Loved your "Room to Grow" podcast and especially about Billie Eilish. There was a time when Hilary Clinton and Tipper Gore, as first and second ladies, piled on black rappers for their lyrics while completely ignoring cops brutalizing our inner cities. Their argument was that the lyrics were "violent", and at that time even Henry Louis Gates did not come to their defense. That these are just lyrics, they are not acting violently, but reporting violence through song and dance. This is what Billie is coming from: the lyrics are not literal truths. The kids not violent, but acting out in art. Why can't people see that instead of just taking the "white narraitve" of "black violence"? Billie knows more about this than your average white kid because she grew up in one of the blackest and toughest neighborhoods of the LA. Most black commenters criticizing Billie today are making the same mistake as Hilary and Tipper Gore made then.
