Refugees and asylum seekers are people who have been forced to flee their country because of political, religious, or social discrimination. They arrive in destination countries having faced a range of profound stressors, such as armed conflict, and loss/murder of family members. Our podcast aims to provide a community and online support for refugees as a means of mental health awareness and spreading empathy.

    Siyona gives a brief overview of one of the main struggles that refugees face- religious persecution. Tolerance and inclusivity is a huge part of our mission statement, and this episode covers the discrimination that many asylum seekers have gone through. It's an honest conversation about the implications and harmfulness of religious intolerance, and it also explains how this could lead to the development of mental health issues.

    Taryn gives our take on how we can address the growing Mental Health crisis among refugees! She provides some super unique solutions including connecting resettled refugees with the community through exercise programs and other means of rehabilitation. She also touches on a screening process that could be super helpful with undiagnosed mental illnesses. All these are creative new approaches to tackle the issue, so tune in for some cool ideas!

In this episode, Annabel discusses some background as well as our goals coming into this project.  She also covers some shocking statistics- including how more than 61% of refugees will experience serious mental distress!
