Discuss ways in which low power distance as a social value among followers could affect their interaction with a leader who displays high power distance.

    This episode will answer the following questions: Can you think of specific motivational techniques that would motivate you in each of the four categories in Chapter 8’s Exhibit 8.3 (positive extrinsic, positive intrinsic, negative extrinsic, negative intrinsic)? Describe them. Why do you think storytelling is such a powerful means of communicating for a leader? How is active listening related to storytelling?

    Chapters 6 & 7

    This episode answers the following questions: One finding is that when leaders are under stress so that fear and risk increase, they tend to revert to an authoritarian, command-and-control style. As a leader, how might you find the courage to resist this tendency? The chapter describes five ways in which followers need to use courage. Which do you feel is most important? Least important? How might a follower derive the courage to behave in new ways to be more effective? Discuss.

How might a leader deal with a subordinate who is perpetually rude, insensitive, and disrespectful to others? Which of the four elements of emotional intelligence do you consider most essential to an effective leader? Why?

    Chapters 1-3

    This Episode will answer the following questions: Look through recent magazines and newspapers (can be digital formats or paper) and identify one leader who seems to illustrate the “leader-as-hero” mindset and one who seems more typical of the humble leader described in the text. Describe their differing characteristics. Which was easier to find? Be sure to cite your sources used. Pick three traits from the list titled Some Leaders Characteristics in Exhibit 2.1 in Chapter two of the textbook/e-book that you think would be most valuable for a leader in an operational role. Pick three that you think would be most valuable for a leader in a collaborative role. Explain your choices. Think back to teachers and/or supervisors you have had, and identify one each who fits a supportive style, directive style, participative style, and achievement-oriented style according to the path–goal theory. Which style did you find most effective? Why?
