Ole Miss vs the Story ESPN Told About It Last November | Edwin Joseph Homecoming? | Week 0 Lines

College GameDay is coming to Oxford on September 19, exactly like we said three months ago. A lot of you have been waiting nine months to say something — and there's a right way to do it.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🏈 The right version and the wrong version. That set on the Grove is the biggest platform this fanbase gets all year, and the currency has always been the signs, because the good ones travel — screenshotted and on every timeline in the sport by nine in the morning. Be clever, be funny, be specific, make the point in eight words. The best GameDay signs in history were never the angriest ones. They were the smartest ones. And the line: booing a take is fair, booing a network is fair, anything aimed at a person standing in front of you steps on your own point. You're not trying to win an argument with a television crew. You're trying to announce your side of the story to the rest of the country.   📉 And here's what nobody talks about from last November. While the coaching story ran every segment, every day, for weeks: Trinidad Chambliss wasn't promoted for the Heisman. Kewan Lacy wasn't promoted for the Doak Walker. Lucas Carneiro wasn't promoted for the Lou Groza. Nothing behind any of them. They finished very high anyway — and at least one likely could have won with any promotion at all. That team then beat Tulane, beat Georgia, and came 18 seconds from the national title game.   🛡️ Edwin Joseph is playing cornerback — and everybody's about to report it wrong. He came out of high school at corner, played corner as a Florida State freshman, moved to nickel, and only moved to safety when the scheme changed. His words: he's going back to his old roots. It's not an experiment. It's a homecoming. The case that he can start at all five DB spots — and every one is something he's actually played. Plus the mechanism behind Golding's compliment: Joseph played receiver, so he reads route combinations from the other side.   📊 And Week 0 lines are out. Not picks — the market as information. Florida State -30.5 is the biggest number on the board and tells you nothing. Dan Mullen's UNLV hosts Memphis with a 57.5 total, the highest number on the slate. And San Jose State at USC has no money line posted at all.   🆕 THE LOCKED ON OLE MISS HITS CHANNEL IS LIVE — 5-minute-or-less Ole Miss takes, every day. ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — everything Locked On in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. Is Pete Golding Overselling This Ole Miss Defense? I Have to Ask. | Law & Order College Sports Unit

I've spent two shows this week building on what Pete Golding said about his defense. Today I want to ask the uncomfortable question about it.   Steven Willis is joined by Tom Vanderford, the Mayor of Corinth, for the last questions of fall camp. IN THIS EPISODE: 🤔 How couched is Pete Golding? He said Edwin Joseph reminds him of somebody he coached before and wouldn't say the name — and he was at Alabama, so everybody had fun with that Google search. He said Keaton Thomas is better than some of the linebackers he had there. If both are true, this defense is going to be amazing. But does he mean it, or is he in a position where he might be overexaggerating? I'm not saying he's lying — a head coach in August has every incentive to talk up his roster, and that's the job. But there's a difference between precise and generous, and I don't know yet which one he is. Tom's answer is the fair one: the truth gets told in the next few months, and what the transfers actually did at their old schools isn't a quote — it's film.   💰 70/30, and what it bought. Tom's heard the 2025 transfer class was roughly 70% offense, 30% defense — and this year it's about half and half. That's the cleanest explanation of the whole offseason. Ole Miss shopped the bargain bin at defensive back and Miami found the ceiling in the semifinal. Now it's Edwin Joseph (Florida State), Joenel Aguero (Georgia), Jay Crawford (Auburn), Sharif Denson (Florida). Ole Miss could always get these guys. They just weren't paying for them.   🛡️ And Joseph has been playing cornerback. He said so at his press conference Friday — and it tells you exactly where this is going. If your safeties can cover like corners, you don't have to protect them, and you can turn the front seven loose.   🧱 Plus the right tackle answer. Tom's hearing Kinsler has moved forward, with Curne still in it — the light bulb may not have come on, but it's starting to flicker. And nobody's talking about Troy Everett, who played center at Oklahoma... where they just lost their center in practice.   Also: why the drop-off on this roster is after 50 instead of after 22, and what the tight end room actually looks like.   🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com   🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com   💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC   Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. "It's Ole Miss." Roman Harper Said the Quiet Part on National TV | SEC Surprises?

