PERSPECTIVE - A tale of two sons.

I remember being told about two twin brothers who were raised by an abusive, alcoholic father. Day after day, throughout their entire childhood, they witnessed their dad enter into fits of rage and beat their mother in front of them, and then take the belt or his fists to them as well. In adulthood, one of the brothers became just like his dad. He was an alcoholic, he couldn’t control his temper, and he took it all out on his wife and kids. The other brother became just the opposite. He was extremely gentle and loving to his wife and kids, and he never touched a drop of alcohol. Both sons were asked the same question: why did you turn out the way that you did? And they both gave the same answer. “With a father like I had, what choice did I have?” The answer to this predicament, I think, hinges on the word perspective. If you pull yourself back out of the shoes of the two sons who had their abusive, alcoholic dad as their life example and step into your own shoes as an outside observer, you have an objective perspective on the behavior displayed by each of the sons. Something within you resonates with the understanding that the gentle son behaved more correctly towards his family than the abusive son did towards his, right? What is that “something” within you? Building off of the previous episode, we are going deeper in our exploration of how to see the light in dark places. We will discuss how to make light out of darkness by learning how to change your perspective to discover the light in the darkness.
