IslandKind: Accessible Beaches in Jersey (Interview with Beth Gallichan)

Today we're joined by Beth Gallichan whose background includes working as a healthcare assistant supporting people with disabilities in residential care settings. Since then, she has spent more than 20 years working in fundraising, charity leadership and community development. Over the years, Beth has worked with a number of disability charities, including Headway Jersey and Autism Jersey. Today, through her consultancy work, she supports a range of charities and community organisations, including Enable Jersey, Wetwheels Jersey, Beresford Street Kitchen and others that work to improve opportunities and quality of life for people across Jersey's community. Alongside my consultancy work, Beth founded IslandKind, a social impact initiative inspired by a belief that Jersey is full of generosity, compassion and community spirit. Through her work with charities, Beth has seen both the incredible impact organisations create and the challenges they face when working in isolation or with limited resources. IslandKind aims to connect people, charities, businesses and community groups through stories, learning, collaboration and practical support, helping to strengthen the social and environmental wellbeing of the Island. Beth is also the voluntary Chair of BeachAbility, a small Jersey charity that provides access to specially designed beach wheelchairs, enabling residents and visitors with mobility challenges to enjoy Jersey's beaches. They recently hosted a collaborative event bringing together organisations including Jersey Cheshire Home, Wetwheels Jersey, Healing Waves, occupational therapists and care providers. They discussed the barriers people face in accessing the island's beaches and coastline, as well as opportunities for organisations to work together to improve inclusion and accessibility.
