    Episode 310 - Getting REAL About Being Seen with Josh Madson

    In this episode of Circle Up and Get REAL, Jodee sits down with photographer, filmmaker, and creative visionary Josh Madson to explore an extraordinary journey of reinvention, purpose, and human connection. Josh shares how a broken-up band and a leap of faith led him from Minnesota to Los Angeles, where he built a successful career working alongside some of the biggest names in photography, including Annie Leibovitz and major commercial brands. Along the way, he learned that great photography is less about technical perfection and more about helping people feel comfortable, valued, and authentically themselves. But success didn't follow a straight line. During the pandemic, Josh found himself back in Minnesota, living with his mother, questioning his future, and searching for meaning after losing both income and direction. Out of that difficult season emerged an unexpected idea: a community portrait project that would eventually grow into Community Collage, a large-scale public art movement celebrating the people who make communities unique. Today, Community Collage has engaged thousands of people across multiple cities, including more than 1,200 participants in the Fargo-Moorhead area alone. Through free portrait sessions and massive public murals, Josh creates experiences that help people feel seen, appreciated, and connected to something larger than themselves. Together, Jodee and Josh explore themes of manifestation, personal responsibility, authenticity, belonging, and the power of creative work to bring people together. The conversation is a reminder that sometimes our greatest contributions emerge not from our highest moments of success, but from the seasons that force us to rediscover who we are and what truly matters.     Stephen Colbert is finishing his run as a late night talk show host this week (tomorrow, to be exact). Before he took on this role, back in 2005 he was host of a political satire program called The Colbert Report, where he coined the term "truthiness." Truthiness is the belief or assertion that a particular statement is true based on the perceptions of some individuals, without regard to evidence, logic, intellectural examination, or fact.  While it was satire in 2005, I wonder how it plays out in our current times. I also talked today about learning. If learning = change, then if I haven't changed, I haven't learned. What might it be that prevents people from admitting they might not have had all the information when they formed an opinion? Something keeps us from changing our minds, which, then, points to our inability or unwillingness to change and grow.     In today's episode I reconnect with longtime friend Meghan Fife, founder of B-Side Consulting and the Instagram persona "Mystic Meghan." Meghan and I met while we were both in the real estate industry (Meghan still has a specialty working with seniors in Dallas). We didn't talk much about real estate today. Instead we explored future-oriented initiatives, yoga, Meghan's values of joy, gratitude, peace, and love, and how that mindset and worldview fits with my recent study of the fourth turning, where we find ourselves today. Meghan shared her personal growth journey and how she has developed a more authentic worldview focused on respect, kindness, and finding common ground with others. She emphasized the importance of being present in the moment with whoever she is with, whether it's family, friends, or colleagues. We talked about several books, including Dr. David Hawkins' works "Power vs. Force" and "Letting Go," which we both have studied. Here is that quote:  "When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds. Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be."
