude as my hometown, Brisbane. Being a small island, moist sea air wafts across the island so it’s never dry. The people I met were all friendly and welcoming. Driving around the island is pretty straightforward. There aren’t too many roads. I don’t know about cycling though, apparently some locals can get close to 100 kilometres per hour cycling down the hills. The roads are good, but not suitable for a road bike at that speed.
