Hoobastank – Crawling in the Dark: Gacy’s Crawl Space

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! This week we're crawling back to 2001 for Hoobastank's debut single “Crawling in the Dark.” On paper, it’s peak early-2000s rock. Big riff. Huge chorus. Doug Robb sounding like he’s fighting for his life. Then we actually read the lyrics. Why is he crawling? Why is it dark? Why won’t he turn the f*****g light on? And why does the whole thing start sounding suspiciously like someone desperately trying to escape John Wayne Gacy’s crawl space? Elsewhere, Mad Dog somehow identifies a Finnish man purely by looking at his name; we discover the forgotten rollerblading video game Aggressive Inline, and Gav prepares for a four-on-one fight against 2001 Hoobastank using nothing but two blades, complete nudity and an irresponsible amount of grapeseed oil. It makes sense in context. Sort of. Follow 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die wherever you get podcasts. New episodes every Monday. Tower of Music every Friday on YouTube. Rod Stewart – Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Rod Stewart wants to know if you think he’s sexy. Unfortunately for Rod, he asked us. This week we head back to 1978 for Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?, a song involving nervous strangers, a high-rise apartment, no milk, no coffee and possibly the least seductive sentence ever written into a hit single: “Give me a dime so I can phone my mother.” We also uncover the absolutely insane career of producer Tom Dowd, investigate the legendary Rod Stewart stomach-pump story, find out why the song may have originally been taking the piss out of disco, blind-rank six huge songs from 1978 and send Mad Dog back in time to physically fight a 33-year-old Rod Stewart. And somehow that isn't even all of it. Ella Langley – Choosin’ Texas

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Ella Langley has somehow turned “Choosin’ Texas” into an absolute monster of a country hit. And we have questions. Why is this bloke apparently more in love with an entire US state than his girlfriend? Why does two-stepping instantly reveal where someone wants to live? Why did Miranda Lambert once get pulled over with a kangaroo in the passenger seat? And most importantly, why does one particular lyric sound a LOT like Ella is planning to spend the night drinking and doing something else entirely by herself? We also investigate the theory that “Choosin’ Texas” is secretly about Riley Green and Megan Moroney, blind rank some of the biggest albums of 2025 and sent Chibbs into battle against Ella Langley. Then we try to work out how a song this forgettable became one of the biggest songs on the planet. It’s 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die. New episodes every Monday. Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! This week we're taking on Mary Mary's 2000 crossover monster “Shackles (Praise You)” — a song apparently designed to get people dancing their way into Christianity without realising it. We discover embarrassingly late that the song is actually about God, investigate the theory that “Shackles” was a Trojan horse used to sneak gospel music onto mainstream radio, and try to work out what exactly happened when “everything that could go wrong all went wrong at one time.” Plus: Mad Dog goes two-on-one with Mary Mary.Warren Campbell becomes the unexpected star of the episode. We discover the incredible Campbell Coincidence.“Sins of the flesh” gets far too much airtime. We blind rank six massive albums from the year 2000.And somehow the conversation ends up at Josef Fritzl again.Take the shackles off our feet so we can podcast. Nickelback – Figured You Out

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Nickelback are one of the most hated bands on Earth. But do they actually deserve it? This week we take on “Figured You Out”, the 2003 song that kicks the door down with pants around ankles and somehow finds room for cocaine, questionable relationship choices, white stains and one particularly concerning pair of hands. We also get into the strange phenomenon of everyone claiming to hate Nickelback while admitting they’d probably have a f*****g great time at a Nickelback concert. Plus:  Bevo has to fight all four members of Nickelback Chad Kroeger’s surprisingly dodgy past  The Nickelback hate machine  The worst lyric in the song  A brand-new Blind Rank game  Six massive albums from 2003  Why Nickelback might actually be heavier than you remember  And whether Figured You Out secretly f*****g rips 1001 Songs That Make You Want To Die — new episodes every Monday. Merril Bainbridge – Mouth

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Merril Bainbridge insists Mouth isn’t really a sex song. We have some questions. This week we go back to 1994 and discover that Mouth is significantly stranger than any of us remembered. There are salty lips, people being blown apart, mysterious pieces, slapping, jumping on each other, turning people upside down and an alarming amount of discussion about bodily fluids. We also find out how Mouth went from a failed single to a massive international hit, how John Farnham helped launch Merril’s career, why Gav absolutely hated this song before the episode started, and whether he somehow managed to talk himself into liking it by the end. Plus, we decide the best song of 1994, Bevo fights Merril Bainbridge, and Mac Tango might have accidentally found its next cover. Think you know music? Adele – Someone Like You

Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Adele’s Someone Like You is supposed to be one of the great heartbreak songs of all time. But when you actually read the lyrics, things start getting a little weird. Your ex has moved on. He’s married. His dreams have come true. So naturally, the only reasonable thing to do is turn up at his house uninvited and remind him that, for you, the relationship isn’t over. This week we get into Adele’s questionable breakup strategy, hunt for the Aldi version of an ex-boyfriend, discuss whether his lifelong dream was simply riding the London Eye with a curry, discover the strange connection between this song and Charlie Puth, and investigate the conspiracy that Adele and Sam Smith might actually be the same person. Plus: 2011’s biggest songs go head-to-head, we guess Adele’s net worth, and Mad Dog has to fight 2011 Adele. Someone Like You. Never mind. Think you know music?
