Materials Data Matters (MDM) connects materials and data science with the world around us by navigating through topics in technology, sustainability and education. With support from the National Science Foundation and its Midwest Big Data Spoke for Integrative Materials Design, MDM is produced by Elena Bruess and Layne Gerbig out of Northwestern University.

Led by the University of Chicago, the Spoke project aims to connect industry, universities, and government to the people and services to find, access, and use data for materials design. It leverages the Materials Data Facility infrastructure from the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design, or CHiMaD, to foster interconnection across the Midwest. Participating universities are Northwestern University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
