SGA's Rivals Aren't Players. They're All-Time Greats with OKC Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza

The Oklahoma City Thunder lost in the Western Conference Finals last year. Then they traded Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe. And Clemente Almanza still thinks the window is wide open. In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, the lead writer for OKC Thunder Wire breaks down a roster that enters the year as a co-title favorite with the Spurs. Those three exits were not a teardown. Sam Presti called them a quarter of last year’s rotation minutes, cost-cutting moves to stay out of the second apron. Almanza walks through what that actually means: Cason Wallace taking Dort’s starting spot, Ajay Mitchell coming off a breakout year (and a series where he made Austin Reaves a non-factor), and a bench that now has to replace three guys who helped win the franchise’s first title. Then he goes somewhere spicier. On Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Almanza’s line is simple: his rivals aren’t active players anymore. They’re the all-time greats. Back-to-back MVP. Thirty-plus points on elite efficiency for four straight years. The all-time record for the longest 20-point streak, past Wilt Chamberlain. Almanza puts this era’s faces in one group — SGA, Jokić, Wemby, Luka, Giannis — and argues the greatness is not being appreciated the way Steph’s 2010s, Kobe’s 2000s, or MJ’s 1990s were. The hate, he says, is the proof. We also get the real variable for 2026-27: health. Chet Holmgren said at media day that the hamstring issues cleared around mid-June. Jalen Williams was basically a non-factor in last year’s run, and Ajay Mitchell missed most of the West Finals with a calf strain. Almanza’s read is blunt. This is title or bust, it has been for three or four years, and if SGA is healthy they should still walk to 60 wins and a top-two seed. He also flags Utah and Dallas, and Cooper Flagg, as the West teams worth watching behind OKC and the Spurs. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 Is SGA already in the all-time conversation, or is that too early? If You Can't Play With Caleb Wilson, You Can't Play for the Bulls with CHGO Big DAVE

Chicago Bulls fans are allowed to feel something again — and this time it isn’t blind hope.In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, CHGO’s Big DAVE comes on to break down why the 2026-27 Bulls finally feel different. After years of dysfunction and a 31-51 season that missed the playoffs for a fourth straight year, the franchise hit rock bottom… and then started acting like it.The turning point? Michael Reinsdorf looking Bulls Nation in the eye and saying the words fans never expected: “I’m sorry. We screwed up. And I will make this right.” Big Dave says that apology didn’t just land — it healed something in long-suffering fans. From there, the rebuild gets real: Bryson Graham as the new basketball ops lead — the guy who says if he’s the smartest person in the room, the Bulls will fail Tiago Splitter as head coach (Popovich tree) + Taj Gibson back on the bench A bigger player-development staff, more video work, and real collaboration upstairs An open practice at Horner Park — free, public, never-been-done fan access in Chicago And then there’s Caleb Wilson.Big Dave is all-in. Wilson’s summer-league work ethic, the “yeah, I’m next” look at the Jordan statue, the record-setting game where he only cared that they lost, and Kevin Garnett showing up just to watch him — none of it feels fluky. Dave’s line is blunt: if you can’t play with Caleb Wilson, you can’t play for the Chicago Bulls. This isn’t “title or bust” hype. It’s logical optimism — a “fun bad” year full of blocks, run-outs, alley-oops, and a roster where everybody has something to prove. Giddey, Powell, Claxton, Patrick Williams, the young pieces… the proving ground is open.🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 Are you buying the new Bulls era — or still waiting to see it on the floor? His Favorite Call Ever Was When He Kept His Mouth Shut- Nets Radio Analyst Tim Capstraw

