    Miracles on Demand? - Luke 8:40-56

Jairus, a social success story, humbles himself and begs Jesus for help (40-42a) II. A nameless social outcast touches Jesus’ garment and is rewarded for her faith (42b-48) 42b-44 45-46 47-48 III. Jesus, defies uncleanness, touches a lifeless corpse, and summons a departed soul back to its body (49-56) 49-50 51-53 54-56 So, what? 1. It should be obvious by now—hear what Jesus teaches you. Romans 4:2-5 “So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: "I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!” -Martin Luther 2. We do not have authority to command miracles or demand health, wealth, and prosperity. Here’s the big question: What is the difference between the faith exercised by the woman with the continual hemorrhage, and Jairus in Luke 8 (which was both commended and commanded by our Lord), and the faith taught by Word of faith preachers? In other words, why should we go to the doctor while praying and not simply grab hold of Jesus’ garment? The core difference lies in the object and nature of the faith: biblical faith is a relational trust in the person and sovereignty of Jesus Christ, whereas Word of Faith (WOF) theology treats faith as an impersonal force or formula used to manipulate spiritual laws for guaranteed outcomes.

Jesus has authority over demons so listen to what He says. 2. Spiritual warfare is real. James 4:4-10: 3. Allegiance to Christ is costly. 4. Missionary Implications. (1) Jesus went to Gentiles. (2) Once delivered, the man obeyed Jesus in his home town. (3) How will you and I respond to our deliverance?

Jesus asks a big question (25) Main idea: It is not an absence of trouble, but the assurance of Jesus’ abiding presence with us through the trouble, that is the essence of living faith! For Jesus has authority over nature. So, what? 1. Yearn for the tangible experience of His presence more than deliverance from your trouble. This is the mark of mature walk with Jesus. Isaiah 43:1–3 2. Strive never to enter this sanctuary casually…unprepared for worship. 3. Wherever God guides He provides—and wherever He directs He protects; therefore walk by faith!
