Strong by Force, Not Choice: Black Girlhood, Grief & Finally Letting Myself Feel

In this episode of the Live & Be Great Podcast, I talk openly about grief, emotional suppression, anger, hypervigilance, and what happens when you are forced to be “the strong one” for too long. This is a raw, reflective conversation about what grief brings to the surface — especially when you were taught to self-soothe too early, minimize your pain, or carry emotional weight without enough support. I share personal stories, deeper reflections on loss, and what it means to return to yourself when life has forced you into survival mode. We talk about the pressure placed on Black women to be strong, the emotional cost of always needing proof before your pain is believed, the way stress lives in the body, and why support systems matter more than ever. If you have been grieving, overwhelmed, angry, numb, or trying to hold it all together, this episode is for you. If you’re ready for support, healing, and deeper self-understanding, I’d love to work with you. Who Checks on the Strong Friend? Grief, Reciprocity & Real Connection

I’m still grieving the loss of my friend Danielle, and this week I came home from her wake and funeral with even more to process. This episode is another real, off-the-cuff conversation about what grief has been bringing to the surface for me: anger, sadness, unanswered questions, changing beliefs, old friendships, family dynamics, authenticity, and something I think a lot of “strong” people eventually have to ask: Who is checking on me? I talk about why anger actually helped me process some of my grief, what it felt like attending a Christian funeral while now identifying as agnostic, and how I’m learning to make room for people whose beliefs are different from mine without abandoning my own. The funeral also brought me back into rooms with people I have known for years, and that made me think about how relationships change as we change. Can people who knew an older version of you make room for who you are now? How much should you hold back just to keep the peace? When does being understanding turn into always being the person expected to adjust? And when you are usually the person checking on everybody else, holding space, solving problems, or being “the strong one,” what happens when you need somebody too? We talk about reciprocal relationships, checking the facts instead of assuming people don’t care, giving people the opportunity to show up differently, knowing when to stop chasing one-sided connections, and finding people who allow you to show up as your full self. One thing grief keeps reminding me is that we were never meant to do all of this alone. Find your people. Let them know you exist. Give people an opportunity to love the person you are becoming. And give yourself permission to not just live—but to Live & Be Great. yZl4yirhAY1DVcOqgDg2 Timestamps: 00:00 — I Need People to Check on Me Too00:21 — Processing Grief After Danielle’s Funeral02:09 — Why We Need Answers After Loss03:27 — Anger, Sadness & Grief05:06 — Faith, Survival & the Gray Areas08:09 — The Funeral: Comfort, Memories & Changing Beliefs12:08 — Reconnecting With Old Friends17:06 — Who Supports the Strong Friend?18:55 — Will People Accept Who You’ve Become?20:12 — Changing the Standard & Checking the Facts25:03 — When Grief Is Everywhere27:02 — When Loss Brings People Back Together30:04 — What Real Support Can Look Like30:59 — Give People a Chance to Show Up33:03 — Authenticity, Support & Finding Your Tribe36:06 — Worthiness, Accountability & Living Great Need support understanding the patterns showing up in your life or relationships? When Grief Finds You: Loss, Regret & Reaching Out While You Can

Sometimes the episode you planned to record is not the episode life gives you. In this deeply personal episode of Live & Be Great, I process grief in real time after learning that my college friend and former Savannah State University Amplifiers dance teammate, Danielle, passed away unexpectedly. Her death brought up more than sadness. It made me confront the guilt that can come when adult friendships grow distant, what it means to be the person who has always tried to keep everybody connected, and the pressure we put on ourselves to become more successful, more accomplished, more healed, or more “together” before we allow ourselves to fully enjoy our lives. I found myself asking questions I think many of us eventually have to face: Why didn’t I reach out? Has too much time passed? Why am I waiting until I reach some imaginary finish line before I let myself live? And whose standard am I using to decide whether I’ve done enough? We talk about friendship, ADHD, being “the glue,” grief, mortality, perfectionism, changing definitions of success, the expectations many millennials grew up with, and why sometimes the simplest thing you can do is tell somebody, “I was thinking about you.” This episode is also a reminder that you don’t need the perfect words, the perfect body, the perfect career, the perfect amount of money, or the perfect version of yourself before you reconnect with the people you love or allow yourself to experience joy. If somebody keeps crossing your mind, reach out. If there is something that gives you even a moment of genuine joy, make room for it. And if grief has you questioning your life, your relationships, or what you want your next chapter to look like, you do not have to figure all of that out by yourself. 00:00 — The episode I didn't expect to record 06:30 — Friendship, distance & being the glue 13:30 — Guilt, grief & growing apart as adults 21:00 — What are we working so hard for? 29:00 — Death, memories & how I want to be remembered 34:50 — Changing the standards we live by 36:50 — Reach out while you still can Ready for support understanding your patterns, your story, and what you want your next chapter to look like? Common Sense Isn’t Common: Understanding the Programming Behind What We Believe

