    026 | Reinventing High‑Energy Lasers: From Advanced Manufacturing to Fusion

    What will it take to make high-energy lasers more efficient, scalable and commercially viable? In this episode of the German Innovators Podcast, host Johannes P. Lehmann speaks with Nikolaus “Klaus” Metzger, founder and CEO of Canberra-based high-E Photonics, about the next generation of high-energy and ultrafast laser systems—and the opportunities they could unlock across science, advanced manufacturing, space, defence and fusion research. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in laser development, Klaus explains why efficiency, thermal management, beam quality and pump-diode costs become critical at higher energy levels. He introduces high-E Photonics’ approach to combining long-lifetime energy-storage media with waveguide and disk-amplifier concepts, creating a potential pathway towards lower electrical demand, fewer pump diodes and more practical Joule-class laser systems. The conversation explores the company’s journey from bespoke laser systems and lower-energy experiments towards repeatable, industrialised products. Klaus discusses why modern simulation and engineering can unlock ideas originating in the early decades of laser science—and why the breakthrough is not necessarily one entirely new piece of physics, but a better way of configuring, manufacturing and scaling the overall system.
