    The Marks of Jesus

    In the final chapter of Galatians, Paul instructs the church on practical Christian living in light of the gospel of grace. Believers are called to gently restore those caught in sin while humbly watching themselves, to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, and to sow generously to the Spirit rather than to the flesh—knowing that in due time they will reap eternal life if they do not give up. Paul emphasizes supporting those who teach the Word and warns against self-deception, pride, and relying on outward religious performance. He concludes by boasting only in the cross of Christ, declaring that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision matters, but "a new creation" does. Peace and mercy belong to all who walk by this rule—the Israel of God.

    Redeemed To Serve (BCQ 48)

The preface to the Ten Commandments ("I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery," Exodus 20:1-2) shows that grace always precedes and grounds obedience. The Exodus story— bondage, Passover lamb, Red Sea deliverance, wilderness journey, and law given at Sinai—is a living parable of salvation in Christ: the Passover points to Christ our sacrificed Lamb, the Red Sea to baptismal union with Him, the wilderness to our pilgrimage of dependence and sanctification, and Sinai to Pentecost where the Spirit writes the law on hearts of flesh. Redeemed from sin's bondage, we are called to grateful obedience—not to earn salvation, but as those bought with a price—living as thankful servants who having the blood of Christ applied walk by faith in the Spirit.

    Catechism Question 47: What is the sum of the Ten Commandments?, teaches us that the sum of moral law is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Tonight we learn that love is the badge of the true disciple. We are encouraged to walk in love by the power of the One who first loved us.
