🎙️E49: The 401k Blueprint: From Plan Design to Implementation

In Episode 49 of The 3 Wins Podcast, Russ Clemmer from Legacy Advisory Partners in Alpharetta, Georgia, kicks off a series on 401k plans. He discusses their importance, how to customize them for companies and employees, and what decision-makers need to know about managing them effectively. Let’s dive in! Key Takeaways 1. Introduction to 401k Plans [00:00:22] * [00:00:48] 401k plans are specifically for for-profit companies * Not-for-profit companies and government entities have their own types of plans * [00:00:58] They are investment accounts allowing employees to invest pre-tax dollars from their paychecks * This reduces the employee's taxable income for the year * [00:01:06] Growth in these accounts is tax-deferred until retirement * Taxes are paid when funds are withdrawn, typically in retirement * [00:01:11] The goal is to help employees achieve financial independence and retirement readiness 2. Roles in 401k Plan Management [00:02:00] * [00:01:57] Government: Sets rules through IRS code Specifically, section 401k of the Internal Revenue Code [00:02:17] * Company: Offers the plan (optional but recommended) * Responsible for plan design and management * [00:02:25] Employees: Participate in the plan * Need to understand and utilize the plan for their benefit * [00:02:51] Support Group: Includes advisors, record keepers, administrators, accountants, and legal teams * Advisors: Co-fiduciary with the company, responsible for investment menu * Record keepers: Track performance and account details * Administrators: Handle compliance, forms, and notifications * Accountants: Ensure financial accuracy * Legal teams: Navigate ERISA laws and regulations like Secure 2.0 3. Best Practices for 401k Plans [00:05:00] * [00:05:38] Design plans based on employee demographics * Consider education levels, income ranges, and job types * [00:06:28] Consider automatic enrollment and auto-increase features * Help overcome employee inertia in joining and increasing contributions * [00:10:28] Regularly review and update plan design * Companies change over time, so should their 401k plans * Recommended review frequency: quarterly or semi-annually * [00:12:14] Establish a formal investment committee with a charter * Ensures proper documentation and decision-making processes * Should have a legal document (committee charter) with approved members 4. Investment Considerations [00:13:41] * [00:19:06] Aim for about 15 funds in the investment lineup * Too few limits options, too many confuses participants * [00:20:02] Include a mix of equity and bond funds * Equity: Ownership in companies (stocks) * Bonds: Debt investments * Consider offering various categories: large, mid, small-cap; value, growth, blend; domestic and international * [00:27:24] Consider offering target date funds for a "do it for me" approach * Automatically adjusts risk over time as the participant approaches retirement * Helps prevent inappropriate risk levels near retirement 5. Fee Management [00:15:12] * [00:15:42] Ensure all fees (advisor, record keeper, administrator, fund fees) are appropriate and transparent * Fees should be in line with market rates and government expectations * Participants need to understand they're paying fees for fund management * [00:16:33] Regularly review and benchmark fees * Avoid scenarios where fees are disproportionate to services provided 6. Automatic Features [00:28:08] * [00:29:06] Automatic enrollment helps employees start saving * Overcomes inertia in joining the plan * Employees can opt-out if they choose * [00:29:58] Automatic escalation gradually increases contribution percentages * Helps employees save more over time without active management * Can be designed to match company contribution limits Additional Resources Check out our new book, Collaboration Effect on Profit: Overcoming Founder’s Syndrome to Achieve Sustainable Success, here: https://legacyadvisorypartners.com/collaboration-effect-book/ Download our FREE whitepaper, “The 3 Wins: How to Unleash the Collaboration Effect on Profit in Your Company,” here: https://www.legacyadvisorypartners.com/signup-for-free-book-download.html#gref  Subscribe to The 3 Wins 👇 Receive each episode (and its key takeaways) in your inbox: Where to Find The 3 Wins Podcast * Substack * YouTube (Legacy Advisory Partners Channel) * Apple Podcasts * Spotify The 3 Wins Podcast is brought to you by Legacy Advisory Partners. 🎙️ E46: A Soldier's Mission: Black Hawk Down to the 'Unbeatable Army' with Jeff Struecker

Welcome to Episode 46 of The 3 Wins Podcast, brought to you by Legacy Advisory Partners! I’m Russ Clemmer, the CEO at Legacy, host of The 3 Wins Podcast, and co-author of the new book, Collaboration Effect on Profit: Overcoming Founder’s Syndrome to Achieve Sustainable Success. (Grab your copy here.) Today, retired Army Ranger Jeff Struecker joins me on the The 3 Wins Podcast. Jeff served a critical role in the Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu, which occurred during the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia on October 3-4, 1993. (Jeff was portrayed by actor Brian Van Holt in the 2001 film “Black Hawk Down.”) At the time, he was a Staff Sergeant and squad leader assigned to Task Force Ranger as part of the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment. His specific role included leading a convoy to rescue wounded soldiers during the intense fighting. Despite heavy enemy fire and significant risk, he managed to navigate the convoy through hostile territory multiple times. His efforts were crucial in extracting the injured and getting them to safety, demonstrating exceptional courage and determination. After retiring from the military in 2011, Struecker, who became a pastor, launched the Unbeatable Army ministry initiative to help people develop resilience, leadership skills, and a strong faith foundation. The program focuses on: * Faith and Resilience: Teaching participants to rely on their faith and develop mental and emotional resilience to overcome life's challenges. * Leadership Development: Providing training and resources to build effective leadership skills that can be applied in various aspects of life, including personal, professional, and spiritual domains. * Community Building: Creating a supportive community where individuals can share experiences, support one another, and grow together. Through this program, Jeff aims to inspire and equip individuals to become strong leaders and resilient warriors in their own lives, drawing on his experiences as a Ranger and his faith-based perspective. If you’re looking for a jolt of inspiration and golden nuggets of leadership advice, then get ready to listen to Episode 46 of The 3 Wins Podcast! Key Takeaways * Finding Faith at a Young Age * Jeff became a Christian at the age of 13 after his neighbors shared the gospel with him. * Despite growing up in a non-religious family, the simplicity of their message and their willingness to work through his questions led him to surrender his life to Christ. * The Continuity of Experience * In the military, there's a tradition of passing down knowledge and experience from seasoned veterans to new soldiers, which Jeff calls the "continuity of experience." * This concept is akin to biblical discipleship, where more experienced believers guide and mentor those new to the faith. * The Importance of Trust * Trust is the foundation of all human relationships, including in the military, where trust can determine the outcome of battles and wars. * Jeff emphasizes the need for men to have one or two trustworthy friends who can hold them accountable and prevent them from making mistakes that could ruin their lives. * The Unbeatable Army * Jeff launched the "Unbeatable" podcast in October 2021 with the aim of reaching people who are far from Jesus and may never set foot in a church. * Through storytelling and subtle (or sometimes direct) gospel presentations, the podcast seeks to introduce listeners to the abundant life found in Christ. * Loneliness at the Top * Jeff discusses the concept of "loneliness at the top," where leaders often struggle with making difficult decisions that impact the lives of others. * He encourages leaders to find peers in similar positions who can understand their challenges and provide support. * The Beauty of Para-Church Organizations * While the church is the primary avenue for discipleship, Jeff acknowledges the importance of para-church organizations in reaching people who may never enter a church building. * The Kingdom of God extends beyond the walls of the church, and organizations like Jeff's Unbeatable Army play a vital role in sharing the gospel. The Bottom Line This episode offers valuable insights into the principles of trust, accountability, and discipleship, as well as the importance of finding innovative ways to share the gospel with those who may be unreachable through traditional means.