Chase Daniel was making the case for Trinidad Chambliss and a national title. Roman Harper interrupted him: "Ole Miss isn't winning a title. It's Ole Miss."   That's the argument. Not the roster. The logo.   Steven Willis is joined by Bossman of Biscuits and SEC for the view of Ole Miss from outside Oxford.   IN THIS EPISODE: 😤 Brand bias, and the receipt for it. Ole Miss has the best quarterback in the country, the best running back in the country and the best kicker in the country. They beat Georgia in the Playoff last season with most of these same players. They're ranked 9th. And when I said on the SEC Squad that Ole Miss could win a national championship, that room looked at me like I had four heads. Bossman remembered the same SEC Network segment — and says media outside Oxford is overlooking this team, with the framing basically being Lane's gone, so it's back to the old Ole Miss. It isn't just us: Vanderbilt went 10-2 last year with two road losses to top-10 teams and missed the Playoff entirely.   🔫 "The monkey's got the gun." Bossman's line, and it's the best framing of Pete Golding anybody has given. Under Kiffin, Ole Miss couldn't spend on defense — that secondary was the bargain bin, and Miami took advantage of it in the semifinal. But Golding is the man who elevated those players into a unit that reached the cusp of a national title. Now he has the money, the control and a full year: Edwin Joseph (Florida State), Jay Crawford (Auburn), Sharif Denson (Florida), Joenel Aguero (Georgia) — four Power 4 starters in one secondary. And Bryan Brown, asked this week whether this defense can match the 2024 unit: they have work to do, but the potential is there — and they're definitely deeper.   📺 GameDay is coming to Oxford for LSU. Exactly what that game needed. And Bossman's read: Ole Miss fans may not be thrilled to see that crew, given how ESPN handled the Kiffin situation.   ⚖️ And Greg Sankey drew the line. Per Bossman, the commissioner told schools professional athletes will not be allowed to play in the SEC — and sent something to LSU about a pro basketball player their coach was pursuing. Somebody finally stood up.   Plus Bossman's Louisville prediction, his SEC title game picks, and the two teams he thinks jump up and get somebody this year.   🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com   🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com   💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC   🎧 Follow Bossman at Biscuits and SEC — plus their new show, Extra Biscuits, and Biscuits and SEC Live on Wednesdays.   Locked On Ole Miss is your daily Ole Miss Rebels podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network. "An Eraser." The Ole Miss Linebacker Nobody Was Talking About. | OU Crossover

Pete Golding called Keaton Thomas the best linebacker he can remember coaching. Golding was the defensive coordinator at Alabama. Read that sentence twice.   Steven Willis joins Jay Smith of Locked On Sooners for a Locked On College Crossover ahead of Ole Miss–Oklahoma in Norman.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🛡️ "An eraser." That's Golding's word for Thomas — a second-level player who makes mistakes disappear. Ole Miss hasn't had one in years; Chris Paul in 2024 is the last comparison. And Thomas is now five separate sources in ten days: Pick Six, Brett Ciancia, Harry Harrison out of the press box, Bryan Brown calling him a bell cow, and now the head coach. Plus the rumor inside the building: they think this defense can be 2024-level elite — the year Ole Miss led the nation in rush defense at 85.1 yards a game.   📋 Six of ten came back. Every national show ran the story about who followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge. Nobody ran this number: Ole Miss returned six of its ten assistants, the entire defensive staff, and both the offensive line coach and the quarterbacks coach — the two most important strategic pieces on offense that aren't a coordinator. And John David Baker is more Jeff Lebby than Charlie Weis Jr., was here from 2021-23 before Weis arrived, and took East Carolina from statistically the worst offense in college football to a top-15 unit. He's also the reason Jaxson Dart came to Ole Miss — and without those three years, there's probably no Trinidad Chambliss here at all.   ♟️ The Troy Everett chess match. A former Oklahoma center is on this roster. Ole Miss goes to Norman in November. And there's genuine respect for the Venables defense all over that building. Last year Kiffin beat Oklahoma by inverting his entire offense in the rain — slowing down, waiting for the clock to stop, specifically to get the headset off. That won't work twice. So what's next?   🤝 And the honest part. Jay Smith picked Oklahoma. Ole Miss is 3-0 in this series against one of the proudest programs in the sport, and eventually the law of averages catches you. Plus: it apparently rains every single time Ole Miss goes to Norman.   Also: why Suntarine Perkins gets overlooked, what his nickname actually is, and the Chucky Mullins Award.   🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com 🏠 THE OLE MISS HUB — every Locked On video, articles, the Discord and the Everyday Club in one place: olemisshub.com 💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC 🎧 Follow Jay Smith at Locked On Sooners. 🏈 NCAA Eligibility Ruling: Two of These Guys Are in NFL Camp RIGHT NOW | Where Ole Miss Goes From HERE

Two of these guys are in an NFL training camp right now — and they just went to court to get themselves a college backup plan.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🚨 What actually happened. Thirty-three athletes sued the NCAA in a Louisiana state court and were granted a temporary restraining order the same day. Three are former Ole Miss starters: Dae'Quan Wright (under contract, Cleveland), Zxavian Harris (waived by New Orleans), and Wydett Williams Jr. (under contract, Arizona). Two of those men are currently employed by NFL teams. That's not a transfer. That's not an eligibility appeal. That's a hedge. (Caveat: a restraining order is temporary, and an NFL club would have to release them first.)   💰 Why somebody will make the call. Lose and you can lose your job. Win and you get celebrated. That gap is monstrous, and there's too much money on the table. But sign one of these transfers this close to the season and you're telling your own building you don't believe in the roster you built — and telling the kid who's been there three years and just won that job that it was never actually his.   ⚖️ The part that matters most: a federal judge already drew this line. Judge Charlotte Sweeney's nationwide injunction is why Judd Utermark and Will Furniss are back on this roster. But Sweeney clarified her own order and specifically excluded athletes who signed professional contracts — because that's how it's always worked. When you leave early, they call it foregoing your senior year. Which is exactly why these NFL guys had to find a different courtroom in Louisiana.   🏈 And why there's no phone call to make in Oxford. Wright, Harris and Williams were real players — 39 catches and 635 yards, 15 starts and 9 TFL, 73 tackles and 3 interceptions. And Ole Miss already replaced every one of them.   Plus why Chambliss was the last rightful lawsuit in this sport, the Texas Tech video, and the one thing this staff has done all August that suddenly makes a lot more sense.   🚨 THE EVERYDAY CLUB IS NOW ONE TIER — $8/MONTH, EVERYBODY GETS EVERYTHING. Golding Says This Ole Miss DB Reminds Him of an Alabama Player | Rebels preparing for Louisville

