Strange things go on in PippaD's head. About Ten Minutes with PippaD is PippaD thinking out loud about whatever has caught her attention. Sometimes it's ordinary life. Sometimes it's a question that gets increasingly complicated the longer she thinks about it. Sometimes she just has a story she needs to tell. There'll be random thoughts, ridiculous stories, unnecessary rabbit holes, occasional attempts at philosophy and, for a while at least, the story of what happened when PippaD got cancer.     The One Where I Nearly Didn't Have the Operation

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about automatic doors, why some people just seem to radiate colour and how many pens is too many pens. This week, however, we're back to the cancer story. I'd done everything I could to prepare for major surgery. There was just one thing left to do. Have the operation.     The One Where I Trained for Major Surgery

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about folding fitted sheets, whether fish get thirsty and people who stop immediately inside shop doorways. This week, however, we're back to the cancer story. The procedures had worked. My liver was growing. Which meant there was just one small thing left to do before somebody removed most of it. Prepare for major surgery. Apparently this involved an 800-calorie-a-day diet, lung exercises, running, HIIT, IKEA meatballs, getting up at 4:30 in the morning and treating major surgery preparation with roughly the same energy other people might bring to training for an event. I was told I needed to be as fit and healthy as possible. Yeah... we'll see about that. Here is PippaD telling you what happened to her.     The One With Shrek, Fentanyl and Three Procedures

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about supermarket conveyor belts, people who reverse into parking spaces and how planners know the optimal distance between streetlamps. This week, however, we're back to the cancer story. Tumourthy and Tumourlene need to come out, but first the bit of liver I'm keeping needs to grow. That means embolisation. A tiny procedure, I was told. It took three attempts. There are tiny veins, an overnight stay that wasn't supposed to happen, fentanyl, a nutritionist, some spectacular vomiting and a point at which Shrek becomes involved in the story far more than anybody would reasonably expect.     I've Got a Costume for That

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about the times I've put my foot right in it, why chips taste better at the seaside and bathroom light pulls, but can you see the link between them all and what I end up talking about? This week, I'm talking about costumes. From bin bag witches and homemade Nyan Cats to twelve costumes of Christmas, nine circles of Hell and the slight problem of assuming everybody else wants to dress up too. There are Eurovision parties, Hocus Pocus, an entire HIIT class wearing the same face, a Grim Reaper who never made it to hospital and a Prometheus costume that absolutely nobody appreciated enough. Apparently, whatever the occasion, I've got a costume for that.     The One Where Tumourthy Gets a Sister

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about the escalators in my local John Lewis, why toast tastes better when it's cut into triangles and the colour blue, but can you see the link between them all and what I end up talking about? Tumourthy, it turns out, was not an only child. This week, we're carrying on the cancer story after finally finding out that the thing growing in my liver was a neuroendocrine tumour. Which answered one fairly significant question, but left us with several more. Where had it come from? Was it anywhere else? And, perhaps most importantly, what were we actually going to do about it? There were more scans, more waiting and a Gallium PET scan looking for the primary tumour. They didn't find it. What they did find was another tumour in my liver. Obviously, I named her Tumourlene. So now I had Tumourthy, Tumourlene, an apparently missing primary tumour and, finally, something resembling a plan. Here is PippaD telling you what happened to her.     The One Where It Was Cancer

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about supermarket trolleys, why I always eat too much at a Harvester and whether ducks know they’re swimming, but can you see the link between them all and what I end up talking about? Well. This is the one where the title rather gives away the ending. This week, we're carrying on the story of Tumourthy. There have been scans, appointments, specialists and an awful lot of waiting, but eventually there was only one way to find out exactly what was growing in my liver. A biopsy. And this is the episode where I finally got the answer. It was cancer. More specifically, a neuroendocrine tumour. Which meant I finally knew what Tumourthy was, but there were still an awful lot of things we didn't know, including where it had actually come from and what on earth we were going to do about it.     The One Where I Got a Tumour

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about hotel pillows, squirrels and why I have so many Tupperware lids, but can you see the link between them all and what I end up talking about? This week, we're going back to New Year's Eve 2024, when some slightly dodgy blood test results led to an ultrasound, an unexpected discovery in my liver and the beginning of a story I had absolutely no idea I was starting. At this point, nobody had said cancer. I didn't have a diagnosis. I didn't even technically have a tumour yet. I had a lesion, a doctor who didn't seem particularly worried, and quite a lot of previous experience with gallstones. Here is PippaD telling you what happened to her.     The One Where I’m Back

    Strange things go on in my head. I may be thinking about WhatsApp messages, ballgowns and cheese, but can you see the link between them all and what I end up talking about? It's been a while. Quite a while, actually. Since the last episode I've changed jobs, lost my mum, had a breakdown, got cancer, had most of my liver removed and, for reasons I still don't entirely understand, become a runner. So I thought it was probably time we had a catch-up. I'm talking about where I've been, why restarting the podcast somehow became A Thing, what happens next, and why there are apparently certain responsibilities that come with being a radio presenter.
