    Q3 2026 Summary | Injuries, Adaptation, Bali, Business & What’s Next

I’m currently on the road from Darwin to Phillip Island after spending the last couple of months between Darwin and Bali, living a fairly gypsy lifestyle and continuing to figure out what the next chapter of Live Train Perform looks like. The original plan for Bali was simple: spend a month training MMA, get plenty of quality work in, continue developing my skills and use the change of environment to build some momentum. Then, the night before I flew out, I injured my knee playing rugby. For a little while, I thought I’d completely f****d the trip. But that became one of the biggest themes of the quarter: separating the things I couldn’t control from the things I could. Instead of spending the month frustrated about what I couldn’t do, I reframed the situation and shifted my attention toward what was still available to me. Rehab became a priority. Business became a priority. And rather than abandoning training completely, I found ways to work around the injury. I was still training twice per day for much of the trip and managed to get plenty of striking technique work in without aggravating the knee too much. It wasn’t the month of MMA training I originally pictured, but it was still a productive month. While in Bali, I also sat down with Soma Fight Club founder Mike Ikilei and strength and conditioning coach Angkii to record two new podcast conversations covering combat sports, coaching, performance and what they’re building at Soma. Away from training, a lot of my attention has gone into continuing to develop Live Train Perform and creating more opportunities for people to work directly with me. That includes opening up more spaces for 1:1 online coaching for people who don’t necessarily need someone standing over them every session, but do want structure, accountability, intelligent programming and someone in their corner helping them navigate training, performance and life. Email me at info@coachedbykobes.com if you're interested. For now, the road trip continues. The plan is to spend a few months in Sydney before heading back into Southeast Asia for another few months. As usual, some of those plans will probably change. And that’s part of the point. This episode was recorded on the 6th of October, and is a bit of a catch-up on where I’ve been, what I’ve been working through, what I’ve learned from another forced change of plans, and where Live Train Perform is heading next. Live life to the fullest. Train to your potential. Perform at your best. How I Program the Final 8 Weeks of Fight Camp | Strength, Power, Speed & Conditioning

In this episode, I answer five questions sent in by a client around one of the most important—and often poorly managed—parts of fight preparation: how to structure strength and conditioning in the final eight weeks before competition. We cover how I prioritise physical qualities across fight camp, why strength, power, speed and conditioning shouldn’t be treated as completely separate qualities, and how I combine them within the same training week without taking away from technical fight training. I also break down what I look at when a fighter appears strong and explosive early but their output drops quickly, why I generally favour two complementary full-body S&C sessions over a traditional upper/lower split for fighters, and the programming principles I use to decide what stays, what progresses and what gets removed as fight night gets closer. The underlying theme is simple: Build force → Convert force → Express performance. Strength and conditioning should support the fighter—not compete with their skill work for recovery. The goal isn’t to complete every session on the program. The goal is to arrive ready to fight. Fighting for Something Bigger: The Veterans MMA Story

After osteomyelitis took me away from training earlier this year, five weeks on the Sunshine Coast gave me an opportunity to begin rebuilding my body, reconnecting with martial arts and finding my feet again. Integrated MMA became my second home during that period—but my relationship with the gym and Veterans MMA began years earlier. I’ve trained with these men, benefited from the community they’ve built and fought under the Veterans MMA banner when I made my amateur boxing debut at their second charity fight night. Ted Hanlon and Jordan Southern were in my corner that night, while Rob Giuffrida has continued to open his gym, share his knowledge and create a place where veterans can train, connect and be themselves. In this episode, I sit down with all three men to explore the different experiences that have shaped Veterans MMA—and why the program matters. Former Royal Netherlands Marine, Australian infantry soldier and Middle East security contractor Ted Hanlon shares an extraordinary journey through service, combat, loss and the transition back into civilian life. After years spent operating in high-risk environments, accumulated injuries, isolation and excessive drinking gradually pulled him away from the man he wanted to be. Veterans MMA became the catalyst for change—helping Ted give up alcohol, rebuild his physical and mental health, reconnect with the civilian community and become a more present husband and father. Professional flyweight and Veterans MMA coach Jordan Southern explains how a decade of competitive gymnastics developed the strength, body awareness and composure under pressure that would later shape his career as a martial artist. After walking into Integrated MMA at 19, Jordan progressed from complete beginner to professional fighter and coach. He discusses the importance of training with intent and how Veterans MMA changed his reason for stepping into the cage. What began as an individual pursuit now represents a community that supports him and something bigger than himself. Integrated MMA owner and head coach Rob Giuffrida reflects on a lifetime spent learning, competing and coaching in martial arts. After training under some of the world’s most respected coaches, Rob walked away from the corporate world to open his own gym. He helped develop Integrated MMA into one of Australia’s strongest competitive teams, producing nationally ranked athletes and UFC-level fighters through a demanding culture of consistency, accountability and iron sharpening iron. Rob also explains why using martial arts in service of others has become one of the most meaningful chapters of his coaching career. These conversations also gave me an opportunity to reflect on my own transition—from soldier to coach, from rugby player to late-entry martial artist, and now from serious illness back towards training and competition. Different backgrounds brought all four of us to the same place: a gym where shared struggle creates connection, training restores purpose and everyone has a responsibility to make the people around them better. This episode is about much more than fighting. It is about rebuilding after life knocks you down, finding your tribe and becoming someone others can rely on. Is HRV the Canary in the Coalmine? | What Your Wearable Data Is Telling You