Michael Borkey asked Pete Golding a question I've never heard anybody ask a coach — and Golding gave a name. Which is unheard of in modern college athletics.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🎯 "Is there a player you HAVEN'T been asked about that we should be asking about?" Golding said yes, a couple of guys are going to be elite — and then named Edwin Joseph. As good as any defensive back he's been around in a long time. Versatility, very quick twitch, a knack for the football. And then he said Joseph reminds him of somebody he's coached before — and wouldn't say the name. Golding was Alabama's defensive coordinator. I'm not putting a name in his mouth he didn't say himself.   📌 Four months, and nobody else. We've had Joseph in the argument on this show since Ole Miss bought four Power 4 starters for that secondary — the spending segment, the NFL draft segment, the Pick Six segment. He hasn't been a national story and he's barely been a local one. Nobody asked Golding about him; Golding said so himself. When a coach volunteers a name nobody asked for, that's the least filtered thing he says all week.   🏈 Why it matters: Miami was better on the line of scrimmage partly because Ole Miss was protecting the back end. But the thing that actually decided that game was a coverage bust and a missed tackle in the secondary. Pick Six has Ole Miss defensive backs 7th in the SEC — the only unit outside its own league's top five. The head coach just pointed at the answer.   📋 19 drives, and "most games are lost, not won." Across every one of them, every explosive play on offense and every negative play on defense came from a bust or a mental error — not a contested rep. Stack that with Bryan Brown saying the scrimmage was in the stadium with no coaches on the field, and you have two coaches describing the same finding from two chairs.   🗓️ And the detail nobody caught: they're scrimmaging on Sundays — because the first game is on a Sunday. This staff is resetting the entire rhythm of a game week in the middle of August. Golding Says This Ole Miss DB Reminds Him of an Alabama Player | Rebels preparing for Louisville

A Florida State Insider on Why Edwin Joseph Fits Ole Miss Better | Baylor vs Brentwood Aca Preview

Pete Golding named Edwin Joseph on Tuesday as the player nobody's asking about. Today I got to ask the one man in America who has actually watched him play. Steven Willis is joined by Brian Smith of Locked On The Portal — who also operates Locked On Seminoles, and covered Edwin Joseph at Florida State.   IN THIS EPISODE: 🎯 The scouting report. Joseph came out of Chaminade Madonna in South Florida — a program that wins state titles almost every year, and where Jeremiah Smith played. A four-star on the 247 composite, recruited by Auburn, Louisville, Penn State and straight down the list. Nobody was sure whether he'd end up at receiver, corner or safety, because he's just a really good athlete. Brian's read: single high, in the box, at nickel — he can run. And he's physical; contact doesn't bother him.   🧩 Why he might be better here. Florida State completely changed its defense last season under Tony White, and that scheme is zone-heavy and built to confuse — the safety lines up somewhere different against identical personnel, and the whole goal is making the quarterback throw it to the wrong team. It's a lot of information, and Brian's honest take is that it produced four or five great plays and then a coverage bust. His framing on the switch: like being an IndyCar driver and trying a different kind of racing. His advice on Joseph: don't cloud him too much.   🛡️ Joseph and Aguero together. They're similar players who'll both be free safeties at different times — put them on the field together and you disguise everything while keeping it simple, because nobody knows which one is the free safety. Brian's read on what that says about Golding's plan: stuff the run first, then create havoc in the backfield. Because you're going to give up explosive plays no matter what, so you'd better create some of your own.   📉 Is Ole Miss the drop-off team? Somebody on Brian's show said yes. He disagrees — he's got Ole Miss 9-3, in the Playoff or just outside. And here's the one factor that actually predicts a top-10 collapse: an overhyped quarterback. That's not Trinidad.   Plus two future Ole Miss quarterbacks facing each other in a high school game on ESPN2, and why practice in Oxford is locked down tighter than it ever was under Kiffin.   🚨 THE OLE MISS HUB IS LIVE MONDAY — the show, Locked On Ole Miss Hits, the Everyday Club, the private Discord, the newsletter free at noon and daily links every morning: olemisshub.com   ⭐ THE EVERYDAY CLUB — ad-free, members-only Discord, 7-day free trial: https://lockedonolemiss.supercast.com   💬 FREE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/KF3dtcQJhC   🎧 Follow Brian Smith at Locked On The Portal and Locked On Seminoles.