Do you ever wonder why something feels like “common sense” to you—but another person genuinely doesn’t see it the same way? In this episode of Live & Be Great with Latonya McDonald, MS, I unpack the programming behind what we believe: the messages we absorb from family, culture, religion, race, gender, education, trauma, relationships, media, and the systems around us. Not all programming is bad. Some of it protects us. Some of it helps us survive. But some beliefs eventually need to be questioned—especially when they begin affecting our relationships, our safety, or the way we treat other people. We talk about the difference between understanding someone’s programming and excusing their behavior, why patterns still matter when evaluating safety, and why individual behavior must still give us evidence. I also share some of my own experiences with deprogramming, including how I had to reconsider my beliefs around corporal punishment, take accountability for behavior I once participated in, apologize, and choose differently moving forward. In this episode, we explore: Why “common sense” is not actually common to everyoneHow family, culture, religion, trauma, and systems shape our beliefsWhy understanding someone’s programming does not eliminate accountabilityHow to recognize patterns without assuming every individual is identicalWhen curiosity helps—and when it becomes a way to avoid an answer you don’t likeWhy shame can make people fight harder to protect an old belief systemHow to tell the difference between someone’s potential for change and the evidence they are giving you right nowWhy your past has witnesses—and how changed behavior becomes evidence of real growthHow to have difficult conversations without making the goal simply proving that you are rightI also walk you through the Live & Be Great Method: Be Seen.Name the Pattern.Understand the Why.Choose on Purpose.Live & Be Great. Because understanding someone’s programming gives you context. What they do with new information gives you evidence. And what you do with that evidence is where your discernment, boundaries, accountability, and choices come in. 00:00 — Everybody Is Programmed—Including Me06:15 — Before I Judge the Belief, I Want to Understand Where It Came From10:36 — Patterns Matter, but Individuals Still Give Us Evidence20:29 — Toxic Relationships: Why “Just Leave” Isn’t Common Sense22:24 — Curiosity Should Help You Find the Answer—Not Avoid It28:24 — Critical Thinking Means Being Willing to Be Wrong33:24 — Shame vs. Accountability: What Happens When You Know Better?35:57 — My Story: Corporal Punishment, Programming, and Repair40:42 — Your Past Has Witnesses: What Real Change Looks Like47:53 — The Live & Be Great Method: Be Seen, Name the Pattern, Choose on Purpose51:01 — What You Can Expect If You Work With Me52:45 — Don’t Just Tell Them to Leave + Free Safety Resource53:37 — Final Reflection: Grace, Accountability, and Choosing on Purpose If someone you love may be in a toxic or abusive relationship, I’m currently developing: Don’t Just Tell Them to Leave: A Practical Guide to Helping a Loved One Leave a Toxic or Abusive Relationship Safely Join the waiting list and access the free Before-You-Act Safety Checklist here: https://liveandbegreat.com/dont-just-tell-them-to-leave You do not have to wait for the full book to begin thinking through safer first steps. Shared Pain Does Not Always Mean Shared Empathy

Just because someone survived what you survived does not mean they are automatically safe with your story. In this episode of the Live & Be Great podcast, Latonya McDonald, MS explores why shared pain does not always create empathy—and why some survivors may respond to another person’s pain with judgment, comparison, dismissal, or shame. Shared experience can help someone understand what an experience feels like. But it does not guarantee that they have processed their own pain enough to respond with compassion. Latonya discusses how unresolved shame, grief, survival pride, family conditioning, cultural pressure, and internalized oppression may influence the way people talk about other survivors. She also explains why advice such as “just leave,” “I went through it too,” or “you should be over it” can deepen shame rather than provide meaningful support. In this episode: • Why someone with a similar experience may still be unsafe with your story • How shame can disguise itself as strength or accountability • Why “just leave” is not a safety plan • The real barriers people may face when leaving an abusive relationship • How public survivor narratives can be weaponized against other victims • Why forgiveness does not automatically mean access • The myth of the perfect victim • How shared oppression can still produce selective empathy • What survivor-centered empathy actually sounds like • Questions to ask instead of judging, comparing, or controlling Shared experience can inform empathy, but it cannot replace listening. UPCOMING E-BOOK Latonya is currently developing: Don’t Just Tell Them to Leave: A Practical Guide to Helping a Loved One Leave a Toxic or Abusive Relationship Safely The guide is being created for people who want to support a friend, family member, adult child, teenager, parent, sibling, coworker, neighbor, or other loved one without leading with panic, judgment, pressure, or unsafe advice.
