But what happens when access to government support is shaped by racial discrimination? In this episode, Stanford Lee examines the experiences of Black farmers, allegations of unequal treatment in USDA lending programs, and the consequences of delayed or denied assistance. We explore the Pigford settlement, the challenges of heirsโ€™ property, and federal efforts to address past discrimination. This conversation also recognizes the persistence, expertise, and contributions of Black farming familiesโ€”and asks what fair access and meaningful accountability should look like. Farms and people are different counts: The 2022 census reported 46,738 Black producers on 32,653 farms. Black-operated farm numbers fell about 8% from 2017, while acreage operated increased 14%.
