    Sacrifice Isn't Dead [Romans 12:1-2 + Galatians 6:4-10]

    Nobody misses animal sacrifice. Two lambs a day, every day — one at dawn, one at dusk — raised by hand and given to fire. Gruesome, costly, and deeply personal. We're relieved that era is behind us. But Romans 12 suggests God hasn't stopped asking for sacrifice. He's just changed the form: "Give your bodies to God as a living and holy sacrifice." The message this week flips the Old Testament pattern. Animal sacrifice was a physical act with spiritual outcomes. The living sacrifice God asks for now is the opposite — a spiritual act with physical outcomes. And the most tangible expression of that? Money. Money flows through our lives the way blood flows through a body: without enough, we starve; with plenty, we flourish. Offering it to God is as personal and costly as anything the ancient Israelites brought to the altar. Galatians 6 makes the harvest logic clear: what you plant determines what grows. Living to satisfy yourself produces decay; living to please the Spirit produces eternal life. First Timothy 6 closes the loop — those who use their money to do good aren't just being generous, they're building a foundation for true life, the kind Jesus said he came to bring in full. Bottomline: When we offer our money as a living sacrifice, it heals our hearts, invests in infinity, and provides for the practically and spiritually poor

    Grate vs Evil [Ephesians 2:18-20]

    Paul and Silas had done something good — freed a slave girl from a spirit that was exploiting her — and ended up beaten, chained, and locked in a dungeon. Around midnight, instead of bitterness or despair, they were praying and singing with gratitude. The message this week makes a striking claim: gratitude is not a feeling to wait for — it's a practice to choose. Evil is real, and it shows up in ordinary life: a relationship fracturing, a body failing, a day grinding you down. The question isn't whether hard things happen. It's what you do with them. Paul and Silas didn't wait until things got better to worship. They worshipped first — and the worship changed everything, including the jailer who witnessed it. Philippians 4 promises that prayer with thanksgiving produces a peace that doesn't make logical sense. Second Corinthians 4 reframes suffering entirely — present troubles are light and momentary compared to the eternal weight of glory they're producing. Ephesians 5 frames gratefulness not as an emotion but as an act of being filled with the Spirit. The shift the message invites isn't from feeling bad to feeling good — it's from being overwhelmed by evil to being overwhelmed by gratefulness. Bottomline: Gratefulness is the practice of being aware of the air around you and feeling the breeze – it inspires you to breathe the breath of God into your lungs

    Neighbours Facing Homelessness [Deuteronomy 15:10–11]

    Kim, who works at Hope Central in downtown Mission serving hot meals and supporting people experiencing poverty and homelessness, brought a challenging and personal message: caring for the poor isn't primarily about programs — it's about relationship. Scripture is consistent on this. Deuteronomy commands open-handed generosity toward the poor, and the early church's radical sharing of life and resources reflects the same heart. But scripture meets reality in messy ways. Kim told the story of Jackie — a woman in poverty with serious mental health struggles and a history of violence — and her own fear and reluctance in caring for her. It's one thing to affirm "love the poor" in principle; it's another to sit with someone who is genuinely hard to love. What changed things for Jackie wasn't a program. It was being invited into a prayer group and finding real acceptance. Kim connected this to research: the "rat park" study, where rats given social connection and enrichment didn't become addicted the way isolated rats did, and Vancouver's Housing First studies, which found that providing stable housing — with no prerequisites — dramatically improved people's lives. The pattern echoes scripture: people don't heal in isolation. They heal in community. The practical invitation is small and doable: learn someone's name. Say hello. Listen with curiosity instead of trying to fix or solve. Community isn't a bureaucratic system — it's personal care, one relationship at a time.

    Neighbours Battling Addiction [Romans 2:4]

    This message challenges us to reflect God's goodness through practical neighborliness, reminding us that just as "the goodness of God leads you to repentance" (Romans 2:4), our kindness can draw others toward Him. The speaker encourages us to show authentic interest in people's lives, offer a simple smile to those who feel invisible, and remember that we are "ambassadors for Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:20) called to represent Him well. Ultimately, Jesus said the world will know we are His disciples by the way we love one another (John 13:35)—and that unconditional love becomes a powerful light that opens doors for the Gospel.

    Youth Neighbours [Isaiah 58:6–7 and Matthew 25:34–40]

    In Mission and the Fraser Valley, many vulnerable young people — facing homelessness, addiction, mental health struggles, and aging out of the foster system — actually choose to sleep on the streets rather than in shelters with adults. The need for a safe, youth-specific space is real and urgent. MY House was born when a local team took an abandoned building and turned it into exactly that: a nurturing home. Open since September 2015, it serves young people aged 14–24, welcoming 10 to 28 visitors every single day. It's not just a drop-in — it's a place where youth build life skills, pursue employment, practice relationship skills, and access peer support for recovery. At its heart is a simple but powerful idea: every young person needs at least one trusted adult in their corner. The invitation to love our neighbours is straightforward — show up. Whether supporting Mission Youth House through cooking a meal, doing yard work, giving monthly, or simply spreading awareness, or showing up personally in the life of a youth who is struggling, there are real, tangible ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the youth in your neighbourhood.

    Why and How Do I Tell Others? (Matthew 5:13-16)

    Most of us find it easier to share good news than almost anything else — a new baby, a great restaurant, a film we loved. And yet when it comes to the most significant thing in our lives, faith, many of us go quiet. We worry about coming across as pushy, weird, or naive. We tell ourselves that faith is private, or that living a good life is witness enough. Every person who follows Jesus today does so because someone, at some point, told them. If the first Christians had kept it to themselves, the story would have ended there. And the things Jesus offers — peace, forgiveness, meaning, life in all its fullness (John 10:10) — are too good to keep to ourselves. Like finding water in a desert, it would be strange not to tell the people around us. The good news is that you tell other by lliving with presence and integrity in the world, gentle persuasion rather than pressure, sharing your personal story, and praying consistently for the people in your life. None of these require you to have all the answers. The simplest and most powerful thing you can offer is: "This is what God has done for me." We can't change people's hearts – only God can. Our job is to be faithful, to stay in relationship, to keep praying. And we never know what the Holy Spirit is quietly doing in someone's life, even when we can't see it.

    How Can I Be Filled with the Holy Spirit? (Ephesians 5:18 + Luke 11:9-13)

    At the heart of the Christian faith is love — and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that love and makes it real in our lives. The deepest human need isn't achievement or comfort; it's to be truly loved, seen, and wanted. Through the Holy Spirit, God doesn't just tell us he loves us — he pours that love directly into our hearts. Ephesians 5:18 tells us to "go on being filled" with the Holy Spirit — the original Greek is present continuous, meaning this isn't a one-time event but an ongoing reality. It's possible to be a Christian and not be filled: like a pilot light that's always on, but the gas hasn't yet come on fully. The question is whether we're willing to open up and let God turn up the flame. In the book of Acts, people come to the Holy Spirit from five very different starting points — longing, openness, hostility, ignorance, and unlikely spiritual background. None of these disqualify someone. Whether you've been a follower of Jesus for decades or walked in deeply skeptical, the Spirit is available. The physical signs — wind, fire, deep breaths, tears — may or may not happen, and they're not what matters most. What matters is what happens in the heart: an experience of being loved by God that changes everything. The invitation is simple and ancient: Come, Holy Spirit. When we're consistently filled, that love doesn't stay locked inside — it overflows into every friendship, relationship, and corner of our lives.