Tim Capstraw has been the voice next to the Brooklyn Nets for 25 years — and he still can’t believe they’re letting him hang around. In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, the Nets radio analyst opens up about the biggest thrill of his life: his first NBA broadcast with the Jason Kidd-era New Jersey Nets, the three weeks of 5 a.m. prep, and the imposter syndrome of a guy who wasn’t a star player or a famous coach. He walks us through the grind after getting let go at Wagner College — practicing every day at 40 until the calls started coming — and the lucky break that involved Jack Armstrong turning the job down and Mike Breen making a recommendation. Capstraw breaks down the craft of radio: the play-by-play guy paints the picture, the analyst “frames it and zings it,” and why it takes a long time to broadcast like yourself (his Miles Davis line). His favorite moment in broadcasting? The night he kept his mouth shut — silently writing “Pierce” so Chris Carrino could hit the legendary “Paul Pierce rejected!” call in Game 7 vs. Toronto. We also get into the beauty of the modern game’s chess match, why NBA coaches are “cream rises,” his love for Brook Lopez and Cam Johnson, and a honest Nets outlook: player development, Michael Brown’s “it factor,” Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr., coach Jordy Fernandez, and the blunt rebuild truth — “We need a Jokić. We need a second rounder that turns out to be the best player in the league.” Plus Brooklyn as the “third biggest city,” Barclays Center, and building culture while the Knicks own the championship glow.🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology for smart, insider-level NBA and WNBA conversations every week. 💬 What’s your favorite Nets radio call of all time? Clippers Scandal, Engelbert Exit & Steph's $116M Bet: Hoopsology ITL

The NBA just hit the Los Angeles Clippers with one of the harshest punishments in league history. On this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, Matt Thomas, Justin Goodrum and Alan Munzer break down everything: the $30 million fine, the loss of five first-round picks (2029–2033), Steve Ballmer's one-year suspension, Lawrence Frank's six-month suspension without pay, and Kawhi Leonard's $700,000 penalty. Alan explains why he's called this a RICO case from day one, what the Eastern District of New York investigation could mean, and why he thinks Kawhi taking the deal "screwed the Clippers over one more time on his way out of town." We also ask the question every fan should be asking: which other front offices are cleaning their books right now? Then we get into the WNBA's leadership shake-up. Cathy Engelbert is stepping down as WNBA commissioner. We weigh her business wins (team valuations averaging $460 million, record TV viewership, landmark media rights deals) against her strained relationships with players like A'ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark. Who should replace her? We debate Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. Plus: is Steph Curry's 2-year, $116 million extension a loyalty move or a real push to compete in the West? And our full WNBA playoff preview: Liberty vs Lynx, Mystics vs Dream, Wings vs Valkyries and Fever vs Aces. A healthy Caitlin Clark faces A'ja Wilson, the Valkyries bring elite defense, and Minnesota looks like a team of destiny. kawhi leonard, clippers punishment, steve ballmer, clippers news, nba news, clippers, la clippers, clippers scandal, kawhi leonard raptors, lawrence frank, adam silver, cathy engelbert, wnba commissioner, wnba, caitlin clark, a'ja wilson, sue bird, steph curry, steph curry contract, minnesota lynx, golden state valkyries, indiana fever, las vegas aces, hoopsology podcast, nba podcast, wnba podcast #NBANews #KawhiLeonard #WNBA Podcast Person? Travis Demers went from calling high school games for $50 a week in Astoria, Oregon, to becoming the Voice of the Portland Trail Blazers on radio. Toronto Tempo's Wild Inaugural Season: Marina Mabrey's Redemption, Kiki Rice Rookie Year with Savanna Hamilton

In this episode of the Hoopsology Podcast, we sit down with Savanna Hamilton — sports broadcaster and WNBA analyst covering the Toronto Tempo— to break down the Tempo's historic, and often chaotic, inaugural season in the WNBA. Savanna takes us inside the year from the ground up: the surreal experience of documenting an expansion franchise's first season, the relentless injury bug that hit stars like Marina Mabrey, Nyara Sabally, and Kiki Rice, and how head coach Sandy Brondello's run-and-gun system has reshaped the roster around versatile players like Laura Juskaite. We dig into Marina Mabrey's incredible turnaround season — from her "crash out queen" reputation to an All-Star campaign capped by a 53-point outburst and MVP chants from the home crowd — and get an inside look at Kiki Rice's smooth rookie transition despite a shortened, CBA-delayed training camp. Savanna also reflects on the emotional home opener in front of Toronto's first-ever WNBA crowd, what the team means for a new generation of Canadian fans, and how WNBA media coverage in Canada compares to the explosion of interest south of the border. Plus, she shares her take on the league-wide MVP race between Olivia Miles and A'ja Wilson, breaks down the playoff picture, and teases a big career announcement dropping this fall — including her role narrating the upcoming ESPN documentary on the Tempo's inaugural season. "We Don't Want to Leave Anything on the Table" — The Lynx Are Done Waiting with Minnesota Star Tribune's women's sports reporter, Cassidy Hettesheimer

