    23. The ethics of true crime (w/ Haley Toumaian, Co-Host of Inhuman)

In this episode, join me as I interview the queen of true crime TikTok, Haley Toumaian aka @RobandHaley!  Haley gained traction on TikTok during her coverage of the unsolved case of Gabby Petito and has since dedicated her platform to being a “voice for the voiceless.” Haley and I talk about her true crime “origin story,” the case that got her into true crime, and how her views of the genre have shifted since she became a content creator. Haley also discusses why she’s passionate about using social media as a tool to bring justice to unsolved cases.  We break down where the line is between education and entertainment and how you can ethically get involved with true crime. (CW: We don’t discuss any cases in explicit detail, but if you’re sensitive to true crime, missing person cases, and unsolved cases, I would recommend listening to other episodes of Hello Heroine instead.) Cases discussed in this episode: Kristin Smart Jon-Benet Ramsey Jayna Murray (The Lululemon Murder) Israel Keyes The Hillside Strangler Green River Killer Ted Bundy Annie’s Links: Instagram: @annielikeswordsblog and @helloheroinepod TikTok: @annieearnshaw13 Newsletter: annieearnshaw.substack.com Blog: annielikeswords.com Email: helloheroinepod@gmail.com Haley’s Links: TikTok: @robandhaley Podcast: Inhuman on Spotify and Apple Podcasts YouTube: Rob & Haley and Haley’s Crime Time Instagram: @robandhaley and @inhuman_podcast

In this episode, the lovely Mackenzie Newcomb of @BadBitchBookClub, @MackInStyle, and the Friends to Lovers Podcast joins me for a conversation about the appeal of talking about books online.  With the rise of the pandemic and a reason to stay home on a Friday night, readers old and new are turning to online book clubs, Bookstagram, and Booktok to discuss all things reading.  Mackenzie and I talk about why this shift is happening and how online reading communities have changed the way we read offline.
