Ep. 198 Sister Sue: Community leader, helper, and member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh

Yinz Are Good shares the *good* news going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We sure are glad you’ve joined us today, that you’ve carved out some time to hear about what’s going right in our communities, about the love and compassion existing within them. And today’s guest is the embodiment of these ideals. She has (literally) dedicated her life to helping others, to showing love to others, to providing hope to others…and she has been doing so for decades.  Her name is Sue Fazzini or Sister Sue. She is a Benedictine Sister - a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh. And, yinzers, she is a glowing example of what just being kind and showing compassion can do. What it can do for individuals and what it can do for communities. You’re going to hear about her journey from growing up just outside of Pittsburgh to what she is doing now, the breadth of which is remarkable and inspiring. You’re about to hear a beautiful conversation about love, respect, generosity, and giving back. Oh, and you’re gonna hear a lot of laughter too. Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Our featured guest today, Julie Ann Sullivan, has dedicated her life to doing good in the world by giving back, bringing joy to others, and creating connection. She has done this in myriad ways, with different organizations and groups, in different settings, and in her everyday life. She lives it. She does what she can to make life better for others. Tressa had the great joy of sitting down to chat with Julie Ann in her home: You’re going to hear about her journey, the work she’s done and continues to do, and she also has some tips for all of us on how to be “good yinzers”. You’re also going to hear how she and Tressa first met which, as Tressa says, "was a reminder that you don’t ever know where your next friend is going to come from, you don’t ever know if folks you pass on the street - maybe even every day - are actually kindred spirits." Ep. 208 Pittsburgh Steelers’ Annual Community Partners Appreciation Breakfast and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's Arts Landing

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We’ve got one very busy docket today… It’s Tressa here. I had one of the best days a couple of weeks ago - a day that, as I look back on it, perfectly represented the city of Pittsburgh: it involved community nonprofits, sports, and the arts. First, I had the honor of attending the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Annual Community Partners Appreciation Breakfast - where they invite nonprofits, civic leaders, and local partners together to recognize their collective impact. There were many familiar Yinz Are Good  faces there: like Marisa Escajeda from Girls, Inc.; Pastor Tim/Tim Smith from Center of Life; the folks from LaRosa Youth Club; Charlie Batch from - of course - the Best of the Batch Foundation… And then, I crossed the Allegheny River to meet with the President & CEO of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Kendra Whitlock Ingram, at Arts Landing - their new & gorgeous outdoor civic space.  So coming up first for yinz is my chat with Kendra, then we’ll head over to the Steelers breakfast, where you’ll hear from current Steelers Outside Linebacker Alex Highsmith, the Steelers’ Senior Director of Community Relations, Blayre Holmes Davis, and then two of their community partners: AJ Jefferson from the Homeless Children’s Education Fund and Charlotte Heyward-Wesley from The Heyward House. Highlights of this episode are featured on Matters.com — our show sponsor and where the world goes for what matters. Head to matters.com/yinzaregood to see what our guests have shared — and tell the world what matters to you. Ep. 207 Father and son, Harry & Gus Psaros, share their story and discuss Harry’s book, “From Struggle to Strength: A Father’s Journey with Autism and the Power of Hope and Positivity”

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff - the good news - going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Today we’re talking about hope, support, and unconditional love. There are so many layers to this conversation and so many layers to the journey of this incredible family: The Psaros family. Tressa had the privilege of sitting down with dad Harry and son Gus for what would become a beautiful, joyful and uplifting conversation. Harry is a bestselling author, autism advocate, and sports media personality (known as the “Pitt Guru”). When Gus was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, Harry at first denied it.  He was the definition of a tough sports dad, “There is no way my DNA would allow for this to happen.” But at a crucial moment, he pushed his ego aside to become the “warrior dad” in order to support his wife, Michele, and his family - and now fathers at conferences and events across the nation. Harry wrote his book, From Struggle to Strength: A Father’s Journey with Autism and the Power of Hope and Positivity,  so other dads can learn from his mistakes, work with their family to support their child on the spectrum and their successful development, see how Gus is thriving  - including becoming a recent college graduate!- with the support of both parents, and ultimately understand that an empowered mindset drives lasting growth and fulfillment in the journey with autism. Ep. 206 BEAM Collective’s Joel Burstein talks keeping local businesses alive and locally-owned during his and Tressa’s “Pittsburgh Day of Fun”

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff - the good news - going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. It’s Tressa here. I was literally smiling or laughing the entire time I was listening back to this interview. You may have noticed that this episode’s title includes “Pittsburgh Day of Fun”...you’re gonna hear all about why Joel and I dubbed it that - and how we met in the first place. Joel Burstein is the CEO of BEAM Collaborative, a nonprofit that believes that the best way to create prosperous communities is to empower their local small businesses. You’re going to hear all about their Main Street Legacy Program, which keeps local businesses alive and locally-owned – they do this by helping retiring owners transition with purpose and new buyers step in with confidence.  As you may imagine, our chat centers on the themes of community, connection, and support. It was an absolute joy talking - and spending the day with - Joel and learning about how he and his team are helping businesses stay local. Ep. 205 Reverend De Neice Welch of The Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network (PIIN) and a Thank-you Note from a Listener to Her Neighbor

