EPISODE 246 : Your Customers Are Going on Holidays. Is Your Money Going With Them?

Your customers are preparing for Christmas. But have you thought about what happens to the money they still owe you? As the holiday season approaches, businesses start closing, accounts departments move to skeleton staff, and the person responsible for paying your invoices suddenly isn't available until January. Meanwhile, your business expenses aren't taking a holiday! But here's a thought... What if getting paid faster wasn't about chasing customers harder, offering discounts or extending payment terms? What if it was simply about making it easier for your customers to pay you? In this episode, we're talking about practical, creative ways to improve your accounts receivable and collect outstanding invoices before the Christmas shutdown — without sacrificing your profit. We'll explore: How to break larger invoices into smaller payments while keeping the original due date. Why communicating the benefit to your customer can make payment conversations easier. How to get ahead of Christmas closures and final accounts payable runs. Simple ways to remove the administrative roadblocks that delay payments. What to do when customers already have overdue invoices. Why discounting shouldn't be your first strategy for getting paid. And most importantly, how to make the payment process work better for both your business AND your customers. Because there's a big difference between being flexible about HOW someone pays you and WHETHER they pay you. Before your customers disappear for Christmas, let's make sure your money doesn't disappear with them. 🎧 Listen now and take away some simple strategies you can put into action this week. EPISODE 245 : The EFTPOS Surcharge Ban: The Cost You Don't See

EFTPOS surcharges are gone in Australia. But does removing the surcharge mean removing the cost? And could the decisions businesses make in response actually cost them more? With Australian businesses facing changes to card payment surcharges, many are questioning whether accepting EFTPOS is still worth it. Some are even considering moving back to cash-only transactions. But before you ditch EFTPOS to save on merchant fees, there's a much bigger conversation we need to have. What if the cost you're trying to eliminate is actually helping your business make money? In this episode, we explore the impact of Australia's EFTPOS surcharge ban on small businesses, the psychology behind consumer spending, and whether removing a fee customers have complained about for years could actually create new opportunities. We're talking about the real cost of cash payments, the convenience consumers have come to expect, the potential impact on sales and customer loyalty, and why the cheapest way to process a transaction isn't necessarily the most profitable. And importantly, what business owners can do to protect their margins without making it harder for customers to spend. Because here's the message at the heart of this conversation: Don't make a business decision based on the cost you can see without considering the cost you can't. If you're a small business owner navigating rising operating costs, merchant fees, cashflow pressures or pricing decisions, this episode will challenge you to look beyond the obvious expense and consider the bigger financial picture. 🎧 Tune in to Episode 245 and discover why saving money today isn't always the same as protecting your profitability tomorrow.

EPISODE 244 : Stop Being Your Customers’ Bank

Your customers have reasons for not paying. But who's looking after your business while you're busy understanding theirs? They're having a tough month. Their accounting system isn't working. Someone's been unwell. They're waiting for another customer to pay them. And because you value the relationship, you give them more time. Meanwhile, you've paid your staff, covered your suppliers, delivered the work, and you're left wondering where the cash is going to come from to meet your next round of commitments. Sound familiar? In this episode, we're having a conversation about something far too many small business owners accept as part of doing business: customers who don't pay on time, and the financial pressure that creates. But this isn't just about chasing overdue invoices. We're talking about why being understanding can become expensive, why your sales and account management teams need to care about getting paid just as much as securing work, and how to protect your cashflow without damaging valuable customer relationships. We'll explore: Why late-paying customers can be putting your business at financial risk. The difference between being compassionate and financing someone else's problems. Why more sales don't necessarily mean better cashflow. How to approach overdue payments without feeling guilty or uncomfortable. The importance of clear payment expectations and accountability across your team. Practical steps to take control of outstanding invoices and improve your cashflow. Because here's the thing. An explanation isn't a payment plan. And a sale isn't financially successful just because someone said yes. You can care about your customers, understand their circumstances and maintain great relationships without putting your own business at risk. My friend, you're running a business. Not a bank. And being good to your customers should never mean being bad to your business. 🎧 Tune in to Episode 244 and let's talk about getting paid for the work you've already done.

EPISODE 243 : Your Prices Need to Go Up. Now What?

You know your prices need to go up. You've probably known for a while. But knowing you need to increase your prices and actually knowing what the new price should be are two very different things. Because picking 5% because it feels reasonable isn't a pricing strategy. And neither is looking at what everyone else is charging and choosing a number somewhere in the middle. In this episode, we're talking about how to raise your prices in your small business — properly. We'll look at what needs to happen behind the scenes before you announce a price increase, including your costs, margins, capacity, fixed costs and what your business actually needs to return to you. Then we're tackling the part that makes so many business owners nervous: telling your customers. How much do you explain? How much notice should you give? What about existing clients? And what happens when someone pushes back? Because your customer is allowed to not like your new price. That doesn't automatically mean your pricing decision was wrong. In this episode, we'll talk about: How to work out what your new prices actually need to be Why simply adding 5% or 10% might not fix the problem Why competitor pricing should be information — not your pricing formula How capacity affects what you need to charge How to communicate a price increase without apologising for it What to consider with long-term and existing clients How to respond when a customer questions your new price The difference between genuine customer feedback and price-increase backlash Why losing a customer doesn't automatically mean you'll be financially worse off And perhaps most importantly, how to feel confident standing behind your new price. Because pricing confidence doesn't come from simply telling yourself you're worth more. It comes from knowing why you're charging it. If you've been saying, “I know I need to put my prices up, but…” — this episode is for you.

EPISODE 241 : Small Business Problems? Here’s Where I’d Start.

What if, for one episode, we just… solved some stuff? Because there’s already plenty of conversation about how tough small business is right now. You know. You’re living it. So in this episode, we’re doing something different. I’m taking some of the real problems I hear from small business owners all the time and answering one very practical question: If THAT’S the problem… where would I start? Customers aren’t paying you on time? You’re busy, but you’re not making enough money? Business costs keep increasing? You think you need to raise your prices? You need more customers? You desperately need another staff member — but don’t think you can afford one? There’s a tax bill coming and the money isn’t there? Or maybe you’re looking at the whole thing thinking… “I don’t even know if my business is doing okay.” We’re tackling all of it. Not with complicated financial jargon or another 47-step strategy. With real, workable starting points. We’ll talk about small business cash flow, late payments and unpaid invoices, rising business costs, pricing and profit margins, staffing and capacity, tax obligations, reducing expenses, finding more customers — and why the obvious solution isn’t always the right one. Because sometimes you don’t need to fix your entire business. You just need to know what to look at first. Give me the problem. I’ll give you somewhere to start. 🎧 Listen to Episode 241: Small Business Problems? Here’s Where I’d Start.