The Minnesota Lynx own one of the best records in the WNBA heading into the playoffs, and Star Tribune women's sports reporter Cassidy Hettesheimer joins Hoopsology to unpack exactly how they got here — and why anything short of a championship this year will feel like unfinished business. Cassidy traces the season back to training camp, when even head coach Cheryl Reeve wasn't sure what to expect with Napheesa Collier sidelined recovering from double ankle surgery. What nobody fully anticipated was Olivia Miles: a rookie the coaching staff projected using full veteran statistical benchmarks rather than typical rookie expectations, who has since exceeded even that. Cassidy breaks down what makes Miles unique among a historically strong rookie class — a playmaking gift that makes everyone around her better, unlocking rim pressure the Lynx offense didn't have in years past — and shares a wonderfully human detail about Miles' transition to the league: figuring out where to sit at the team cafeteria table while simultaneously being trusted to direct All-Stars on the floor. Cassidy details the old-school, mentor-driven culture Cheryl Reeve has built around her, with veterans like Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams intentionally embracing and elevating their rookie floor general. The conversation turns emotional when discussing Napheesa Collier's road back. Cassidy explains how Collier, a deeply goal-oriented player, is drawing on a hard lesson from 2022 — when she rushed back too quickly to share the floor with retiring legend Sylvia Fowles and paid for it in her offseason recovery — to take a slower, more deliberate approach this time, telling reporters she still felt around 80-85% recovered even a month after her return. Cassidy also shares how Collier's FIBA World Cup selection became a meaningful part of that process, giving her valuable competitive reps as a two-time Olympian while representing her country. From there, the two discuss why this season carries championship-or-bust weight after the Lynx's gutting 2024 Finals loss to the Liberty and a disappointing early playoff exit in 2025, and how Minnesota's league-worst free-throw rate could become a real vulnerability against the physical playoff basketball ahead. The episode closes with two well-deserved shoutouts: Kayla McBride's quietly spectacular age-34 season, including her best scoring numbers since 2018 and a franchise single-game three-point record, and a league-wide nod to the Washington Mystics' exciting, ahead-of-schedule youth rebuild. 🏀 Subscribe to Hoopsology Podcast for in-depth NBA and WNBA conversations, insider interviews, and breaking news breakdowns you won't find anywhere else. 👉 Follow Cassidy Hettesheimer: X/Instagram @CassidyHett, and read her Lynx coverage at startribune.com/sports. 👉 Drop a comment: Is this finally the Lynx's championship season? #MinnesotaLynx #WNBA #OliviaMiles #NapheesaCollier #Hoopsology Learn more about your ad choices. One Injury Changed Everything: How the Sparks' Season Fell Apart with Southern California News Group.Reporter John W. Davis

The Los Angeles Sparks sit at 15-25, headed for a sixth straight season without a playoff appearance, and Hoopsology brings in Sparks beat writer John W. Davis (Southern California News Group) for an unflinching look at how a franchise with every natural advantage in the league ended up here. John walks through the organizational chaos that's defined this stretch: four different head coaches since the drought began (Derek Fisher, interim Fred Williams, Curt Miller, and now Lynne Roberts), a revolving door of roster gambles that never got the runway to work, and a front office that kept trading the future for a present that never materialized — including dealing what became Dominique Malonga for Kelsey Plum after landing back-to-back No. 2 picks. He traces the fall from the Sparks' actual championship-caliber core of Candace Parker, Chelsea Gray, and Nneka Ogwumike, and explains why this season's collapse specifically comes down to one moment: Kelsey Plum, playing like a legitimate top-five player in the league, going down with an injury that the team simply had no answer for.
