On iconoclasm and slavery

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the antiracist protests and the -sometimes destructive- removal of controversial statues from squares and parks in several countries. So when does iconoclasm turn from a defensible act of protest into senseless vandalism? And: does erasing the symbols erase the reason why these symbols were there in the first place? A personal view.

Clark Ashton Smith - The double shadow

Classic Lovecraftian horror with incredible depth and beautiful, baroque language. Smith is often associated with the Cthulhu myth authors but had a completely unique, archaic style. The worlds he dreamed up were detailed and full of wonder, from medieval French Averoigne to exotic Zothique and ancient Hyperborea.

Saki - Korte verhalen

Saki was een Britse schrijver die opgroeide in het koloniale milieu vol wannabe's, nouveaux-riches en allerlei andere verschrikkelijke mensen die gebukt gingen onder moordende sociale conventies en bekrompenheid. Hij neemt dat milieu geweldig op de hak in een serie van grappige, vileine en soms griezelige korte verhalen.

A wonderfully collection of witty stories from the heyday of colonial Britain. Stephen Fry actually did a much better reading of these than I possibly ever could... Fry writes about Saki: “Saki remains, from a distance of a hundred years, just about the sharpest, cruellest, funniest and most elegant short story writer in our language. Italo Calvino - De Onzichtbare Steden

De Onzichtbare Steden is een boek van de Italiaanse meesterverteller Italo Calvino uit 1972. Het boek is een raamvertelling: Marco Polo bezoekt de Mongoolse leider Kublai Khan en vertelt hem over 64 steden die hij op zijn reizen heeft bezocht. Het zijn allemaal fantasiesteden met namen als Diomira, Octavia, Aglaura en Moriana. Stuk voor stuk beschrijven ze een enkel aspect van elke stad, maar dan doorgetrokken tot het uiterste. Het levert een boek met 64 juweeltjes van korte schetsen op, die zo beeldend zijn dat je het boek onmogelijk in een keer kunt uitlezen. Je wilt in je gedachten rond blijven dwalen in die steden voordat je naar de volgende betoverende stad vertrekt.
