    Betrayed by the Myth of Balance

    This message confronts a truth many of us live with daily: we're exhausted. Not just physically tired, but emotionally, spiritually, and relationally drained. The culprit? We've been betrayed by the myth of balance. We've structured our lives like pie charts, dividing ourselves into compartments for work, family, exercise, finances, friendships, hobbies, mental health, diet, rest, and religion. We believe health means keeping all these pieces in perfect equilibrium, serving ten different bosses simultaneously. But here's the soul-crushing reality: when we invest more in one area, another inevitably shrinks. More time at the gym means less time with family. Extra work hours to pay off debt means fewer moments with friends or at church. This pursuit of balance becomes a never-ending cycle where one boss is always disappointed, one area always neglected. We lay our heads on pillows at night, cataloging our failures rather than celebrating the gift of another day. Jesus offers something radically different. His words don't call us to balance but to allegiance. Seek first the kingdom. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow. Jesus lived with beautiful simplicity, asking one question each morning: 'Father, what do you have for me to do today?' What if our rest isn't found in perfectly balanced lives but in undivided hearts devoted to one Father, one purpose, one King?

    Rest for the Weary

    In Matthew 11:25-30, we encounter one of Scripture's most tender invitations: Jesus calling the weary to find rest in Him. This passage emerges against a backdrop of religious burden and broad rejection, where the religious leaders had layered God's law with human traditions until it became unbearable. Yet in this context, we discover three profound truths. First, we see the Father's sovereign grace—God revealing kingdom mysteries not to the self-sufficient and proud, but to humble 'little children' who recognize their need. Second, we witness Jesus asserting His unique authority as the Son who perfectly knows and reveals the Father. And third, we receive an invitation that still echoes today: 'Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' This isn't rest from responsibility, but rest found in being yoked with Christ—sharing our burdens with Him as He guides our steps. The imagery of the yoke is beautiful: two oxen joined together, moving in the same direction, sharing the weight. Alone, the load is crushing; together with Jesus, it becomes bearable. What makes this invitation remarkable is Jesus' self-description—He doesn't cite His power or authority, but says 'I am gentle and lowly in heart.' Only in Christianity do we find a God who identifies with human weakness, who emptied Himself to give us everything. The question we must ask ourselves is: What burden are we carrying that we were never meant to bear alone?

    The Kingdom Belongs to the Kids

    Our second teaching on the spiritual practice of rest explores how Jesus’ words and actions are constantly “echoing” the Old Testament story—and how that changes the way we read our Bibles. Looking at Mark 10:13–16, we see Jesus welcome and bless the children, declaring that the kingdom belongs to such as these. From there, we trace the echoes back to Genesis 48 and Jacob’s crossed‑arm blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh, a powerful picture of undeserved adoption, unearned inheritance, and freely shared kingdom grace. Brock concludes with a reflection on an 1805 painting of Jesus with children, using its imagery to show what true Christian rest looks like: childlike trust, heads laid on the Savior’s chest, embraced by the cross.

    Intimacy Over Authority

    This introduction on the spiritual discipline of rest challenges us to rethink our understanding of spiritual effectiveness by examining a fascinating contrast in Mark 9. We encounter two groups of disciples: those who ascended the mountain with Jesus to pray, and those who remained below to continue ministry work. When the latter group failed to cast out a demon despite having been given authority and power, they asked the pivotal question: 'Why could we not cast it out?' Jesus' answer reveals a profound truth that reshapes how we approach kingdom work: 'This kind can only be cast out by prayer.' The message introduces us to two transformative concepts: rest as a compound discipline, something we practice in order to practice other spiritual disciplines like prayer and fasting, and rest as a condition of the heart, not merely a behavior we toggle on and off. We learn that what powers productivity in God's kingdom is not our authority, talents, or passions, but our intimacy with Him. The disciples had confused their commission with their capacity, their giftedness with godliness. Like them, we often carry the keys to the car but mistakenly believe we are the engine. This teaching invites us to withdraw from the constant pressures and distractions of our world, particularly those coming through our devices, to create space for abiding with our Father. The challenge is clear: we cannot pour from an empty cup, and true spiritual effectiveness flows not from our striving but from our resting in God's perfect power.

