I am an independent photographer focused on documentary and environmental images. Based in Michigan, I have over 20 years of experience making photographs with digital and analog media. I am a former urban planner and current conservation nonprofit director, and I understand the power of images and art on community.     This episode is something new. I’m calling it straight out of camera because it’s essentially whatever comes to my mind, with hardly an edit in sight. This is the real me. This episode I talk about a wide variety of topics in a short amount of time (well, a relatively short amount of time for me anyway). Please let me know what you think!     This interview has been a long time coming. I am proud to speak with my friend Tayler Chaparelle, an EMT based in South Carolina. Tayler's incredible story resonated with me the first time she bravely emailed me months and months ago. After a bout with PTSD, Tayler struggled with depression and found her way out with her camera. Now, she is on the verge of owning her first Leica, a Leica Q2.     Embracing Failure, Using Constant LED Lighting, APO Vs ASPH

    This episode is all about virtual contact sheets in Lightroom and the fact that what we are seeing when we scroll through there are mostly the thousands of images that did not make the cut!     My Brief, Tragic Time As A Leica M10 Photographer

    We all have limitations as photographers, and in this episode I explore my own. With vision impairment resulting from an accident many years ago, I struggle with maintaining binocular vision and struggle with double vision when I don’t wear my coke bottle glasses. I am also a left eye dominant shooter. These two issues conspired to make it nearly impossible to shoot an analog rangefinder, as I found out after acquiring my dream camera, the Leica M10-D.     Working Class Cameras: Getting A Leica In The Hands Of Photographers That Would Cherish Them Most

    I believe that Leica cameras do not cost a lot of money...they are WORTH a lot of money. That said, many people that would change the world with a Leica in their hands can’t get there financially. This episode explores my dream of building a community to create a resource to help them achieve their dreams. Can we come together and prove that Leica cameras are not just luxury ornaments for the rich? That Leica cameras are valuable, durable, incredible tools that have a heritage of changing the world for the better? I believe we can. Inspired by a listener that wrote me about her own battles with depression, her intense career as an EMT, and her photographic journey that saved her life, this idea may take years to put in place but would be worth it in the end.     Inspiration From Others, Metering For High Contrast, Leica M10 Monochrom

    This week we explore the concept of using the work of others as a starting point in our own development as creators. In particular, we will discuss the work of Alan Schaller and Sean Tucker, especially as they are well-suited to the transition into the second segment, which will cover how meter for highlight and use old fashioned techniques to get that very high contrast look, especially in black and white photography. Finally, I’ll ramble on about the object of my obsession, the Leica M10 Monochrom, the perfect tool to execute the type of photography that is the theme of this episode.
