261: The Untapped Power of African Equities with Finn Walker

Finn Walker was still in high school in Roanoke, Virginia, when he tried to buy a Nigerian bank. He was investing real money through a student investment program, found the platform wouldn't let him do it, and walked away more curious about African markets than before. That's an unusual itch for a teenager to scratch, but it followed him through the University of Virginia, through a summer in Accra interning at Golden Palm Investments, and into 2023, when — while still an undergraduate — he founded his own fund. He called it Heron Partners. He ran it for about two and a half years on family money alone before he let in outside investors, which is an unusual kind of patience for someone in his twenties. After graduating, he moved to London — not for the city itself, but because it's where Anglophone Africa meets. Kenyans, Nigerians and Zimbabweans who may never cross paths at home pass through London all the time. Heron's whole thesis rests on one idea: that the West misperceives Africa, and that misperception leaves good businesses mispriced. Finn isn't selling “Africa is the next big thing.” He's hunting for specific, profitable companies the market has marked down for reasons that don't hold up on inspection — something as unglamorous and as disciplined as old-fashioned value investing, aimed at a continent most of Wall Street still won't look at. 260: Can Food Become an Asset Class in Africa? with Richard Lackey

Richard Lackey has been a paramedic, a disaster relief manager and a hedge fund manager. That's an unusual resume, but it's exactly the combination it takes to do what he's doing now: treating food itself as an investable asset. In 2015, he founded the World Food Bank out of Colorado, built on a simple but radical idea — that you can run an institution like a bank, except the commodity on the balance sheet is grain, not currency. The World Food Bank trains smallholder farmers, finances their inputs, guarantees their offtake and connects them to markets that used to be closed to them. In Kenya, Richard's team went further and bought a media company, turning farm shows into a classroom reaching millions of viewers. By his own count, the work has already moved roughly 1.6 million people out of poverty. The goal is 100 million. Richard will tell you this started as a calling, not a business plan — a conviction, formed while working alongside the U.N. World Food Programme in Africa and the Middle East, that God was asking something specific of him. He's also one of the kind readers of Investing with Africa, and generous enough to be supportive of the project, which makes this conversation personal as well as professional.
