Or what is leftover at restaurants each night since they cannot reuse it for the next day? Or the bakery that bakes too many loaves of bread? For many years, the food was just thrown away and left to decompose over the next 50 years in some landfill. BarbaraBronstein tackled this problem 12 years ago by founding Second Servings, a non-profit that repurposes that food. She joins us today to explain how this works. 4:50 pm The road to getting the United States Post Office to issue a stamp honoring a special person, event or holiday is an arduous and long one – minimum of 3 years - indeed fraught with many pitfalls and requirements. In the case of commemorating a religious holiday – which becomes an annual affair – the rules are even more stringent. That’s why news that the Postal Service will issue a second Diwali stamp this October – the first one was issued ten years ago on October 5, 2016 – was greeted with joy as it features a rangoli pattern crafted by Houston-area artist Sangita Bhutada and photographed by Bijay Dixit. To tell us more about this achievement, we are joined by Sangita and Bijay themselves. 5:20 pm With a little bit of persuasion from our Indian Consul General DC Manjunath, Houstonians got a last-minute treat yesterday in the hurriedly put together Mango Tasting Festival at Keemat Grocers on Hillcroft. There were three varieties of mangoes – Chausa, Kesar and Langra - which about 50 shoppers and other community leaders got a chance to taste. Dr. C. B. Singh, the Deputy General Manager of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority of India traveled to five US cities withthese boxes of Indian mangoes and he joins us from New York City to tell us of future plans.
