From Watson to Spock: The History of Sleep Training & Releasing Perfection in Motherhood

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Metro Detroit Birth Stories, I sit down with Nikki Scott—grief counselor, maternal mental health specialist, Oakland University social work professor, and author of Mama, Let's Talk About All Of It and Mama, Let's Talk About the Early Years. Together, they dive deep into the often unspoken realities of motherhood, perinatal mental health, and the systemic challenges facing new parents today.  Nikki shares her professional and personal insights on navigating the shift into parenthood. We unpack high-profile cultural moments, such as the Lindsay Clancy trial, discussing how media coverage impacts maternal mental health reporting and why open, non-judgmental conversations around intrusive thoughts and postpartum distress are so vital.  Our conversation also uncovers the historical origins of behavioral sleep training—tracing the "cry-it-out" method back to early 20th-century theories by John B. Watson and Dr. Spock—and contrasts rigid, historical norms with modern approaches to secure attachment, co-sleeping, and room-sharing.  Resources & Links Mentioned in the Episode Nikki Scott’s Books (Available on Amazon):Mama, Let's Talk About All Of ItMama, Let's Talk About the Early YearsMental Health & Support Resources:National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: Call or text 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262) Postpartum Support International (PSI): postpartum.net (Free online support groups & local resources) MC3 Program (Michigan): Connecting pregnant and postpartum individuals with mental health support https://mc3michigan.org/perinatal-patient-care/Products & Highlights:Little Words Project: Wearable affirmation bracelets supporting mental health awareness Dr. Becky Kennedy (Good Inside): Attachment and child psychology IG platform Do you have a birth story you want to share? When the Middle Baby Changes Everything: Erica’s Cesarean Birth Story

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Metro Detroit Birth Stories, my friend Erica shares the story of welcoming her middle child—the only one she carried herself—into a family built through both adoption and a deeply desired, long-awaited pregnancy. With pre-existing reproductive health concerns, Erica and her care team thoughtfully planned a cesarean birth. She reflects on what it was like to prepare for a surgical birth, how it felt to finally experience pregnancy after years of navigating fertility challenges, and how her postpartum period became a turning point in receiving support for PMDD during a time of significant hormonal change. This conversation is honest, grounded, and deeply validating—especially for listeners navigating planned cesareans, complex reproductive histories, adoption, or postpartum mental health challenges. Erica’s story is a reminder that there is no single “right” way to build a family, and that meaningful support can arrive—even if it comes later than expected. When Birth Takes a Turn: Ashley's Unexpected NICU Story

Send us Fan Mail In this powerful and vulnerable episode of Metro Detroit Birth Stories, my friend and former client shares her family’s unexpected NICU journey after the birth of her baby. What began as a hopeful birth experience quickly shifted into unfamiliar territory, bringing fear, uncertainty, and moments no parent ever anticipates.  Ashley and Kevin talk honestly about the physical and emotional toll of an unplanned induction they weren't expecting, the cesarean that followed, and their little guy's NICU stay that even their medical providers didn't see coming.  Through it all, they recount the importance of prenatal education and the strength it takes to navigate a birth when nothing goes as planned. This conversation is raw, real, and deeply human. You will hear about moments of stress and overwhelm, but also how love, communication, and self-advocacy helped them through the hardest week of their lives. Ashley, Kevin, and little Oliver are all doing well, and they shared their story to help other parents feel less alone if their own journey takes an unexpected turn. ⚠️ Trigger Warning: This episode includes discussion of an unexpected NICU admission and medical stress in the postpartum period. Join us as we laughingly reflect on the choices and mistakes we made - you might even learn something you can use today! It was so much fun to record and to listen back to. I can’t wait for you to hear it—enjoy!  Do you have a birth story you want to share? I want to hear from you! Every birth matters, and yours deserves to be heard 🩷 Questions or Comments? Birthing Without Fear, Living in Trust - Lauren's Story

Send us Fan Mail In this beautiful episode of Metro Detroit Birth Stories, Lauren shares the story of welcoming her daughter, her first child, and the final piece of her and her husband’s blended family. Unsure of how to begin planning for birth, Lauren found guidance and inspiration through a surprising connection with a previous guest, Elise, whose prenatal yoga classes opened the door to a whole new world of possibilities.  Through Elise and her fellow prenatal yoga class attendees, Lauren learned about Hypnobirthing, midwives, prenatal massage, and—most importantly—how to advocate for the care that aligned with her vision.   With curiosity and trust as her guide, and a circle of support around her, Lauren stepped into birth with confidence and clarity.  This is a story about community, self-trust, and the quiet strength that comes from being seen, supported, and informed. From Dismissed to Divine: Reclaiming My Power Through Birth - Elise's Story

Send us Fan Mail  ⚠️ Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussion of obstetric trauma, postpartum hemorrhage, and infant illness. Please take care while listening and pause if needed. While the episode ends on a very positive and hopeful note—with both Elise and her children doing well—it may still bring up sensitive emotions for some listeners.  In this deeply personal and empowering episode,my colleague Elise shares the transformative stories of her two births—one filled with unexpected trauma, and the other a healing, redemptive experience. Her first birth in 2009, which took place on Thanksgiving, included challenges with an unsupportive OB, a postpartum hemorrhage, and her son’s unrelated illness four months later. The emotional weight of that experience led Elise to believe she wouldn’t have another child. But through years of inner work and support, she made the powerful decision to try again—this time with a new care team, a new environment, and a renewed sense of self. Her second birth, in 2012 on Super Bowl Sunday, was a calm, connected experience supported by midwives. Elise’s story is one of resilience, reflection, and reclaiming agency. It is a reminder that healing is possible and that every birthing person deserves to feel heard and supported.
