I Tried To Pay My Library Fine

I Tried to Pay My Library FineI recently returned two overdue library books expecting to pay a fine. Instead, I learned that my local library no longer charges overdue fines. That announcement surprised me. I’ve been going to the library since I was a child, when my grandfather would take me to pick out books. Back then, returning a book on time—and paying a small fine when you didn’t—was simply part of the arrangement. In this episode, I reflect on how much libraries have changed and wrestle with what happens when the financial consequence for an overdue book disappears. Does eliminating fines make libraries more welcoming and accessible, or does it make due dates feel optional? In This EpisodeMy childhood trips to the library with my grandfatherThe old machine used to record checked-out booksReturning two books that were more than a month overdueMy surprise when I learned that there was no fineWhy borrowing a shared resource comes with responsibilityHow overdue books can affect the next readerWhy fines may discourage some people and families from returningWhether eliminating fines improves access without reducing accountabilityWhy public libraries remain extraordinary community resourcesQuestions to ConsiderHas your local library eliminated overdue fines?Does removing fines encourage more people to use the library?Without a penalty, what motivates readers to return books on time?Is the due date still meaningful if there is no financial consequence?Do the benefits of improved access outweigh concerns about responsibility?Join the ConversationHave you noticed fines disappearing at your local library? #252 Brutal Consistency: Fitness, Faith and Showing Up

Send us Fan Mail Guests:  Liz Draven Hope @lizzzliftsss Sebastian Pierce  @seabasslift_ Mentions: Warren Biesiadecki  @warrenbies50 Alex Eubank  @alex_eubank15 In this episode of The Scott Townsend Show, I sit down with Liz Draven Hope and Sebastian Pierce for an honest conversation about fitness, discipline, and what it really means to put yourself out there publicly. We talk about how working out becomes more than just physical transformation—it turns into confidence, accountability, mental health, and even leadership. We dive into why they decided to start documenting their fitness journeys on Instagram and TikTok, the vulnerability that comes with posting online, and how social media can either motivate you or make you second-guess yourself. We talk about gym routines, dirty bulks, meal struggles, rest days, hot yoga, balancing school and work, and how hard it can be to simply stay consistent. We also get into the deeper reasons behind getting healthier—breaking family cycles, managing stress and anxiety, improving mental health, and learning how to keep promises to yourself. Faith plays a big role in the conversation too, as we discuss discipline, reading the Bible, being intentional with your time, and what I like to call “brutal consistency.” This episode is really about becoming the kind of person who shows up—even when it’s hard. Because success isn’t always about getting in perfect shape. Sometimes it’s just about doing what you said you were going to do. Support the show I ♥ my podcast host @Buzzsprout. #251 One Less Day, One More Chance

Send us Fan Mail A single Instagram line flips our mindset from “one more day” to “one less day,” and that change sharpens how we live right now. We trade delay for urgency, not to feel heavy, but to choose what matters and act on it today.  • reframing time as finite instead of unlimited  • seeing “one less day” as a wake-up call  • grounding urgency in faith and the idea that God numbers our days  • replacing drifting with choosing based on what matters  • questioning delay and confronting the “later” habit  • treating time as the most valuable asset  • acting today through simple steps like making the call and fixing what needs fixing  For more episodes, visit the Scott Townsend Show YouTube channel, listen on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to your favorite shows.
