    When God Seems Silent

    Some mornings, the hardest prayer to say is the simplest one: “Lord, how long?” When the world feels loud with violence, unfairness, and nonstop bad news, God can seem strangely quiet. I walk through Habakkuk, one of the most honest books in the Bible, where a frustrated prophet brings his questions straight to God and refuses to settle for shallow answers. We look at what Habakkuk actually complains about, what God says back, and why the answer is both surprising and steadying. God reminds him to “look at the nations” and trust that He is at work even when it is not obvious. That leads to Habakkuk’s powerful prayer in chapter three, a reminder that awe and need can live in the same sentence: “Help us again… and in your anger remember your mercy.” Then we bring it home with a clear, practical anchor for daily life: “the righteous will live by trusting in Him.” When we feel piled on by one problem after another, we have to decide where we look for help.     Listening To Truth Is Not The Same As Living It

    Knowing the Bible isn’t the same as obeying it, and that gap might be the biggest threat to our faith right now. Today I’m sharing a five-minute challenge that cuts through spiritual noise: Christian life is action. Not speculation. Not debating. Doing. A quote from Frederick Robertson sets the tone, reminding us that feelings pass, opinions change, and even strong resolves can fade, but what we actually do leaves a lasting mark in us and in the people around us. From there, I get honest about a problem many of us face without realizing it: we’re educated beyond our level of obedience. We’ve heard the sermons, read the devotionals, and learned the language, yet we hesitate to live it out when it costs us comfort or reputation. As the culture in Canada and the United States shifts further from Christian foundations and Scripture is mocked or dismissed, pulling back can feel safer. But retreat doesn’t heal anything. Faith under pressure needs clarity, courage, and visible love. James 1:22-25 brings it home with a direct command: “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” I also share a story (via Stephen Mansfield) from an African bishop who draws a sharp line between studying God and worshiping God and how worship-driven obedience creates a culture that changes communities.     Steps That Break A Democracy

    A listener forwarded me a short piece called “Opinion from a Judge,” and it grabbed my attention for one simple reason: it sounded like the kind of story that spreads fast whether it’s true or not. So I did what I wish all of us would do more often in our media-saturated world, I checked it. Snopes affirmed the account, and what came next was both fascinating and unsettling. The story centers on Judge Keith Albert, who remembers a page from a 1954 political science textbook describing steps intended to overturn a democracy. We walk through that list and talk about why themes like division, distrust, civil unrest, weakening institutions, and media control matter to everyday people, not just political commentators. Albert’s own reaction is a key part of the conversation too: after dedicating his life to the justice system, he says what he once thought could never happen began to feel alarmingly real, while still insisting he isn’t trying to play politics. From there, I pivot to a deeper lens: Isaiah 5:20-21 and the warning about calling evil good and good evil. When the world feels upside down, faith is not denial, it’s grounding. We can stay aware of what’s happening around us while choosing peace, wisdom, and hope in Christ, trusting that God is present and steady even when culture is not.     What the World Needs Right Now

    Love is one of the most overused words in our culture and one of the least practiced when things get tense. Today we start with a surprising connection: a 1965 hit written at the height of the Vietnam War, “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” and the reason that message still feels urgent when fear and anger are everywhere. We ask the real, practical question: what does love look like when you are dealing with people who are struggling, difficult, or different from you. I walk through Jesus’ answer in Mark 12:30–31, where loving God with everything we have is inseparable from loving our neighbor as ourselves. “Neighbor” is not a concept, it is the person in front of you, and the bridge to loving them is compassion and empathy. Without those, we cannot even begin. Then I share a story from Dale Galloway that lands like a gut punch and forces a moment of honesty about what embarrassment and image can do to our hearts.     God’s Names For Hard Mornings

    Some mornings don’t need more noise, they need one clear truth you can carry. Today we build that truth around a worship classic that’s helped me more times than I can count: Vicky Yohe’s “Because of Who You Are.” It’s a five-minute start to your day, but it’s also a small, steady reminder that God hasn’t changed, and His names still speak. We slow down and unpack three powerful Old Testament names of God the song points to: Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Nisi, and Jehovah Shalom. You’ll hear what each name means, where it shows up in Scripture, and why it matters beyond the page. Jehovah Jireh takes us to Genesis 22 and the God who provides. Jehovah Nisi leads us to Exodus 17 and the God who is our banner and refuge when the fight is bigger than us. Jehovah Shalom brings us to Judges 6 and the God who gives peace even when everything around you argues you shouldn’t have it. I also share why these names are more than poetic titles, they are windows into God’s character, His strength, His promises, and His care for His people.     What If Flexibility Is A Spiritual Discipline

    A closed highway can reveal what we really worship: comfort, control, or trust. After a Sunday that starts with joy at church, a simple drive home turns into a five-hour detour caused by nearby forest fires and massive traffic backups. By the time I finally walk through the door, I’m exhausted, frustrated, and convinced I have every right to be grumpy.  Then one word keeps cutting through the noise: flexible. I talk through what it looks like to loosen my grip on my timetable, my preferences, and even my small “deserved” rewards, and to choose peace when the situation won’t change. If you’ve ever felt your mood hinge on delays, canceled plans, or unexpected obstacles, you’ll recognize the battle instantly.  This episode originally aired on September 13, 2022, during one of the worst fire seasons in British Columbia and Washington State.  Until this year...     Big Rocks First

    Your life can feel completely full and still be missing what matters most. Today I share a quick story from a high school classroom that has stuck with me for years: a teacher, a glass jar, and a lesson that exposes how easily we let small distractions crowd out our deepest priorities. We walk through the “big rocks” metaphor step by step, from large stones to sand to water, and I explain why the order matters more than the volume. When we fill our days with the inconsequential first, there is no space left for the commitments that actually shape our character, our relationships, and our direction. This is practical time management, but it is also something deeper than productivity. I also connect the illustration to a spiritual truth rooted in Matthew 6:33: seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. When our relationship with Jesus Christ becomes the first priority, it changes how everything else settles into place, including the things we all want more of like peace, purpose, healing, and healthy relationships.