    I Watched Him Bleed

    This powerful message invites us to experience familiar biblical stories through fresh eyes—specifically, through the perspective of Timothy as he witnessed the Apostle Paul's ministry. Drawing from 2 Timothy 3:10-11 and the book of Acts, we're challenged to consider what makes someone worth following in our faith journey. The sermon walks us through four transformative lessons Timothy learned: he watched Paul bleed after being stoned in Lystra, he heard him sing worship songs in a Philippian prison, he received encouragement through Paul's letters, and he learned profound humility from a man who considered himself the chief of sinners. What emerges is a portrait of authentic discipleship—not sanitized or heroic, but raw, vulnerable, and deeply committed. We're reminded that true spiritual authority comes not from perfection but from faithfulness in suffering, worship in adversity, generous encouragement of others, and genuine humility about our own weaknesses. The sermon culminates in Philippians 4:9, where Paul urges us to practice what we've learned, received, heard, and seen. This isn't about imitating superhuman saints; it's about embodying obedience over comfort, worship over worry, encouragement over despair, and humility over ego in our everyday lives.

    A Wandering Mind

    Modern psychology has discovered that our minds naturally wander, and that most often a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. Unfortunately, our minds often drift toward unhealthy places—the past, the future, our desires, relationships, and fears. Left unchecked, these patterns produce shame, anxiety, insecurity, selfishness, and despair. Long before neuroscience, Scripture recognized this reality. Rather than allowing our thoughts to drift aimlessly, the New Testament repeatedly commands believers to "set your minds on” holy things in an effort to combat mental drift. When our minds drift: To the past, we set them on Jesus,  To the future, we set them on the things above, To our desires, we set them on the Spirit, To our relationships, we set them on God, To our fears, we set them on things that are praiseworthy. The Christian life is not passive surrender to intrusive thoughts but active participation with the Holy Spirit. By God's grace, believers possess both responsibility and authority over what occupies their minds. A wandering mind becomes unhappy because it wanders into darkness. But a mind fixed on Christ becomes filled with life and peace.

    A Biblical Approach to Anxiety

    This powerful message confronts one of the most universal struggles we face: anxiety. Drawing from Philippians 4:6-7, we're reminded that anxiety isn't just a modern phenomenon—it's a timeless human condition that even the early church grappled with. The Philippian believers faced persecution, uncertainty about their spiritual father Paul's imprisonment, and internal church conflicts. Sound familiar? We too live with financial pressures, relational tensions, and an uncertain future. Yet Paul's instruction is clear: 'Do not be anxious about anything.' This isn't toxic positivity or denial of real struggles. Instead, it's an invitation to a different way of living. We're called to replace worry with prayer, to transform every concern into a conversation with our Heavenly Father. The distinction between planning for tomorrow and worrying about tomorrow is crucial—one is wise stewardship, the other is faithless obsession. When we bring our specific requests to God with thanksgiving, something supernatural happens: the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guards our hearts and minds. This isn't peace dependent on circumstances changing; it's peace rooted in who God is. If He gave us His Son, what will He withhold from us? Every moment of anxiety is actually an invitation to prayer, an opportunity to deepen our intimacy with the Father who already knows what we need and loves us beyond measure.

    Rejoice

    What does it mean to truly rejoice when life feels overwhelming? This powerful exploration of Philippians 4:4-9 challenges us to move beyond empty platitudes and discover a joy that transcends our circumstances. The passage invites us into a profound truth: we are called to rejoice in the Lord always—not in our situations, possessions, or comfort, but specifically in who God is and who we are in Him. This isn't about toxic positivity or pretending everything is fine. Instead, it's about anchoring our identity in God's unchanging character and our unshakeable position as His beloved children. When we consider God's attributes—His sovereignty, mercy, compassion, and eternal nature—combined with our adoption as sons and daughters, we discover a sustainable joy that the world cannot give and cannot take away. The challenge before us is profound: are we trying to straddle the wall between the kingdom and the world, one foot in the flesh and one in the Spirit? This divided allegiance leaves us too worldly to enjoy God and too godly to enjoy the world, resulting in lukewarmness and despair. The invitation is clear: jump fully into the kingdom, where peace, love, and authentic joy await on the other side. There truly is a joy beyond the walls of this world, and it's found in surrendering completely to who God is and embracing fully who we are in Him.
