Street Side Talks Episode 3: Henk Swarttouw

In Street Side Talks we chat to the key individuals that are working to create more accessible, equitable and sustainable cities through transformative projects and initiatives. In episode three, we're at COP26 to discuss the role of cycling with the European Cyclists Federation President, Henk Swarttouw. Henk has been cycling for over 50 years and as a former Dutch ambassador to both Finland and Denmark, has been engaged in cycling diplomacy for a decade. We discuss the ECF's response to COVID, how the organisation has been helping nations develop and deliver cycling policy, and why cycling needs greater representation at COP, and beyond, if world leaders are to reach emission targets. Episode 5: Addis Ababa

In our fifth episode we are joined by Biruk Terrefe and Seble Samuel, as we take a look at how Addis Ababa, the fifth of our global cities, is responding to COVID-19. We discuss why, and how, the city's authorities have relocated rather than restricted access to public space, and the ways in which the capital is leading Ethiopia's ambitious target of becoming a middle income country by 2025. Biruk is a PhD candidate at the University of Oxford who’s research is focused on the politics of infrastructure and urbanization in Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa region, while Seble is a geographer and climate justice advocate, who is a co-founder and organizer of Menged le Sew, Ethiopia’s open streets movement.
