The PSC in Conversation: Scan4Safety with Georgina Lawton

In this episode of The PSC in Conversation, Phil Buckley, Partner at The PSC, is joined by Georgina Lawton, Head of Healthcare at GS1 UK, to discuss the latest evidence on Scan4Safety and what it means for the NHS . Launched in 2016, Scan4Safety uses barcode scanning and GS1 standards to identify and track patients, products and locations across healthcare. 10 years on, The PSC has undertaken new research for GS1 UK, exploring the evidence for how the programme is supporting patient safety, staff productivity, operational efficiency and financial benefits Phil and Georgina discuss some of the findings from the report – from more than 2,000 incorrect patient identity band scans flagged before medicines administration over two years at one trust to 168 hours of nursing time returned to clinical care each week in another – and what the evidence tells us about the benefits of wider adoption. They also explore the opportunities still to be realised, including the use of scanning technology in community care, medicines management and patient-facing digital tools, alongside the practical challenges of expanding Scan4Safety across the health service. If you're interested in finding out more about Scan4Safety and how you could implement the programme in your organisation, The PSC and GS1 UK are hosting a webinar on Wednesday 25th November 12-1pm, chaired by Lord Victor Adebowale.