In this episode, I break down why Heart Rate Variability may be one of the most useful early warning signs available to anyone wearing a modern fitness tracker or smart watch. I share my own recent experience of dealing with a spinal infection, and how my HRV, sleep, stress, and recovery data showed that something was wrong well before the healthcare system fully caught up. This is not a conversation about obsessing over numbers. It is about learning to recognise patterns, respect changes in your baseline, and use wearable data as a tool to guide better decisions. For years, I have used HRV in high-performance sport to help manage training load, recovery, readiness, and performance. But this episode goes beyond sport. It is about what these metrics can tell everyday people, gym goers, amateur and professional athletes, and anyone trying to stay healthy, functional, and resilient. In this episode, I cover:  what HRV actually is  why trends matter more than single readings  how sleep, stress, pain, illness, and training load affect HRV  why wearable data should be used alongside symptoms, not instead of them  how reserve capacity can buy you time, but should never be mistaken for health  how to use your numbers to ask better questions and act earlier This episode is for anyone who wants to better understand what their wearable data is really saying, and why paying attention to the right signals could matter more than you think. Day 30 _ Mission 1 Complete!

Completion matters. Day 30 isn’t about another workout or another lesson — it’s about recognition, reflection, and reinforcement. Over the last 30 days, you’ve followed a structured rhythm. You’ve moved with intent. You’ve built stability, coordination, and speed. You’ve developed habits, accountability, and momentum. Most importantly, you’ve shown up consistently. This final day is about taking stock of what’s changed. You’ll reflect on: Improvements in movement quality and body awarenessThe habits and routines that now feel automaticHow structure removed friction and decision fatigueWhat worked — and what needs adjusting going forwardMission 1 Complete is not an endpoint. It’s a checkpoint. The goal isn’t to stop here — it’s to carry the standards forward. The RAMP Package was never about a single month. It’s about giving you a framework you can reuse, adapt, and rely on long-term. This day reinforces a final principle: progress belongs to those who finish what they start. Completion builds confidence. Confidence fuels the next mission. Acknowledge the work. Lock in the lessons. Choose the next objective. Mission 1 complete. Standing by... Day 29 _ Race for Impact!

This isn’t about speed alone. It’s about intent, precision, and effect. Day 29 introduces Race for Impact — applying everything you’ve built over the last four weeks into purposeful, high-quality effort. This isn’t a max-out day or a test for ego. It’s about executing with clarity and control. By now, you’ve developed mobility, stability, coordination, force absorption, force transfer, and speed skills. Race for Impact challenges you to express those qualities under pressure while staying organised. This session focuses on: Moving fast with purpose, not panicApplying speed and power where it actually mattersMaintaining mechanics under competitive intentChoosing quality execution over reckless outputRace for Impact isn’t about chasing exhaustion. It’s about making every rep count. Short efforts. Clear intent. Full recovery between bouts so performance stays sharp. This day reinforces a key principle: performance is judged by effect, not effort. When movement is clean and intent is clear, results follow. Be precise. Commit fully. Finish strong. Day 29 sharpens the edge before the final reflection. Shaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life. Day 28 _ RAMP into Sprints

Speed demands preparation. Day 28 brings everything together by applying the RAMP framework directly into sprint work — one of the highest-output, highest-risk activities if preparation is rushed or incomplete. This session reinforces a critical lesson: sprinting isn’t just running fast. It’s force absorption, force transfer, timing, coordination, and intent — all expressed at speed. Without proper preparation, sprinting exposes weaknesses instantly. You’ll learn how to: Use the RAMP Protocol to prepare specifically for sprintingTransition from general movement to high-speed output safelyPrime the nervous system without unnecessary fatigueMaintain mechanics and intent as speed increasesThe focus isn’t on volume or exhaustion. It’s on quality reps, adequate rest, and staying sharp. Sprints are treated as a skill — not conditioning punishment. This day highlights why RAMP is more than a warm-up. It’s a decision-making framework that ensures the body is ready for exactly what’s coming next. When preparation matches the task, performance improves and injury risk drops. Move well first. Ramp with intent. Sprint with purpose. Day 28 is about earning speed — not forcing it. Day 27 _ Build Momentum

Momentum is earned — then protected. Day 27 focuses on building and maintaining momentum as you move into the final phase of the 30-day cycle. At this point, the work is no longer about starting. It’s about continuing. Momentum is what carries you forward when motivation dips and novelty wears off. It’s created through repeated action, reinforced by visible progress, and sustained by structure. This session helps you: Recognise the momentum you’ve already builtAvoid common mistakes that stall progress late in a programKeep standards high without forcing intensityUse rhythm and routine to maintain forward motionBuilding momentum doesn’t mean pushing harder. It means staying consistent while resisting the urge to overreach. Many people sabotage progress at this stage by chasing a big finish instead of trusting the process. This day reinforces a key performance truth: momentum compounds quietly. When you respect the rhythm, progress continues without friction. Stay in the flow. Protect the habits. Let consistency carry you. Day 27 keeps the system moving forward.