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. Inspiring, insightful, centering, enriching, hopeful, frank, honest, strong, powerful, uplifting…laughter and connection. These are the words Tressa jotted down after her conversation with this episode’s featured guest, Reverend De Neice Welch. But first! Tressa kicks off the episode with a beautiful email from one of our listeners that shares a story of kindness and neighbors helping neighbors. Then, Tressa shares her chat with the extraordinary Reverend Welch, Executive Director of Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network, or PIIN. PIIN is a grassroots coalition of  faith congregations, organizations, and individuals committed to building power for justice in Southwestern  Pennsylvania. Their conversation covers a lot of ground, including bringing people of all backgrounds together for a common cause, leading as women, working for justice and the importance of being in the room where decisions are being made. The Reverend also shares her very unexpected journey that brought her to her Executive Director role. Ep. 204 The power of community: "Hall of Fame High" documentary and "Lebo Beat" community newspaper

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”. We are talking a whole lot about community in this episode - about the power of it, about connecting with our neighbors, about the importance of supporting those around you. And it’s all coming your way through not one, but TWO featured stories, both from the world of media…  First up, from the film world: A few weeks ago, Tressa received an email from our friends at DICK’S Sporting Goods, inviting her to the premiere of Hall of Fame High, a documentary by Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios - their in-house content & production studio (whom we featured in Episode 193). The documentary explores how Aliquippa High School has produced more Pro Football Hall of Famers than any other high school on the planet. Through the stories of alumni Darrelle Revis, Ty Law, and Mike Ditka — plus born-and-bred Aliquippa native Tony Dorsett — the film traces a legacy forged by the rise and fall of the steel industry, the challenges that followed, a culture of relentless competition, and generations of bloodlines. Blending past and present—from the peak of the steel industry to Hall of Fame induction weekends—the film reveals how a community shaped by struggle continues to produce excellence, asking a central question: How did one town create so many of the greatest players in football history? It is a remarkable story. Tressa had the joy and the honor of being part of the evening's festivities, which included a Q&A led by ESPN’s Rich Eisen and she got to chat with the film’s director, Jesse Washington, and Ty Law, from the red carpet.  And then, from the world of print media: With the abundance of digital platforms and AI, you may find it surprising (and perhaps refreshing?) to hear that there’s a new newspaper making its rounds in the Mt. Lebanon neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Now, it does exist online as well - but whatever way you choose to read it, the headline here is that its focus is on community-based journalism. The vast majority of contributors to the newspaper are residents of Mt. Lebanon - they have a deep desire to be part of telling the stories of their neighborhood. The paper is called LEBO BEAT and Tressa had the pleasure of sitting down with its Owner & Publisher, Brion Palmer, to talk about the importance of this type of journalism, how it builds and strengthens communities, and about his own journey that got him to where he is today.  Hall of Fame High: https://www.facebook.com/people/Hall-of-Fame-High/61587164374849/ Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios: https://www.cookiejardream.com/ Lebo Beat: https://lebobeat.com/ Watch our Tressa Tries…video series on YouTube here. https://www.yinzaregood.com/ FOLLOW US on social media: Instagram: @yinzaregood Facebook: @YinzAreGood Have a story of generosity or kindness to share with us? Ep. 203 The Twilight Wish Foundation's Missy Counahan - Honoring & enriching the lives of seniors through intergenerational wish celebrations

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors... the people who unite us by building community. We’re thrilled to let yinz know that several countries have recently joined our list of who’s listening in, bringing our total to…89 countries and territories on 6 continents. Wow! It's an absolute joy to have you all here. And, as our numbers continue to grow, what stands out most is that this community of ours actually has nothing to do with borders or nationalities, and has everything to do with the fact that generosity, kindness, compassion, and celebrating community all feel the same, no matter where we live or what language we speak. They are, quite simply, human. And they are what unites us. And you’re gonna hear all about these “uniters” in this episode, and also about giving back and saying thank you. All courtesy of The Twilight Wish Foundation. Their mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational wish celebrations. There are chapters all over the U.S., including one right here in Southwest Pennsylvania and Tressa had the delight of sitting down with Missy Counahan, the Director of the Pittsburgh area chapter. As you’ll learn, Missy is a helper to her core and has dedicated her life to helping our older friends, neighbors, and family members. This episode is filled with stories of compassion, love and kindness.  Twilight Wish (Allegheny County/Pittsburgh): https://twilightwish.org/chapter-locations/allegheny-county-pennsylvania/ Twilight Wish - main website: https://twilightwish.org/ UPMC’s Living-At-Home Program: https://www.upmc.com/services/seniors/living-at-home/contact Watch our Tressa Tries…video series on YouTube here. https://www.yinzaregood.com/ FOLLOW US on social media: Instagram: @yinzaregood Facebook: @YinzAreGood Have a story of generosity or kindness to share with us?
