    93. Cloud 9: That Girl Can Ride (with Special Guest Amanda)

Ah the sun is shining the temperature is going up and after our last movie it feels like the perfect time to get into the summer mood, don’t you agree listeners? Well too bad because it’s actually time to bundle up and hit the slopes as we start 2014 on the DCOM journey with the Dove Cameron and Luke Benward led winter sports film, Cloud 9. Though we couldn’t arrive at the lodge alone so we brought along new special guest, the host of Retrospective-A-Rooney, Amanda to dig deeper into this film and Dove Cameron’s career as a whole. Jake realizes how this movie connects to the Hallmark cinematic universe, Kate schools us in winter sports, Amanda schools us in Liv and Maddie, and all three of us decide to form the Sebastian Swift Haters Club. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Jake does not remember the past correctly, How just a few years difference can make people nostalgic for different things, Paul Hoen and IHop, The dogs (and cats) of it all, The search for Kayla and Skye fanfiction, and the way our minds were blown by the kiss in this movie. Again huge shout out to Amanda for joining us and make sure you guys check out her show Retrospective-A-Rooney for all the Liv and Maddie goodness you could want! 92. Teen Beach Movie: Their Job is Beach

Oh hey listeners! You’re just in time to join us in watching our favorite movie! You know the one about a boy and a girl from opposing groups who fall in love despite their groups feelings about each other, who ultimately unite said groups to take down a greater evil. Oh no not that one, or that other one. Okay let me just say it, we’re officially making our one and only stop in 2013 on the DCOM train as we hit the beach and learn true gender equality as we discuss the meta musical Teen Beach Movie. Jake reveals his R5 lore, Kate contemplates how she and her significant other would react to being in this situation, and both of them ponder if the titular teen beach is actually located in Barbieland. They also go over some quick Disney Channel news nuggets and reveal their official rankings for DCOMs 81-90. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Kates end of the academic year craziness, A crash course in Heated Rivalry, An examination of 6 7, Kate’s first encounter with the Newsies, A shout out to the cup song, The One Direction lore tied to this movie, and our apologies to West Side Story (2021). (Sorry for Kates audio folks, she didn’t have her microphone on her for this recording, but we persevered) Follow the host’s Twitter: @jakeblue98 & @katescommentary Instagram: jakeblueart & kvrandom Follow the podcast’s twitter: @TSOSNPodcast Follow the podcast Instagram: Somethingnewpod Email us: startofsomethingnewpodcast@gmail.com If you’re listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify feel free to leave a rating and review

    91. Girl vs. Monster: Skylar the Vampire Slayer

When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts… err I mean monsters are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight! Welcome foolish mortal listeners to… well okay it’s technically a haunted mansion but not that haunted mansion. To summarize that long winded, and partially stolen, intro is that after a little over a month away we’re officially saying goodbye to 2012 on the DCOM train with a very spooky stop as we discuss Girl vs. Monster. Jake present a theory for Disney really pushing Olivia Holt at this time, Kate has words about the editing of phone screens in the movie, and both of them discuss how this movie totally didn’t steal from Ghostbusters but might have helped inspire Inside Out 2. They also go over all the news they missed while they were away including the Hannah Montana 20th anniversary special, the newly announced Disney Legends, and the continued longevity of the Descendants and Zombies franchises. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Dealing with illnesses, Reflections on Kate’s wedding almost a year later, Olivia Holts current career in horror, A 101 lesson on Shadowhunters, The YA novel adaptation boom in 2010s cinema, Avocado toast, and A Stephen King fact check Also stayed tuned for next episode where we will reveal our DCOM rankings of movies 81-90, this episode would’ve been very bloated had we added that. 90. Let It Shine: Preaching The Truth To The Choir

Alright everyone take your seats, take your seats now. Congregation, I come to you today with a message. A message so powerful you would believe that it came to me straight from a higher power. The message in question, is a thank you for joining us as we continue season 6 by discussing the good word of the 2012 musical DCOM, Let It Shine. Jake keeps wanting to call the main character Chris due to the actors previous work, Kate learns about some classic literature despite being getting a PHD in English, and both of them discuss how this movie portrays the church and why it isn’t as recognized as other DCOM musicals. They also give their input on a third Phineas and Ferb movie being in development, as well as the new Disney CEO. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Our determination to reach DCOM 100, Kates last minute delay to the recording session, Surviving the winter, Manifesting a Paul Hoen collab, Quinta Brunson’s Buzzfeed to Abbott Elementary pipeline, The extensive history of Radio Disneys Next Big Thing, and The continued lie of under 21 clubs. A disclaimer: We say it in the episode but we apologize for not being able to analyze this films portrayal of black culture as neither of us belong to that the group but we highly encourage any listeners who want to send us an analysis like that to our email if they want to. Welcome back dear listeners to the season 6 premiere of The Start of Something New! We’re back on the mics and ready to kick off the season by talking all about Radio Rebel, the 2012 DCOM starring the girl who wanted to make history herself Debby Ryan. Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas everyone! We here at The Start of Something New podcast would like to wish you all a happy holiday, as well as make sure you’re not having any problems or issues with your siblings. We wouldn’t want to have Santa curse you to prevent you from getting home to your children in time for Christmas now would we? If that sounded like a very ridiculous plot well then buckle up because that’s the exact situation our favorite famous band of brothers finds themselves in the movie we’re discussing today. That’s right we’re ringing in Christmas and ending season 5 with another holiday special as we talk all about the 2025 Disney+ release, A Very Jonas Christmas Movie. Jake explains the recent penny-less allegations the brothers have faced, Kate ponders where Mrs. Claus is in this movie, and both of them actually start drafting out an idea for Home Alone: The Musical. So here’s to the end of season 5 and the exciting things to come in season 6. 88. Frenemies: A Story in 3 Acts That Only Needed 1

Ah welcome back everyone to your favorite podcast hosted by two best, two good friends, who would never think of each other as enemies. Not even if outside factors came into play like say, a new romantic partner, a job opportunity, or a stranger who looks completely identical to us. Nope we would never turn on each other like that, unlike the people in this movie. Yeah that wasn’t one of my best intros but this movie didn’t give me that much to work with. So join us as we start 2012 off on the DCOM train as we discuss the 3 vignette film Frenemies. Jake does some research about the book this movie is adapted from, Kate discovers a new dream thanks to the lack of parents in one segment of this movie, and both of them come to a conclusion about why they stopped watching the Disney Channel during this time. They also report on the Camp Rock 3 teaser and question what’s going on with Descendants 5. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Our thanksgivings not going how we planned, A quick lesson about the S-Curve, Zendaya’s post Disney success, The dating scene that was the set of Cobra Kai, Our first ANT Farm mention on the show, The possible death of the Our History With segment, Changing Siri’s voice, The concept of mass texting and how it even works, and a Congratulations to Robert Irwin for winning Dancing with the Stars.
