Stop Beating Yourself Up God Already Did It

Let me know what you think of this episode? Identity talk is everywhere, but most of it still leaves people anxious, exhausted, and unsure of who they really are. We sit down with author Tom Anderson to get underneath the slogans and into the deeper question: what if identity is your default system, the background story running your life when nobody is watching? Tom shares a grace-filled approach to Christian identity rooted in sonship, not self-effort. We unpack the three soul needs every person carries: to be valued and loved, to be significant, and to feel safe. From Jude’s language of being loved, called, and kept, we explore what it looks like to let God’s view of you become more real than your inner critic, your past, or your performance. Along the way, Tom explains “kinship to sonship” and why the doing-driven version of faith can quietly burn people out. We also dig into big gospel themes with practical weight: Adam’s story and the four relationships that rupture in the fall, why “It is finished” means far more than forgiveness alone, and how confession can become a doorway into truth instead of a loop of shame. If you care about spiritual formation, grace, redemption, and healing your sense of self before God, this conversation gives language and next steps you can actually live. A Former Attorney Tests Christianity With Evidence

Let me know what you think of this episode? What happens when you stop treating the Bible as an inherited object and start treating it like evidence? Matthew Mcwhorter, a former attorney, joins us to walk through the most practical version of the biblical canon question we have heard: which Bible are we actually talking about when we say “the Bible,” and would a neutral judge trust the witnesses behind it? Matthew tells the story of starting as a skeptic who simply wanted to read the books he was named after, then discovering the sheer scale of the Protestant vs Catholic vs Orthodox Bible divide. From there, he builds a case-centered approach to canon formation that connects apologetics to the Deuterocanonical books (often called the Apocrypha) instead of keeping those debates in separate boxes. We dig into why figures like Irenaeus matter, how early church fathers are used in arguments about both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and why consistency matters if you want Christianity to be provable rather than just preferable. We also talk about Jewish scholarship on when the Jewish Bible (Tanakh) became fixed, how New Testament allusions can point back to disputed texts, and why reading multiple Bible translations can clarify meaning rather than create confusion. Matthew shares one of his most surprising finds involving Two Maccabees, the Talmud, and a martyrdom story that shows how messy the historical record can be when people argue from selective sources. If you care about historical Christianity, Bible canon, early church history, or the question of what counts as reliable evidence, this conversation gives you a clear framework and real sources to chase down. Check out Matthew at canoncrossfire.com and follow @CanonCrossfire, then subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review with your biggest canon question. From growing up on a working farm in rural Illinois, where hard work and responsibility were instilled from an early age, Jay went on to serve in the Marines in covert operations, only to face a series of near-death experiences that would have broken most people. With over 73 surgeries and counting, Jay shares how faith, stubbornness, and an unrelenting will to keep moving forward have carried him through decades of physical pain and recovery. He also discusses his book The Strength Within You, his mission through Never Quit Trying, and his current work in battlefield immersion training to help save soldiers’ and first responders’ lives. Throughout the conversation, Jay reflects on prayer, purpose, and why he believes it’s always too soon to quit. Surviving A Cyclone In Samoa And Finding Purpose with Ian Reilly

Let me know what you think of this episode? Two weeks after moving overseas for volunteer work, Ian Riley and his wife are hit by a massive cyclone that turns daily life into a test of survival: horizontal rain blowing through the house, roads washed out, no pumped water, no working banks, and a long recovery where reliable power can take months. We talk through what it feels like to teach and serve in the aftermath when the adrenaline fades and the real challenge becomes endurance, uncertainty, and the decision to stay when others leave. Ian also takes us inside the unique communication reality of Samoa in the early 1990s. With no internet, limited phones, and little local reporting, news becomes word of mouth and rumor. Yet the same community networks can be remarkably effective, with handwritten notes carried village to village and responses returning the next morning. That contrast sparks a bigger conversation about how we handle incomplete information, culture shock, and the mental strain of not knowing what happens next. From there, we follow the thread of how chaos can shape a life. Ian shares why he wrote Encounter: A Journey Into Chaos, Culture And Compassion in present tense, designed to pull you into the moment and let you decide what you would do. He connects lessons learned in crisis to later work as an engineer and entrepreneur, including building world-first virtual cattle fencing, raising capital, scaling a startup, and eventually selling the company. If you care about faith under pressure, resilience after disaster, cross cultural volunteering, and finding purpose in uncertainty, you’ll find a lot to sit with here. Emotional Maturity Grows When Faith Leads

Let me know what you think of this episode? Life can look stable on the outside and still feel like you are barely holding it together. We sit down with Dr. Tokelson, a clinical psychologist with more than four decades of experience, to talk about why so many of us feel emotionally overwhelmed and why we hide it behind a polished mask. We get honest about self-preservation, fear of rejection, and the quiet pressure to perform, even when we are running on empty.  From there, we connect emotional maturity to spiritual formation in a practical way. We explore how thoughts shape emotions, how identity impacts stress, and why biblical truth can restore context when life feels chaotic. Dr. Tokelson shares his own story, including pivotal moments that shaped his calling, the work that led to his book Awaken, and the conviction that lasting emotional health is not just willpower. It is daily formation, wise support, and a renewed understanding of worth that is not based on accomplishment.  We also dig into burnout and why it keeps coming back after therapy, self-help, or a spiritual high. Dr. Tokelson explains “regression to the mean,” defines burnout as exceeding capacity, and lists warning signs like sleep disruption, anxiety, irritability, and losing healthy routines. You will leave with a clear first step toward peace and resilience, plus encouragement that a fresh start is always possible. Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels stretched thin, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway. Walking Through The Wilderness Of Faith With Dustin Kleinschmidt

Let me know what you think of this episode? What if the place you’re trying to escape is the place God is using to form you? Pastor, author, and coach Dustin Kleinschmidt joins us to candidly unpack burnout, depression, leadership wounds, and the surprising joy that can surface when we stop treating life like a problem to solve. Dustin shares how stepping down from a crisis-ridden church didn’t end his pain—it exposed his expectations and led him into a deeper, steadier trust. Drawing from the Exodus story, he lays out the Wilderness Way: rescued from slavery, promised restoration, and shaped in the in‑between where beauty and brokenness live side by side. We talk through what wilderness can look like—grief that lingers, a diagnosis that upends plans, a child in chaos, or a church split that shatters trust—and why quick fixes often keep us stuck. Dustin describes the hard won practices that helped him rebuild: counseling, confession, letting pressure out early, and inviting his wife to be an advocate in the fight against secrecy and shame. He also explains his coaching model for leaders that integrates spiritual health, emotional resilience, relational honesty, and organizational clarity, because strategy without soul burns people out and feelings without structure stall change. If your faith feels frayed, you’ll find language, hope, and a path forward. Expect practical wisdom, not platitudes: how to worship honestly in pain, how to spot small daily joys without denying reality, and how to hold outcomes with open hands while trusting the God who stays. Grab Dustin’s book The Wilderness Way on Amazon, explore the companion workbook, and share this episode with someone who needs permission to be honest and keep going. If this conversation helped you, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with a friend who’s walking through their own wilderness. Your story might be the whisper someone needs today.
